As IotD has always been a cataloguer of big-ass food:

Quote:

A more than 20-kilo (41-lb) mushroom has been picked in a forest in Mexico's southernmost state of Chiapas, university officials said Tuesday.

The white mushroom, macrocybe titans, measured a towering 70 cm (27 in) tall, was found near Tapachula, near the Guatemalan border, according to the Southern Border University Center.

Wow - micology is one of my most favored hobbies. I have seen a lot of oddly shaped and/or colored mushrooms in my day, but that thing is outrageously huge!

If you ate that mushroom your whole world would become the Smurfs or something like that.

Where's the hookah smoking caterpillar? There has to be a hookah smokin' caterpillar with a mushroom like that!

xoxoxoBruce 08-12-2007 03:18 PM

The Chiapas farmer that found it has been gathering these mushrooms for some time, trying to figure out how to infuse the super size gene into his pot plants

but I gather it's supposed to grow big, hence the appellation, "titans"?

I can't tolerate the fungus. It ranks slightly lower on my worst foods list than coconut, which is known to cause projectile vomiting.

There is no danger of me offering to eat this IOTD.

I've seen giant puffballs in Colorado that approach that size. But they don't have the 'stem' part -- they're all 'cap'.

From Griff's article:

Genetically Closer to People

In other research, scientists have determined that fungi are more closely related to human beings and animals than to other plants.

Moreover, while humans and most species are divided into only two sexes, mushrooms contain over 36,000 sexes.

Talk about a confusing bar scene at the fungus dating spot.
