Tree Fae 07-10-2008 08:56 PM

Wouldn't know if I did, LOL, we were careful not to touch them for the most part, I have no idea how deadly they might be.

jinx 07-10-2008 09:03 PM

:thumb: Nice job TF, excellent shrooms.
Did splode take that last one or is it a self portrait?

More fungi... (some of these were posted before in Close Ups but my links broke. I think it was Bruce's fault....) (these were taken with my little sony cybershot)

I really like that last one. Great shots

My sorta ex husband took the picture of me.

Clodfobble 07-10-2008 10:00 PM

So this mushroom walks into a bar, and the bartender says, "Hey, we don't serve your kind here!"

The mushroom says, "Aw, come on, I'm a fun-guy!"

Et tu, Jinx?

classicman 07-10-2008 10:21 PM

I hate to be serious here, but...

Tree Fae -
1 looks like an Aborted Entoloma not sure though
4 "Old Man of the Woods" (very good to eat too)
6 Coral mushroom of some type - very old
7 same as 4 (very young)
8 is a Mycena (too many to tell which)
10 is a Tree Fae - very rare find indeed.

Jinx -
1 is a Bolete not sure what kind.
2 Purple Rusulla
5 Turkey Tail
6 is a Red Rusulla

Just in case anyone was wondering

classicman 07-10-2008 10:22 PM

Those are really nice pics

jinx 07-10-2008 11:20 PM

Cool, thanks cman.

Great pics, great info.
And I laughed at the zombie penis you snuck in there.
Also very cute pic of you Tree, bravo!

Is it wrong that the mushroom pictures make me hungry?

Beautiful pic of another bolete - see the underside of the cap - those that look like a sponge are members of the Bolete family.

Some boletes like the "King Bolete" are excellent to eat, others like the "Bitter Bolete" taste, well bitter. Oh, and this is a bitter beyond description. Your forehead may sink into your mouth if you try it - don't ask.

Another has a bright yellow underside that stains blue when touched - very cool, but also poisonous. That may be what you have here - can't really tell though.

glatt 07-11-2008 07:57 AM

Yesterday evening I was looking out the window and thought I saw a bright orange dish towel thrown on top of the mulch around a tree we have. I went out side for a closer look, and it was this amazing fungus. Maybe about an eighth of an inch thick covering about a square foot of area. Bright orange yellow. Looked like a thick coat of that orange coating on Doritos, sprinkled over the mulch. So thick you couldn't see through it. Creepy looking.

I scooped it up with rubber gloves into a bag to trow away, and saw that it went down into the mulch fairly deep. Got as much as I could without using a rake.

Any idea what that was, classic?

TheMercenary 07-11-2008 09:10 AM

Where is the psilocybin mushrooms???

TheMercenary 07-11-2008 09:23 AM

This is growing in my back yard. They come and go all year round.

glatt - I know exactly what you are describing, I've seen it many times. I call it "orange fungus, but I don't know the real name for it. It grows on mulch a lot and is bright orange then goes tanish as it ages and then finally dark brown when dead.

Merc - the first two pics are turkey tails and the third looks like an old "Elm Oyster"

Here's a picture of the weird orange stuff.

And I went for a hike this morning with my daughter and took a picture of this shroom.

monster 07-12-2008 09:00 PM

im not sorry about ur fungus.

classicman 07-13-2008 08:40 PM

Glatt - The first is some type of slime mold or whatever - I don't know too much about them. I've seen them around, there are a lot of them that all seem similar except for different colors but I don't pay them much mind as I would never attempt to eat one.

The second looks like another "Old man of the woods" I found my first ones in NC, and they were very tasty. The Audubon book on mushrooms is excellent if anyone is interested. It still is rather early for all these to be out - normally they start in the fall. Guess I better get my ass out and about.

lumberjim 08-02-2008 11:08 PM

why is that third one so phallic?

classicman 08-03-2008 12:44 AM

The first is a puffer, but I'm not positive which variety. Did you see the inside by chance? If it was white, its a gem studded, but I think its the one with a dark gray inside.
The second two are purple russullas.
The last one is a cup ???? I forget.

lumberjim 08-03-2008 12:54 AM

where/when did you learn your fungi, classic?

it's an obscure thing to know...but potentially usefull in an Armageddon type scenario......

classicman 08-03-2008 12:59 AM

My grandfather got us started on it as young children and I just kept up with it as I grew older.

lumberjim 08-03-2008 01:48 AM

a mushroom sits down next to a cute toadstool at a bar and says, " hi ...can I buy you a drink?"

the toadstool declines and blushes....

So the mushroom says....., "Why not?! I'm a Fun Guy!"

Clodfobble 08-03-2008 09:39 AM

Ahem.

lol - yeh xob, I'm starting to feel that way lately.
Anyway here is one I found recently - Its an "Elegant Stinkhorn"

Rather phallic and very colorful, yet smells really bad. DO NOT TOUCH.
The mud looking stuff at the top is NOT MUD!

Griff 08-12-2008 10:15 AM

Lil' Pete just reported seeing something like that when they were clearing brush...

We had this bad boy come up in the back yard this spring -- looks morel-ish but not really.

morethanpretty 10-21-2008 11:34 AM

That is a blue pilot G-2, prob an 07 (most common) but could be a 05 even, can't see the marking to be sure. How lucky to find one in your yard though! They're the best.

Undertoad 10-21-2008 11:43 AM

That is a false morel - I am not sure which one - My book is in my car. I'll see if I can get it at lunch. Ok I got it and found a pick online to post too. One indicator of a false versus true morel is to cut it in 1/2 from top to bottom the false will look like a cap and the true will have a cavity inside.
This is, believe, your guy. Gyromitra esculenta nice link.

classicman 10-21-2008 11:58 AM

1 Attachment(s)
This shows a true morel and what it looks like cut in 1/2. The false will not have that "cavity or space" This is not a foolproof test.

barefoot serpent 10-21-2008 12:13 PM

yes, the innards were chambered -- not a single cavity. and thus, it was not fried-up with the lamb chops.:)

oh, and yes it is a G-2:p

glatt 10-21-2008 12:17 PM

We had en enormous white mushroom in the shape of a ball in our yard a couple weeks ago. Larger than a softball, more like one of those really big grapefruits.

Anyway, our neighbor saw it from across the street and asked if he could have it. He took it into his yard and left it there to hopefully have babies. He's really into mushrooms too and said it was the largest of this type of mushroom he had ever seen. Too bad I didn't get a picture.

barefoot serpent 10-21-2008 12:22 PM

giant puffball

we get those - softball size or larger. I've seen them in Colorado up to basketball size.

They can look like another poisonous kind but are amorphous when dissected.

glatt 10-21-2008 12:27 PM

Yeah, that's right. And the thing is, I saw it growing, and didn't want a big mushroom in my yard, so I kicked it over and broke the stem. He was all excited about the broken one. I wonder how big it would have grown? Oh and the squirrels or something liked to take bites out of them.

classicman 10-21-2008 12:28 PM

This has been a great fall season so far. We did have a frost 2 nights ago so without a bit of a break and some warmer weather, that may be the end of it. :(

barefoot serpent 10-21-2008 12:29 PM

This monster nearly ate a little girl and her pet rabbit this summer in Lawrence.

classicman 10-21-2008 12:32 PM

ahh, the Berkeley Polypore - I found on last year or 2 years ago - not nearly that big, but I did almost drive off the road when I first saw it.

It was a huge faery ring too, and even now with it mowed down you can still see where they were, the grass is darker green

Yeah as the ring was along side the highway on the outer road. They frown on toplessness around there lol. The other pictures were on private property.

Not too bad though for an old lady

Couple of interesting mushrooms. Together they looked just like a pair of demon horns poking up out of the ground.

classicman 06-18-2009 09:45 PM

They're called stinkhorns
and that is a great site for those interested in mushrooms.

Take a whiff of them up close and personal - but don't touch - the "stink" stays with you and its not good!
