August 1, 2012 - Olympics' Mascot and Logo

Meet Wenlock and Mandeville, the creations of an agency called Iris for £400,000.

Quote:

Wenlock is named after Much Wenlock, the Shropshire town that inspired Pierre de Coubertin to launch the modern Olympics. Mandeville is named after the town of Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire where the Paralympics were founded.
In addition to the names having much meaning, every part of the mascots have meaning, as shown below.

A few other variations are floating around, too.

The figure designs are more than cute, quite slick I think.
But cyclops don't quite do it for me... I need two (or more) eyes.

these things are getting more and more uselessly disturbing, aren't they.

If you have to publish a chart explaining the symbolism, it stops being symbolic.

Stoke Mandeville is our local hospital. I was born there, as were my siblings, niece & nephew and great-nephews.
So I'm biased.

They look like a teletubby on LSD.

I liked Russia's mascot, Fatov. He represented the Russian values of sloth and alcoholism...

(really, really need to quit this...)

The best thing I can say about the mascots is they are not as bad as the logo (Lisa Simpson performing fellatio).

ZenGum 08-02-2012 06:24 AM

How could a company called Iris fail to put irises in the eyes of those things?

I'll bet they're being eye-ronic.

Lamplighter 08-02-2012 08:01 AM

I'll bet they're being eye-conic.

Cyber Wolf 08-02-2012 09:26 AM

Is it me or do the mascot designers just strive to be more abstract than the last ones each and every time?

Oh hell. Now I can't unsee it. Kind of like that vase or faces thing.

xoxoxoBruce 08-02-2012 11:20 PM

No irises, they're CCTV cameras.

Adak 08-03-2012 08:26 AM

Clearly, we need to be compassionate about all this, and not laugh hysterically at these gawd-awful creations, and the insipid inspirations that created them. Least we can do is save our rawer episodes of hilarity, until either the Brits are not around, or are too drunk to care.

"Have another pint, gov'ner" - that is the worst mascot "since Jesus", by a long shot.

Hahahahahahahaha!!

Has anyone seen these mascots in use? I don't think I've seen them anywhere other than in articles talking about the mascots. Maybe they were in the opening ceremonies for a second or two, but I'm probably misremembering that.
