I'm revising my strategy this year based on info I gleaned from actuarial tables. As you live longer your life expectancy increases. A 64 y.o. person has a shorter life expectancy than a 75 year old person. A newborn has a shorter life expectancy than a 70 year old.

Last year my strategy was to pack the list with 90 year olds in otherwise good health. This year I am aiming lower in age and going for people with dodgy constitutions.

You can expect Zsa Zsa again and Ali, of course. I need to think a bit before my list is official.

glatt 12-21-2011 10:33 AM

Yes, and no.

A 65 year old is expected to live 17 more years. A 75 year old is expected to live 10 more years.

So if you pick a 75 year old, they are more likely to die in the next year than a 65 year old, but they are also more likely to be an older age when they die, because they already are an older age.

Right, I was thinking that a 65 y.o. in poor health is a better contender than an 85 y.o. who is swimming a few miles a day.

Note how many 90 y.o. on my list are still going strong, whereas...

I like that list second to mine. I was considering Asner but decided he's not deathly, just grouchy.

Griff 12-29-2011 09:02 AM

I figure one of those three girls is going to pile up a sportscar this year. Mahmoud is begging for a missile strike or a coup. Dick and Ed are just on the clock and finishing with drunk musicians is just a sensible play. I had to check on Shane, unbelievable that he keeps on.

Nice play with Bart Starr. Thinking back, early steroid era football players might be a smart angle.

Undertoad 12-29-2011 09:47 AM

Yessir, well I was looking him up in the Wikipedia and saw this line:

Quote:

He is one of five Green Bay Packers to have his number (15) retired by the team. The others are Tony Canadeo (3), Don Hutson (14), Ray Nitschke (66), and Reggie White (92). Of the five, only Starr is still living.
Good enough.

We need Monster here, stat.
No adding celebs after news which suggests their death is imminent, as in news reports that they are already dead, even if they are still dodging the coffin.

I'd accept it on 2 Jan, but 22 Jan is cheaty.
So there.

Is it a bigger cheat, though, than removing the one that didn't die in order to make room?

jimhelm 01-22-2012 11:16 AM

Sad that jo pa carked it, but totally predictable. How many points do I get?

Sent using magic.

classicman 01-22-2012 11:23 AM

He was 85. So that's 15 + 10 = 25 points ... I think.

footfootfoot 01-22-2012 11:27 AM

First, link to the official rules from the start of the game, not the rules that you make up as you go along.

Second, I left #10 intentionally empty so I could add a promising candidate that might show up. I never removed anyone from my 2012 list, it has always been a list of 9.

third, eat me.

fff ain't gettin squat in my book. He must think we're all mental nuts.

footfootfoot 01-23-2012 11:50 AM

Like I said, it doesn't show anywhere in the rules that you can't add someone in the 11th hour. Just because I can think outside the box and had the foresight to leave a slot open for latecomers doesn't mean that you're not as good as me.

Because I am better than you means that you aren't as good as me.

I'll still win even without that pedo's points.

And if I don't get those points I will add another name to make my list of ten.

Rhianne 01-23-2012 04:34 PM

I wasn't trying to be serious.

To make a logical extension to your point though, then there's nothing to stop someone who hasn't entered yet from making their list by adding individuals as the year goes on and surely that would be against the spirit of the rules if not the letter.

Clodfobble 01-23-2012 05:27 PM

On the other hand, if you add people in July you only have 6 months for them to hurry up and die instead of a full year. Your window is smaller. Not that it matters to me, because this game requires too long of an attention span for me to play. I voted against foot getting the points in the other thread, because I can't condone rewarding someone who has a long attention span and follows the news closely. That sort of person has their own rewards coming, and I feel they should help shoulder the burden for the less fortunate.

footfootfoot 01-23-2012 06:42 PM

That's just it, I don't follow the news closely. I use wikipedia to generate my lists. I have no idea who a lot of those people are.

glatt 01-24-2012 08:11 AM

If Foot did something not specifically prohibited by the rules, and the only way he can be opposed is to fall back on some notion of honor or fairness, it seems like there's not a lot of footing there. I mean the game isn't exactly an honorable one. It's all about betting on people's deaths. I think he was clever and funny to think so quickly about this after the false news reports but before the death.

monster 01-24-2012 08:43 AM

I have to say I agree. I don't want to, but I do. If I'm really honest, I presumed this was his plan when he only submitted 9 and it didn't bother me. I just didn't expect it to be so nicely handed over on a plate, but them's the breaks..... I couldn't care less either way, really.
