July 4, 2010: Corvette US flag

http://cellar.org/2010/corvettesflag.jpg

It's the quintessential American car: loud, brute force, fast as all hell, named after a warship, uses far too much fuel, generates only 69 HP per liter, breaks down every 100 miles.

So at the annual gathering of Corvettes in Carlisle, PA, they take as many Corvettes as they can, and they make the flag. This one is from last year; this year, in August, they intend to make an even bigger one...
Quote:

54 Corvettes bigger, for a total of 158 Corvettes – 57 red, 51 white, 35 blue and 15 silver. Half of the event registration fee for all of the 158 Corvettes participating will be donated to Homes for Our Troops, a national non-profit organization, committed to helping those who have selflessly given to their country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries.

Are those balloons on the blue Corvettes pretending to be stars?

Where are the cars that are counted but not in the picture?

Undertoad 07-04-2010 10:02 AM

Probably up on flatbeds, headed to the garage.

Curious why one of the white cars had its door open when the photo was taken.

You philistine UT. 98% of all corvettes are still on the road.

It is rumoured the other 2% made it home.

That was a thief who stumbled on all those Vets and was trying to hot-wire one.

Well, yes on the 69 HP per liter displacement - but that is only true for SOME Corvettes:

Quote:

The results are in from the 2009 ZR1's SAE certification: the 376 cubic inch supercharged LS9 V-8 makes 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque.
That's 169 HP per liter, and sports cars are SUPPOSED to use up a lot of fuel. :eyebrow:

By next year, I'll be running mine on "sea water" from the Gulf of Mexico. :D

Thank you, BP!

Actually it's 6.2 liter so it produces an excellent 100 hp per liter. Very efficient for an eight-banger.

Depends on the specific model. This one IS 376 cubic inches:
Quote:

The Gen IV LS9 is a supercharged 6,162 cc (6.162 L; 376.0 cu in) engine, based on the LS3; the LS7 block was not used due to the higher cylinder pressures created by the supercharger requiring the thicker cylinder walls of the LS3. Cylinder dimensions are now 4.06 in (103.1 mm) bore and 3.62 in (91.9 mm) stroke. It is equipped with an Eaton four-lobe Roots type supercharger. Power output is rated 638 bhp (476 kW)@6500rpm and 604 lb·ft (819 N·m)@3800rpm.

Applications:

* 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
