July 8, 2009: Gocta Falls

Here's something you've not likely seen, or even heard of.

There is a final secret of Northern Peru that should be visited if possible - and this was a real secret to outsiders until very recently. That is the incredible and only recently discovered (by Westerners of course, the locals have known about it for as long as they have been there) Gocta Falls. This twin drop waterfall is said to be the third longest in the world (hotly debated), at seven hundred and seventy one meters. The ‘discovery’ was not made until 2005.

This is the biggest one we have in Oz, and it's only half as high but impressive. I have been there. Can't imagine what it'd be like to see something twice a high.

That's awesome.

I wish I could traverse along the ledge that interrupts the falls - I guess there would be a basin-shaped lake where the upper fall strikes it. What an amazing place.

No, no, no, we actually have two ways to really do it.
1. Bungee jump from the top of the falls in a kayak. When you reach the end of the cord, you simply slip out of the 'yak and let it drop the rest of the way on a parachute.
2. Base jump from the top in a kayak, using the oar to steer to the point of pulling the ripcord.

I'm getting light headed just thinking about it.

Speaking of hucking off waterfalls in kayaks (10m is the biggest I've dropped) the world record just got busted again recently...
