Everyone remembers Wil Weaton ... Don't they!?

I've just read this marvelous frontpeace to Wil's new site. Sorta puts things into perspective for me.

I think Wil would make a very good personal friend.

Oh yeah, Wil has done quite a good job (at least among the geekly community) of shedding the image of Wesley Crusher, Boy Ensign. (I always wonder why they kept him around on the show... the character seemed to be almost universally loathed. It would have been very easy to have him killed in an antimatter inversion while he was trying to recalibrate the Jeffries tubes, or ship him off to a boarding school somewhere.)

The character of Wesley Crusher is a perfect example of how kid discrimination works. He's a freakin' genius, and yet none of the crew ever respect him. They treat him like shit, and that always pissed me off -- mostly because that's exactly how I felt when I was a kid. Not that I was a genius, just that no one gave a shit about anything I ever had to say. It was always made abundantly clear, on both the Enterprise and in my world.

Also, people alway say they hate Wesley because he always "saved the day". So, a kid can't save the day, can he?? He's a genius. That's why he saves the day. And the only reason it pisses people off is because they can't stand the fact that a kid could ever be smarter than an adult.

That's why he was always one of my favorite characters. Because fuck everyone, and their assholish ways.

Odd_Bloke 06-02-2003 10:15 AM

No, they hate him because he is a little piece of something unpleasant!!! He is too goody-two-shoes. He is one-dimesional crap! He gives bleeding kid geniuses (genei?) a bad name!!!

juju 06-02-2003 12:59 PM

Yeah, but I'm saying that the source for all that anger is simple prejudice.

Perhaps, Seņor Omniscient, and perhaps not. You seem prejudiced against those who didn't appreciate the Crusher character. You're somehow different or better?

Undertoad 06-02-2003 01:20 PM

I never understood the animosity towards the Wesley character. There was equally bad writing and characterization for almost all the characters.

The only one that was well thought-out from the start was Data, and even then they hadda give him the stupidest name possible.

Sort of. I'm prejudiced against people who judge others soley based on their age. And sure, I freely admit that it's only my opinion.

Odd_Bloke 06-02-2003 01:42 PM

OK, for the record, I'm 15. And see my opinions above.

juju 06-02-2003 02:00 PM

So, what is it about him you don't like, then? Why is he a piece of shit? Just bad acting, or a one-dimensional character, or what?

Odd_Bloke 06-02-2003 02:16 PM

I think it's the fact he is a one-dimensional character (more so than other TNG characters). Had he had more time on screen (and been less annoying (and no, I don't know why he is so)) I might of liked him. As it is, he wasn't much worse than the rest of the cast (though I did like Data and La Forge).

Griff 06-02-2003 02:46 PM

We hated him because of his clothes.

juju 06-02-2003 03:02 PM

lol... grey spandex??

Chris MC 06-02-2003 03:18 PM

I always found him, and still do, quite cute. Not the least bit annoying. Not as cute as Troi and mother Crusher tho :D still remember seeing their exercise sessions.

Chris.

Hmmm! "mother Crusher"

hot_pastrami 06-02-2003 03:38 PM

Occasionally Wesley was pretty whiny. Old or young, whiny people are obnoxious. More to the point though, the character was uninteresting. The writers made the character that most of the audience would have identified best with (young conmputer geek) a flat, flavorless, whiny kid in spandex.

Not to knock Wil's acting, he was doing his best with the crap he was handed.
