Sounds like a coal seam fire.

As in http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/...lia/55213824/1

Eta Zen's story, that is.

orthodoc 01-21-2013 05:11 PM

Great pics, Grav! I can even see the Canadian one clearly :p:

DanaC 01-22-2013 04:41 AM

Might be worth pointing out that a pic of the centre of London isn't representative of the country as a whole :p

I took my dog out for his morning walk yesterday and he had to basically burrow his way to the gate.

Tis true though that it takes very little snow to bring the country to a halt. We get deep countrywide snowfall about once every 2-3 years.

Gravdigr 01-22-2013 02:14 PM

The American picture represents America with one hundred percent accuracy.

It all looks just like that picture.

Even Hawaii.

Is Obama backing the Muslim Brotherhood? He wants Egypt to get back to elected leaders, but I don't think he'd be too put out if they did it by running new Brotherhoodless elections.

Gravdigr 08-30-2013 02:46 PM

NFC. Clipped from Brit paper, looks like.

I just clipped it cuz it's funny, not aware of, nor responsible for accuracy.

Gravdigr 08-30-2013 02:47 PM

I don't know how you got anything outta that, really.

Probably not, at least not one people pay for.
They would never print so many exclamation marks (known in the trade as dog's cocks) and there would be nothing to blank out after London.

Please tell me that's all about convenience, so a "comfort break" allows you to top up on funds too.
And not because high-rollers really wipe their arses on currency.

Hell, if there was an unflushed $100 I'd fish it out.
Shit washes off.

Actually all of the above is obscene.
Including my attitude.

I disagree. The press has moved with the times, and whilst they might still be parsimonious with exclamation points in their own articles, it would be bad form to edit them out of a letter to the editor where they were clearly used to excess deliberately for emphasis.

This article touches on the issue (and also calls them dog's cocks)

http://www.theguardian.com/books/200...rk-punctuation

Also, the blacking is, I believe, over the postcode. This could have changed since I left, but it used to be that the first part of the postcode was printed for contributors from London because it is so big.

Well, that's just sic! :p:

Yeah, you can't really edit a letter to the editor to make it more grammatically or structurally correct, or more appealing to the well-read folks. Or else they could have made it read:

Dear Sir:

Verily, it has come to my attention that the country of Iran has chosen to support Assad, whilst Gulf States have announced their intention to oppose Assad. It is my belief that Assad has expressed ill feelings towards the Muslim Brotherhood while the Muslim Brotherhood (as well as United States President Obama) are against General Sisi.

You get rid of the errors, the extraneous exclamation points, and the one sentence paragraphs, and it isn't that guy's letter anymore.

Nor is it humorous, anymore.

infinite monkey 09-12-2013 02:45 PM

But my humorless rendition of the letter was tres humorful (at least in my head.)

Tunisia, Feminist Paradise?

I wouldn't believe it if I weren't sitting here in Tunisia's parliament building. But I just watched the nation's constituent assembly adopt, 116-40 with 32 abstentions, an amendment to its draft constitution requiring the government to create parity for women in all legislative assemblies in the country, national as well as local. After the vote, the assembly and audience stood up spontaneously and sang the national anthem. There wasn't a dry eye in the house -- including mine.

This historic moment is embedded in another historic moment of still greater scope. For the first time in the history of an Arabic-speaking country, a freely elected assembly is publicly debating and finalizing a constitution without an occupying army, a king or a dictator anywhere. The Arab Spring has either struggled or failed everywhere else, but in Tunisia, a democratic constitutional victory is in view.
**APPLAUSE** (Because I don't know the Tunisian National Anthem; maybe if you hummed a few bars....)

FYI: The big (6-8") black pipe is a vacuum line. They're vacuuming the dirt out from around the cars. Also visible is the front of a conveyor for carrying the dirt out to a truck. Where it is then inspected for loose car parts.

He asked the Lord for a pickem-up truck, so he could court Cindy-Lou.
The picture is his prayers being answered.

A tree has grown through the bed between the rear axle and the tailgate/bumper, and has continued to do so after there was no more clearance between the two, lifting the truck into the air.

I'm pretty impressed.

glatt 03-31-2015 07:33 AM

Thanks! My depth perception just wasn't there. I thought the truck was in front of the tree in the picture.

I thought trees grew from the top, and lower branches stayed where they are?

Clodfobble 03-31-2015 08:44 AM

I wonder if the engine had been removed. Otherwise that's a lot of weight to be carrying off-balance like that.
