Who has the best concert DVD?

I just picked up John Mayer & Norah Jones… good, but not great. Looking for something more than just concert footage and while these two had a few goodies on them, it wasn’t quite enough. Any suggestions?

Nine Inch Nails "And All That Could Have Been"... if you like Nine Inch Nails, you probably have this already. They did a hell of a job with it, including multiple camera angles and the works. It's actually two DVDs, so they could keep the bit rate high. Available in Dolby 5.1 and DTS. Highly recommended.

I picked up a copy of "An Evening with the Dixie Chicks" (for the little lady) recently. It's quite good, and I'm not a huge fan either. But I do like Bluegrass, and Emily Robison is a hottie!

Underworld "Everything Everything": This the THE live DVD.

A few I've bought recently:

Neil Finn: Seven Worlds Collide. Neil is the musical genius behind Crowded House and was in Split Enz with his brother, Tim. The DVD records a several nights long set of shows he and his band performed in Auckland, NZ (his home town) in 2001. The band consists of Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway of Radiohead, Johnny Marr (ex of The Smiths) and Sebastian Steinberg and appearances by Eddie Vedder, Tim Finn and Neil's son's band. It's great because the disk doesn't spend too much time off the stage; the songs are great and the versions of them on this disk are lively. The video looks great, too.

The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. This is a two-disc package that has all 4 Ed Sullivan Shows the BEatles appeared on in their entirety, so not only do you get to see the Fab Four, you get to see what passed for entertainment in the US in 1964-1966. And yet we somehow survived as a country.

Paul McCartney: Back in the US. A live DVD of Paul's tour from last year. When it stays on the stage it is a great disc, but there is an awful lot of "Paul is so great!" from random fans and lots of gratuitous celebrity-in-the-audience shots. Look! It's Howard stern and his current porn star-stripper girlfriend! Look! It's John Cusack! Look! It's Jack Nicholson! Look! It's Paul Stanley without his KISS makeup! Little kids, people of color, families - Paul's music touches us all and this disc doesn't let us forget it. His drummer is incredible, though. "Maybe I'm Amazed" is great.

U2: Elevation Tour Boston 2002. Is a 2 disc set. The concert is good, the performances are exciting and energetic. The second disc is cool; it consists of alternate camera angles. The first is a "crowd cam", shot by a fan in the middle front on the floor, the second is a surveillance camera in the video control room with the director and his team going nuts trying to keep track of everything. It also includes a "road movie" showing a time elapsed "Day in the Life" of set up, show and tear down down to "Walk On."

A couple years back I bought a Stevie Ray Vaughan 3-CD 1-DVD boxed set. The stuff on the CDs was generally good, but the DVD was amazing. It's comprised of five tracks that were edited out of Stevie Ray Vaughan Live From Austin Texas, but these five are the best of the bunch... whoever did the editing for that original DVD needs their ass kicked.

Anyway, it's not a big fancy production, it's just a great guitaraist and his band playing their music at a relatively small venue, but it's amazing anyway. In playing, Stevie Ray seems to make numerous serious attempts on the lives of the audience, particularly in his rendition of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile. It looks like every note burns coming out of him. I'd give my left nut for a chance to go back in time to see him play live before he died. Damn.

Hey Arz, I'm a huge Neil Finn, Crowded House, Split Enz fan. I am going to have to get that DVD. Thanks for the info. For myself, I loved the Peter Gabriel DVD that was just released. On the horizon, I have to get the new beatles DVD and the Led Zeppelin "Live At Last" DVD set. I've been waiting for something like this forever! Anyone know any details?

arz 04-23-2003 06:33 PM

The Beatles Anthology is now on DVD. Best Buy had it for some ridiculously cheap price - 4 DVDs for $48.

The "Hard Day's Night" DVD is a fun package. Two discs; the first is the movie and the second has a bunch of interviews with people involved in the making of the movie, including the tall skinny guy that was mirroring Ringo's dance moves during the party scene. Disc 1 I think also has a director's narration track (I can't quite remember right now).

Sting - Bring On The Night

This is one of the most unguarded tour docs I've ever seen. Tons of live footage, in depth converstations with Sting and the Band. It doesn't hurt that The players are among the best in the world.

[edit: not on DVD, only VHS for now]

That's so funny. I've had that sitting on my TiVo for the past.. oh, two months and haven't gotten around to watching yet. I guess I'll get around to it this weekend!

Hey Arz, thanks for the beatles info. isn't that a 5 disc set though. I heard a bit moe about the upcoming Zep DVD set. It comes out May 27th and is supposed to have performances at several shows and lots of unseen footage. These guys haven't released a lot of stuff like this so it should be really cool. Anyone else a fan?

elSicomoro 04-24-2003 10:04 PM

mm hit the nail on the head with Underworld. Depeche Mode's "One Night in Paris" is pretty good too.

jfalk68 04-26-2003 01:43 PM

Oh man, I just read that Loews is gonna debit that Zep DVD in theatres on the day it comes out. It's gonna be huge!

Hey Sycamore, how old is that Depeche DVD? Are they still playing?

That DVD came out last summer, and its from the 2001 "Exciter" tour.

And yes, they're still playing/recording.

Best concert dvd? That's a tough one. But I know which one is my newest:

Shine A Light. It's awesome!

DucksNuts 09-04-2008 06:16 AM

Robbie Williams - Live at The Albert
Robbie Williams - What we did last summer
P!NK 2007 tour (??)

Come on peeps, the best concert film is clearly Stop Making Sense - The Talking Heads

I keep hoping that Laurie Anderson Home of the Brave will get rereleased on DVD because I'm wearing out my VHS copy.

Best more recently produced is Rammstein Live Aus Berlin.

White Stripes - Under Blackpool Lights

Blue man group had a concert that aired on Directv, I think it is BMG The Complex Rock Tour. It was top notch. The DVD that comes with their third CD (Megastar Live) has a concert but it was nowhere near as good as the concert I mention. The third CD wasn't as good as the other two CDs either.

I have that one. It's great. I also have Cradle of Filth: Peace Through Superior Firepower.

Cheating a bit, as this is a YouTube clip and not a concert DVD. But for those who mentioned Crowded House as a great live band/ having great live DVDs, here's a Glastonbury clip.

Might not really interest non-fans, but it does give a taste of how CH interact with the crowd and make every single performance different. Having seen Prince (who my companion considered the apogee of live performance) and then taking her to see CH, I realised how spoilt I was. Consummate showmen, in a very different way than Prince. They both have their place - I just know who I prefer.

End of one song, chatting with security, then Don't Dream it's Over (with usual audience singalong) with security ad-libbing.

PS - Neil Finn could be David Tennant's Dad. In my mind.

I don't have any concert DVDs, except for the Blue Man Group one, which I bought after seeing them in LV--really terrific, and I watch it a lot.

Maybe I'll take some of the suggestions here. Cool topic!

Brian Setzer "Live In Japan" Older but still Entertaining. A great show. You can tell the Orchestra loves what they are doing. The audience loves it even more.

Eric Clapton "Crossroads" Spectacular guitar work and history of songs. "Cocaine" was written and originally sung by who?

The Eagles "Live From Australia"...Their best work, they get better with age. (Sorry, Don Felder)

Blue Man Group "The Complex, Rock Tour Live" You better go beyond "Eleven" on the Amps. Best rock violin,(fiddle if you insist) ever. The song, I Feel Love - featuring Venus Hum has a very special life of it's own.

Stray Cats "Rumble In Brixton" How can a trio make this much music? The audience knows every word and has a rockin' good time.

U2 Live at red rocks (1983) -- The best concert I have on VHS!!! (I dont have or like DVDs)
