An Easy One?

I think that this is an easy one. What is this, or what is it part of? You don't need to be too specific.

Elspode 09-05-2007 06:39 PM

Looks like bonnet and lid hydraulics on a show car.

Griff 09-05-2007 06:50 PM

Heh, he said hydraulics.

beauregaardhooligan 09-05-2007 06:57 PM

A true classic.

Elspode 09-05-2007 07:04 PM

Okay, so it was only the lid hydraulics. What do I win?

beauregaardhooligan 09-05-2007 07:09 PM

Well, technically, they are the doors.
But I'll split it with you!

HungLikeJesus 09-05-2007 08:13 PM

I'm giving Elspode 2 out of 5, and beauregaardhooligan 5/5.

I took these pictures when I was in Stuttgart last month. Here are two bigger views.

There was also a bare frame on display, and an explanation that the door design was due to the frame rail location. I don't know why the style was discontinued.

It's a very attractive car, and I'd love to have one.

I can't help wondering though, what it was like to climb in and out of one. You might be able to stretch your foot across that door frame and place it onto the floor and then slide in and sit down all in one motion to get into the car. Then pick up your outside foot and lift it up, over and in. Getting out has got to be a major pain. You could crawl out and exit hands first onto the ground. Or stand up on the seat, all hunched over so you don't hit the door above your head and hop out, or try to do the entrance move in reverse. I don't see any handles to pull yourself up as you try to get out. Basically, it looks like a real challenge to enter and exit this car. It's that very high and wide threshold, and the lack of head room space above the door that would make it such a challenge.

To be fair, I've never tried it, and am only guessing based on the pictures. Maybe it's really easy.

HungLikeJesus 09-06-2007 09:38 AM

glatt - now I feel stupid for not trying that when I had the chance. I was standing right there and could have been in and out before the guards could do anything.

The doors seem like they'd be good for tight parking spaces. I don't think they'd need as much side clearance as regular doors.

Edit: This is from Wikipedia:
The 300SL was best known for both its distinctive gullwing or butterfly wing doors and for being the first-ever gasoline-powered car equipped with fuel injection directly into the combustion chamber. The gullwing version was available from March 1955 to 1957. In Mercedes-Benz fashion, the "300" referred to the engine's cylinder displacement, in this case, three liters. The "SL", as applied to a roadster, stood for "Sport Leicht" or "Sport Light."
...
The gullwing doors, hinged at the roof and so named because the open doors resembled a bird's outstretched wings, were implemented as such to accommodate for the car's tubular chassis, designed by DBAG's chief developing engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut. Part of the chassis passed through what would be the lower half of a standard door.

This tubular chassis was a necessity, as the original car was designed solely for racing and needed to be as light as possible due to the rather underpowered original, carbureted, engine, while still providing a high level of strength. This required the driver and any passengers to do some gymnastics to get in or out of the car, usually by sitting on and sliding across the wide door sill. A steering wheel with a tilt-away column made the process considerably easier.

Just hope to hell you don't end upside down, trapped in a burning wreck.

That's very perceptive of you. I can't tell if the windows open or not. It looks like they might be hinged.

beauregaardhooligan 09-06-2007 10:07 PM

I recognized it because my brother's MotherInLaw had one.
A very unique car. Here's a link to the site I got the pic from.

a butt plug?

xoxoxoBruce 09-07-2007 04:11 AM

Fishing weight?

glatt 09-07-2007 08:01 AM

I'm guessing is has something to do with boats and lines. Fishing weight sounds good. Or some sort of hardware used in rope rigging. Not terribly precise there huh?

Spexxvet 09-07-2007 08:06 AM

One of those Klingon double-bladed weapons? A backpack for a robot?

Actually, I agree with the fishing weight. The line goes through the two slits, which you squeeze shut to hold it in place.

Or its a metal bone

Zip. I have not a clue, but while we're waiting, I'll pitch this in.
Bruce sent me something about old cars and such, is what brought this to mind.

zippyt 09-07-2007 08:52 AM

Nope ,
Nope ,
Nope ,
Nope , but good guesses all .
Now how long should this go befor it reveal what it is ??

glatt 09-07-2007 10:13 AM

One final guess from me, and then I give up.

You are a scales guy, right?

I'm going to guess that it's some sort of standardized weight for calibrating scales. Only thing is it looks really small for doing truck scales. But that's still my guess.

Flint 09-07-2007 10:21 AM

The notches, and the curvature, seem to indicate some kind of flexible, connective function. It reminds me, somehow, of a u-joint.

busterb 09-07-2007 02:36 PM

nope, but I'll not give you, Bruce any more clues. Because you know

Is it part of the windshield of a Florida school bus?

Griff 09-07-2007 02:43 PM

cover over a small engine with a pull cord... chainsaw?

beauregaardhooligan 09-07-2007 05:04 PM

The honeycomb-like part looks like an air-filter cover from a lawn mower, and old gaskets.

busterb 09-10-2007 04:06 PM

Ok. If you had a car, date, friends and a few bucks back in the late 50s, 60s or perhaps the 70s you might, or should have used one of these.

glatt 09-10-2007 04:09 PM

Is it a speaker for ordering food at a drive in?

If not that, it must be the speaker you put inside your window when watching the movie.

Flint 09-10-2007 04:09 PM

Or a drive-in movie speaker. To order movie watching to get in your ear.

Huh?

Let me try that language out:

"To buy ice cream eating to see cherry on top."

Flint 09-10-2007 04:19 PM

Hi, my name is glatt, and I'm a late editor.

You said it was a drive-in speaker "to order food" so I said, maybe it is to "order" something else: the movie. Or the watching of the movie. Well, not the actual watching of the movie, but to "order" a certain part of it. To get in your ear. To order movie watching to get in your ear. Shut up.
