12/12/2005: Cigarette smoke art

http://cellar.org/2005/justsmoke.jpg

Photographer Thomas Herbrich uses nothing but cigarette smoke to produce these interesting forms.

How he does it, I have no idea...

great looking photos and I must say a pretty origional concept.
Seems to me he would have tried different colors, tho..... Maybe He's just getting this one off the ground.
good find, UT!

reminds me of the ship that Gandalf the Grey made out of the Halfling's leaf smoke...cool.

I can't wait until someone sees the Virgin Mary in one and everyone starts making pilgrimages to his house, leaving hundreds of pounds of flowers and decorating his fence with ribbons and shiat.

Now if only Golden Palace could buy it....

I want to know how he's controlling the airflow to be able to do such things with smoke.

Troubleshooter 12-12-2005 01:49 PM

The anti-anti-smoking poeple need to hire that guy.

capnhowdy 12-12-2005 02:08 PM

someone will try to sue him for second-hand smoke.

Looking at all the images, most have jagged edges. They seem to be pieced together from bits of photographed smoke.
Color would ruin the illusion because it would show it's obviously manipulated.
His other galleries are great, too. :2cents:

I'm not naughty, I'm just smoked that way!

milkfish 12-12-2005 09:27 PM

Graham has similar images of smoke. Don't know if they're tobacco-based, however.

Undertoad 12-12-2005 09:31 PM

Outstanding! Thanks milkfish, and welcome.

These are pictures are of ordinary smoke that have been post processed on the computer.

The smoke comes from burning incense sticks and was photographed in a studio using off camera flash lighting to the side or rear of the subject. It is important to have a black background and well lit smoke, to produce a high contrast frozen image.

In post processing the pictures with a black background have been edited to change the colour of the smoke. The pictures with a white background were inverted before any colour adjustments were applies.

I didn't know that smoke could be this beautiful.
And maybe I need a shrink too.. I see ladys in some of them.. :D

*edit: didn't see xoB pic until I logged in.*
