Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn?
She's 101 years old, and those lyrics were written 40 years ago.

monster 01-02-2019 07:30 PM

I don't remember her from then, but she's been wheeled out at remembrance things all my life...... and "We'll Meet Again" is 80 years old, not 40 :/ Which lyrics are you thinking of?

xoxoxoBruce 01-03-2019 12:19 AM

I met her when I was a teen. A radio/TV station in Hartford CT, loaned interest free money to teens so they could buy livestock for 4-H participation, and the money didn't have to be paid back until the critter was sold. Anyway, every summer they had a picnic/BBQ for all the kids borrowing money and their families, on top of a mountain where the broadcast antennae were located.
Along with the food was live entertainment, that year including Vera Lynn. Then they would do several interviews with each entertainer for various news and entertainment shows on their stations. At each interview they would randomly pick a half dozen of the kids to be included so they could remind the listeners/viewers of the public service (good deed) they were doing.

Remember how she said that
We would meet again

Vera, Vera
What has become of you?
Does anybody else in here
Feel the way I do?"

Vera, from Pink Floyd's 'The Wall'

other than that, I have no idea who she is

There was a rather sad article in the press this morning about Billy Connolly:

Quote:

Sir Billy Connolly admitted he is "near the end" and life is "slipping away" as he spoke about his life with Parkinson's disease.
The revered comedian was diagnosed with the degenerative neurological condition in 2013 and will appear in the second part of his BBC documentary series Made In Scotland on Friday.

Sir Billy will reflect on his life and career in showbiz while insisting he is not scared of death.
According to the Daily Mirror, he will say: "My life, it's slipping away and I can feel it and I should. I'm 75, I'm near the end.
"I'm a damn sight nearer the end than I am the beginning. But it doesn't frighten me, it's an adventure and it is quite interesting to see myself slipping away.

"As bits slip off and leave me, talents leave and attributes leave. I don't have the balance I used to have, I don't have the energy I used to have.
I can't hear the way I used to hear, I can't see as good as I used to. I can't remember the way I used to remember.
"And they all came one at a time and they just slipped away, thank you. It is like somebody is in charge of you and they are saying 'right, I added all these bits when you were a youth, now it is time to subtract'."
Clive James has been 'near the end' since 2012 and seems to have made quite a good living out of dying. :)

I wish them both well.

Undertoad 01-03-2019 09:35 AM

Billy's insightful and good-humoured even near the end

Gravdigr 01-03-2019 12:26 PM

I could listen to Billy Connolly talk forever.

I hear his name, or see him, and always think of 'il Duce' from Boondock Saints.

Gravdigr 01-03-2019 12:27 PM

Didn't he do a doc about Scotland?

Or something?

I can’t believe you people killed Doris Day. That’s the worst.

Gravdigr 05-13-2019 01:00 PM

Doris Day. I read that she semi-recently gave $250,000 to some animal charity/rescue op. That stuck out to me, cuz I don't think DD has done anything in quite some time.

Out of curiosity, I looked her up on Celebritynetworth.com, which described her as a singer/actress/real estate mogul/animal righ--whut'sthatnow? Real estate mogul you say?

They gave her net worth at her time of death at ~$200,000,000.

Me : "I killed Doris Day"
Younger Cow Orker: "Never heard of her".

Doris Day sold more than a million copies of "Que Sera, Sera" with the Les Brown band in 1945.
Performed on Bob Hope's weekly radio show for 2 years and toured extensively.
1950-53 albums from 6 of her movie musicals charted Top 10, 3 at No. 1.
1950 US soldiers voted her, “the girl we’d most like to take a slow boat home with”.
1959-69, 6 Golden Globe nominations for best female performance.
Early ‘60s, Top Box Office Star with nearly 40 movies, and 1st place 4 times with theater owners.
Co-starred with James Cagney, Kirk Douglas, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, James Garner, Tony Randall, David Niven, Rex Harrison, Rock Hudson, Ronald Reagan, and Cary Grant.

Recently she hired a new business manager. He replaced the board of the Doris Day Animal Foundation with his direct family, and changed the security staff at her estate, keeping her only Grandson from seeing her during her last week.

Someone found Artie Lange doing menial labor pumping gas, probably as a part of his drug program, and he is looking skinnier and renewed like it is working.

Well that didn't take long: Artie Lange re-arrested and back in jail on probation violation possibly related to being pulled over with a bag of heroin in his car a few weeks ago.

Time to die, Art, your last redeeming quality will be as an example for the world to see... and winning me this pool

Flint 05-21-2019 05:24 PM

What the hell, I didn't even say Tim Conway at all.

Unrelated, I just saw pictures of Artie Lange's nose.

Quote:

“Lange has had to have surgery on his nose due to years of snorting cocaine and heroin — and one incident in which he accidentally snorted glass when trying to suck up smashed OxyContin tablets — which left him with no septum..."

Griff 05-22-2019 10:47 AM

Good ...... Lord

Undertoad 09-11-2019 12:32 AM

Artie Lange is claiming over 7 months sober today, but that is A) not actually true, and B) mostly due to his work with the New Jersey state penal institutions. Now that he is out of jail, let's see what happens next.
