December 30, 2007: Surfing

From Freshdaily, via Neatorama....

From The Great White North, come these dedicated (nuts?) surfers, braving the winter storms on Lake Ontario, to ride the waves.

Hardcore Toronto surfers Mark Karvonen, Walter Tuokkola, and Geoff Johnson, on the other hand, got suited in their neoprene wet suits, waxed their boards, and headed down to Ashbridge's Bay to ride the wicked waves of Lake Ontario.

Do you winter surf often?

Mark: Yes, we definitely surf in the winter. Fall season is best however. It's simple science. In the fall, water temperatures are still higher from the summer months, but outside temps have fallen and the wind is at its strongest. This combination produces frequent swells on the Lakes. My first winter surfing session was also my first time ever surfing. My friends and I drove to Wasaga Beach. It was a blizzard and -28°C. We jumped off an ice shelf and paddled through an ice field to get to the waves.
I want to know how the get such big balls in their wetsuits?
Oh yeah... shrinkage.

Dunno about balls, but definitely nuts.

hmmmmmmmmmm, wouldn't they get like, frostbite or something on their face, since it is wet, uncovered, and is below 0 outside?

Welcome to the Cellar, xiphos. :D
They talked about the cold on their faces in the link.

They have ice on their visors. I can barely stand a little wind on my face -- I can't imagine what it must feel like to have ice forming on your head. Just looking at these pictures makes me cold, but it's neat to see people have a great time regardless of the biting weather.

Forget getting those big balls in the wetsuit, how in the HELL do they find their balls afterwards?!

Griff 12-31-2007 08:34 PM

That's easy, just cough 'em up.

Nikolai 01-01-2008 10:38 AM

I wonder if they suffer from blue balls?

Eenoob 01-01-2008 06:16 PM

They are from Finland. Tuokkola and Karvonen are finnish last names.
