Ive just seen The Great Silence, which Alex Cox waxed lyrical as the best spaghetti western ever, certainly a great movie, stunning scenery of deep snow ( set in Utah during the great blizzard of 1899 or something) but I don't know about better than Once Upon a Time in the West. We had a great thread on war movies back a couple of months ago so how about westerns, Clint Eastwoods been in a lot from his early career in 'Dollars movies to the later ones he directed (Pale Rider, Unforgiven, the Outlaw Josey Wales) pretty much all of which are contenders.

I liked Shane a lot. And I stayed over night in Kanab, UT years ago...

Pale Rider, Jeremiah Johnson and Unforgiven are at the top of my list. Been wanting to see 3:10 to Yuma for awhile now, heard good things. Oh and Blazing Saddles of course.

There were a couple of Wyatt Earp movies out a couple of years ago (14 :eek: ) Wyatt Earp and Tombstone. Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday was awesome in Tombstone.

I don't know about best Western, but my favorites are Rio Bravo and Silverado. I love Walter Brennan as Stumpy. And his griping at Dude (Dean Martin) is a hoot.

Silverado has good action and enough humor to be more than a morality play.

Mom loved Shane...and that is why my older brother's middle name is Alan. I have never seen it, believe it or not.

I thought of Outland before posting the thread, trying to think of 'alternative westerns', totally a western plot, just spaced up, maybe Connery couldn't do the accent :D .
