one formation is called biplane when they're stacked vertically. Looks suicidal to me. I wouldn't want to be close to the other fella's canopy nor he mine.

It was the camera that gave me away, wasn't it?

Correct!

TheMercenary 09-22-2007 05:48 PM

Cool, I have done a number of jumps out of Black Hawks. I thought it was a bit scarier than jumping out of a AC moving at 125 knots. When the Helo stands still there is a HUGE delay in your shoot opening when jumping static line. It is only a few more seconds but it seems like it lasts forever.

think-floyd 09-22-2007 08:42 PM

did the guy with the flag get booed for letting it touch the ground when he landed?

xoxoxoBruce 09-22-2007 11:55 PM

Welcome to the Cellar, think-floyd.:D

think-floyd 09-23-2007 09:08 PM

thanks bruce :) I'm a long time reader of the Iotd, and lurker of the main cellar for a while now too. Was just waiting for the right moment to butt in :D

That's how they mate.

This is me, last fall. Where was I, or what was I doing?

Sundae 09-27-2007 12:35 PM

IF you're going to make my stomach roll with your injuries (ICK!) at least have the courtesy to sneak your ballbag into to picture by taking the photo from below.

BTW, if that's not blood I apologise. The ballbag request stands though.

barefoot serpent 09-27-2007 12:45 PM

Extreme candied apple making?

theotherguy 09-27-2007 12:49 PM

Scratching your sac with a sharp object while riding in a buckboard up a mountain is never a good idea. Blood will be drawn every time.

Well, that's what it's supposed to look like. (There's a clue.)

glatt 09-27-2007 01:10 PM

Uh, Halloween costume?

theotherguy 09-27-2007 01:11 PM

Looks like you have a "boner" there.

Yes, exactly. I thought the ham bone would give it away. (This was taken at the end of the night and most of the wound and scab effects were by then ground into the carpet.)

But there is one real scar visible on my knee from a mountain biking accident.

glatt 09-27-2007 01:13 PM

You were a "patient" for a medical/emergency drill of some sort.

edit: Uh, never mind.

jester 09-27-2007 01:22 PM

how did it get "ground" into the carpet. what exactly were you doing?

glatt 10-16-2007 11:32 AM

confetti being dropped in front of the floodlights at a nighttime sporting event.

BigV 10-16-2007 11:44 AM

Unfair or not, I hold you to a somewhat higher standard glatt. I regret that I must reject your answer. You are partly correct, but missing an important element.

Please try again.

glatt 10-16-2007 11:48 AM

Hmmm

Hundreds of flash bulbs going off in the distant stands at a night time sporting event.

Edit: Nah, it's not that.

ZenGum 10-16-2007 12:03 PM

Must be: millions of moths mobbing the .... lights at a major sporting meet.

BigV 10-16-2007 12:22 PM

KA-billions of moths. Correct!

nice assist glatt. nice shot zengum.

Two more for context. The bats were out that night too. I like the second picture. Kinetic, frenetic. What is the appeal of the flame for the moth anyway?

ZenGum 10-16-2007 12:36 PM

Cool pictures! Especially the long exposure one.

Why do moths do that?

I've seen some prolonged debate on it, the leading theory seems to be that moths navigate by the moon, flying either straight toward it or at a fixed angle relative to it.
If it is straight toward, then as soon as a they see a light the buzz straight in. If they are trying to keep it at an angle, say, 30 degrees to starboard, they will start to pass the light and spiral in towards it. Either way they find the light pretty fast.

glatt 10-16-2007 12:55 PM

Ditto the long exposure one, that's cool.

How did you do that? They didn't let a tripod into the game, did they?

BigV 10-16-2007 02:35 PM

Thanks both of you for your kind remarks.

I love it too.

Technically, no tripod. Braced camera... on car outside stadium. Notice we're looking at the backs of the lights. I'm outside the stadium, on the way home. The swarming picture would have warranted a video, just .. wow. But all I got was the still, and it will have to do.

More to come.

CAFE?

It must be the Corporate Average Fuel Economy building.

glatt 10-16-2007 03:18 PM

My serious guess is that it's a Safeway supermarket that is being torn down or sold.

BigV 10-16-2007 03:35 PM

nope nope

clue one: it flows neatly from previous what is it.

BigV 10-16-2007 04:16 PM

clue two: local landmark

barefoot serpent 10-16-2007 04:27 PM

SAFECO Field sign?

BigV 10-16-2007 04:59 PM

Correct!

Congratulations barefoot serpent! The picture was taken veeerrrrryyy close to the sign from the pavement. Looking practically straight up.

Good call!

ZenGum 10-29-2007 11:45 PM

You are shining your maglight into your crotch.

Tell me, does the warmth turn you on?

BigV 10-30-2007 02:28 AM

Correct. And no.

The two most recent pictures were taken minutes apart. I did the one with the light in my hand first, dropped the light into my lap to review the image on the display of the camera, looked down and thought it made an interesting image. The highly saturated colors at opposite ends of the spectrum struck me as a very interesting contrast. Both pictures are unedited, save resizing.

By the way, it's not a Maglite. It's from Inova the 2L model.

LabRat 10-30-2007 08:56 AM

First the wedding ring, then a crotch shot.

You sir, are a tease.

Hint: Doesn't take batteries.

Shawnee123 11-19-2007 01:16 PM

Some kind of fishing lure?

glatt 11-19-2007 01:21 PM

Not a fishing lure.

Spexxvet 11-19-2007 01:24 PM
