Dead end for Palestinians
BY FRIDA GHITIS

Whatever ones views about Israel and its campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, it is imperative to look closely at its enemy. Those who care deeply about the fate of the Palestinian people should spend some time examining Hamas. The aims of the Islamic group that has held power in Gaza for 18 months stand in direct opposition to the goals of Palestinians who want peace, freedom and a better future.

Hamas opposes the two-state solution, and it has proven a brutal enemy against any Palestinians who disagree with its views. Hamas has all but banished its Palestinian rival, Fatah, from Gaza. It does not tolerate different views. Freedom of thought, expression and religion, are on their way out in Gaza.

The Hamas charter, in Article 8, provides a framework. ''Allah is its target, the Prophet [Muhammad] is its model, the Koran is its constitution, jihad is its path, and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.'' Last month, a report in an Arab newspaper detailed a vote by the Hamas parliament to introduce Sharia, Islamic law. The report said Hamas wants to bring back amputations, hangings, lashings and even crucifixion. The death penalty would be reserved for serious crimes, such as 'negotiat[ing] with a foreign government -- against Palestinians' interest.''

Anyone under the impression that Hamas secretly wishes to negotiate peace with Israel has fallen victim to wishful thinking. Hamas openly calls for the destruction of Israel and wants to replace ''every inch'' of it with an Islamic nation, as part of fundamentalists' goal of creating one large supranational caliphate. In fact, Hamas does not like the idea of a nation-state.

This should be in the Gaza thread.
Aside from that - no kidding. Nothing new there. Sux really. Antiquated attitudes are the problem. Some people complain about Christianity, take a look at some of their stuff.

I would have put it there but considering how it deteriorated I wasn't about to dredge that crap up to the top.

Islam is where Christianity was a few centuries ago, and where Judaism was during the Old Testament (assuming there's any historical accuracy in there). Those Abrahamic religions have a nasty bit in their life cycle. Hopefully the information age can speed this bit up.

Meanwhile, I just can't see a reason for the practitioners of nastiness, who disgrace their religion, to survive. Kill them with fire and impalement.

Bah! Hamas just rejected any peace talks with Israel by Abbas. As if THEY were in charge over all of Palestine.

In other news, they proposed a year-long truce of their own, while at the same time stating publicly that they had begun rearming and upgrading their weapons as soon as Israel stopped shooting at them. They also stated their aim to defy the ban on arms smuggling to bring in even more and newer weapons with which to attack Israel.

Phooey on them all, next time Israel should wipe out every living person in Gaza. Hamas hides behind innocents and the civilians will not stop them. Kill em all, say I. Just MY opinion, of course, most normal people will argue the point. But *I'm* not normal. I'm sick of the violence. Israel should end it once and for all.

Israel has been reluctant to countenance genocide as a solution.

But how much can any one people take? Would you want them to go there?

Blame the surrounding states for secretly maintaining a war, using Palestinians for the cannon fodder. Blame, latterly, Iran's mullahs. These countries aren't taking their suffering brethren in, they are emphatically not allowing them to recoup their fortunes in a new place, which is the creative response to a popular migration. There's nothing new in some new people irrupting into a land, and if you aren't going back, get going on Plan B. Or be like the Palestinians. Wretched, and deliberately kept that way in a prison that pretends it's not a prison.
