Disney announced today that its acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd. The deal includes the “Star Wars” franchise, and plans have been launched to make a seventh film in the “Star Wars” series, and to continue the franchise beyond that.

In a press release, the company announced “Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.”

The release went on to say “Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm…Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.”

Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company, said in the release that there is “substantial pent up demand” for a new “Star Wars” movie. “In 2015, we’re planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the ‘Disney-Lucasfilm’ brand,” Iger said. “That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.”

Hm.

I wonder what rights, if any, Lucas retained.

Does this mean that episodes 4-6 could be released on Blu-ray in their original form?

Ibby 10-30-2012 06:43 PM

MTV actually has a decent analysis, in which they mention that disney is VERY likely to release the originals on blu-ray.

Gah! Disney? Lucas couldn't find a deep pocket company that likes film?

I suspect the right to a very comfortably funded retirement, for one.

Of course Disney wants the Star Wars franchise, it's got a princess.

Sure, all the Disney princesses look great. It's their attitudes and actions that make them questionable role models.

Wrong Episode. What has just happened?

It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Although the Death Star has been destroyed, Imperial tropps have drive the Rebel Forces from their hidden base and pursed them across the galaxy.
Disney just bought Lucasfilm. Episode V. The Empire Strikes Back.

I'm pleased to hear Disney and Lucasfilm are doing this.

They can't fuck it up worse than Lucas did.

Undertoad 10-31-2012 09:33 AM

Disney has some people in their company that can fix the franchise.

Disney owns Pixar.

Disney will not have their ego in the way of hiring a mediocre writer. Someone who can do better that the crappy lines Lucas wrote.

Take this gem:

"You're so beautiful..."
"It's only because I'm so in love."
"No...it's because I'm so in love with you."
