Best Western

NOthttp://www.lamplighterinn.ca/images/lamplightersign.gif:headshake

But cowboys and such. Ive just seen The Great Silence, which Alex Cox waxed lyrical as the best spaghetti western ever, certainly a great movie, stunning scenery of deep snow ( set in Utah during the great blizzard of 1899 or something) but I don't know about better than Once Upon a Time in the West. We had a great thread on war movies back a couple of months ago so how about westerns, Clint Eastwoods been in a lot from his early career in 'Dollars movies to the later ones he directed (Pale Rider, Unforgiven, the Outlaw Josey Wales) pretty much all of which are contenders.
Modern westerns, or old school Duke and the 7th Cavalry?

Also
For the boys or do chicks dig them too?

I liked Shane a lot. And I stayed over night in Kanab, UT years ago...

Pale Rider, Jeremiah Johnson and Unforgiven are at the top of my list. Been wanting to see 3:10 to Yuma for awhile now, heard good things. Oh and Blazing Saddles of course.

I think I'll have to get Shane, I don't know if I've ever seen it.

There were a couple of Wyatt Earp movies out a couple of years ago (14  ) Wyatt Earp and Tombstone. Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday was awesome in Tombstone.

I don't know about best Western, but my favorites are Rio Bravo and Silverado. I love Walter Brennan as Stumpy. And his griping at Dude (Dean Martin) is a hoot.

Silverado has good action and enough humor to be more than a morality play.

Does There Will Be Blood count?

Shawnee123 01-21-2009 10:10 AM

I can't speak for chicks, but this chick likes a few westerns.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly...well it's in my top 20 movies.

Mom loved Shane...and that is why my older brother's middle name is Alan. I have never seen it, believe it or not.

Treasure of the Sierra Madre

The Wild Bunch

Wait, shouldn't this be Beest Western?

Not in order of preference, the ones that immediately come to mind are:

Pale Rider
A Fistful of Dollars
High Plains Drifter
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Cat Ballou (just sayin', my confirmation name is not Catherine because of Catherine of Sienna or anybody else who was having stigmata sometime in the Middle Ages ...)
Little Big Man
Dances with Wolves

I hesitate to add Outland, but I think it really was a Western, even if it was set in a space station.

Shawnee123 01-21-2009 12:07 PM

Ohhhh...Little Big Man. Classic.

"I'll be your wife, Little Big Man."

love your conf name!

I thought of Outland before posting the thread, trying to think of 'alternative westerns', totally a western plot, just spaced up, maybe Connery couldn't do the accent :D .

Man, I've seen sooooo many. My list is totally subject to my mood, but off the top of my head I'd say my top 10 are....

Blazing Saddles
The Magnificent Seven
Tombstone
The Searchers
High Noon
The Wild Bunch
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
Shane
Rio Bravo
The Shootist

Elspode 01-21-2009 06:06 PM

Unforgiven
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
El Dorado
The War Wagon
The Sons of Katie Elder
Silverado
Jeremiah Johnson
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
True Grit/Rooster Cogburn
Stagecoach
Big Jake
The Shootist
Winchester 73

There's just too many great ones. And you can probably tell I'm a big fan of The Duke. Not of his politics, but of the actor.
