September 10, 2007: Waterproof suspended ceiling

It's Neatorama collaboration Monday!

Today's entry is from a site called English Russia where they often find interesting items in Russian and translate them for the rest of the world's enjoyment.

Their entry suggests that many Russian suspended ceilings are like this. And frankly it's a fine idea, because I'm sure many of us are going to weigh in with stories of how the upstairs neighbor made a mistake and left us with an unintentional flood.

I know I have a story, and it's not the neighbors but bad plumbing that allowed the upstairs shower to drip greywater out of an electrical connection, ruining part of a ceiling.

(greywater: now there's a vocabulary word for ya.)

http://cellar.org/2007/waterproofceiling3.jpg

But that can't happen here. I can't imagine that every ceiling is set up this way...

It looks like you could get rid of the excess by putting something under the leak and poking it with a pin.

Check out our friends at Neatorama for more neato items all the time!

Looks like boobs.

I can't imagine the floor/ceiling can support that much weight!

I wouldn't, if the stuff in those bowls is the result  A most extreme case of mastitis at best. Can you get cabbage leaves that size?

What the heck are their ceilings made of? The Sta-Puft Marshmallow Man?

Coign 09-10-2007 12:02 PM

It looks to me like that is a least a 100 gallons of space and if that is 100 gallons of water that would be 700 lbs at the minimum. That is a lot of weight for whatever that its to hold. And how is the light fixture attached? Wouldn't water leak through what ever hole is cut in the ceiling for the light fixture?

Cool picture but this one is a little hard for me to swallow.

Suspended ceilings like that are made of canvas fastened at the edges and painted with a lightweight paint. They used to be fairly common before the advent of sheet gyproc as they are a fairly low skill treatment. They are also much cheaper than say punched tin.

Elspode 09-11-2007 12:23 AM

And considerably more waterproof than punched tin.
