Top 5

For anyone who's watched "High Fidelity", you know the theme that runs through it of "Top 5 x", X being a varying topic. Songs, Breakups, etc. etc. So, I thought of starting a thread like that.

The ultimate all-time best ever head out on the highway lookin' for adventure song is Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf.

Get your motor running
Head out on the highway
Looking for adventure
In whatever comes our way

Yeah, darling
Gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racing in the wind
And the feeling that I'm under

Yeah, darling
Gonna make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and
Explode into space

Like a true nature child
We were born
Born to be wild
We have climbed so high
Never want to die
Born to be wild
Born to be wild

followed by No Particular Place To Go by Chuck Berry

No Particular Place To Go

Riding along in my automobile
My baby beside me at the wheel
I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile
my curiosity running wild
crusin' and playin' the radio
with no particular place to go

Riding along in my automobile
I's anxious to tell her the way I feel
So I told her softly and sincere
and she leaned and whispered in my ear
cuddlin' more and drivin' slow
with no particular place to go

No particular place to go
So we parked way out on ko-ko-mo
The night was young and the moon was gold
So we both decided to take a stroll
Can you image the way I felt
I couldn't unfasten her safety belt

Riding along in my calaboose
Still trying to get her belt a-loose
all the way home I held a grudge
for the safety belt that wouldn't budge
Crusin' and playing the radio
with no particular place to go

and number three ...

G.T.O.
Ronny and The Daytonas

(Written by John Wilkin)

FADE

for longer trips ... American Pie ... Don McLean

Y'all know the words, so just this chorus ...

Bye, bye Miss American Pie drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry an them good ol' boys were drinkin whiskey and rye singin this will be the day that I die, this will be the day that I die.

Pink - Goin' to California

I'm goin' to California
To live in the summer sun
The streets are made of silver
I'm like a rabbit on the run
Philidelphia freedom
Well its not like you have heard, no, no, no
This city of brotherly love
Is full of pain and hurt

I'm goin' to California
To find my pot of gold
Corruption on every corner
Hustlers sellin' sweets
Baby is home cryin'
While her mom is on the streets
Everybody's dyin'
Have you heard the news today?
A woman in north Phili is mournin'
A bullet took another son away

I'm goin to California
I'm goin far, far, far away

Goin' to California, yes
To resurect my soul
The sun is always shinin', shinin'
Or at least that's what I'm told
I'm goin' to California
There's a better life for me, yes
Goin' to California
I'll write and tell you what I see
I'm goin' to California
Somebody say a prayer for me

*ducks*

I usually break it down by album if its a long trip.
1) David Bowie: Ziggy Stardust
2) Bob Marley: Legend
3) Stevie Ray Vaughan: Live Alive
4) Steve Earl : Guitar Town
5) Dwight Yoakam: Guitars, Cadillacs, etc...

If I'm feeling homicidal I roll in some Warren Zevon or some Doors.

I only have one to add, but add it I must:

The Theme from Peter Gunn by Henry Mancini (the music in the game Spy Hunter)

dave 10-09-2002 11:29 PM

1. Moby - New Dawn Fades
2. Metallica - Disposeable Heroes
3. Twista - Adrenaline Rush
4. Method Man - Even If
5. Puff Daddy and the Family - Victory (Nine Inch Nails remix)

Chewbaccus 10-10-2002 04:17 PM

In no particular order:

1) Moby - Flower
2) Cream - I Feel Free
3) Beastie Boys - No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn
4) Kottonmouth Kings - Bump
5) Adema - Freaking Out

I've found rock and subsequent subgenres to be most effective on those long stretches of highway, and raps to be valuable when you're stuck in traffic.

Anyone want to change the topic?

vsp 10-10-2002 04:24 PM

A lot of Zappa, a lot of Stephen Lynch, a lot of XTC when I'm feeling mellower, a lot of Bill Hicks when I'm not.

warch 10-10-2002 04:40 PM

On a straight road trip, I've found its a really good idea to have, in your arsenal, a raucous Louis Prima recording to make it over the 3:00 AM hurdle, at least till you sense sun-up. Its a absurd turbo booster.

elSicomoro 10-10-2002 08:15 PM

Not in order

Led Zeppelin: "Rock and Roll"
Danzig: "Brand New God"
Underworld: "Cups"
Reverend Horton Heat: "Big Sky/Baddest of the Bad"
Portishead: "Humming"

MaggieL 10-10-2002 08:50 PM

Gotta agree with Nic about the Steppenwolf. The problem with it is it doesn't last long enough.

There's a number of Aftro Celt Sound System tracks that will see you though a long drive. Stay away from the the hypnotic ones unless you're not sleepy at all. "Hypnotica" can be good in cruise if you've stioked up with enough coffee. "Amber" is beautiful, but way too soporific. "Riding the Waves" is excellent, as are "Whirl-Y-Reel" and "Big Cat".

David Wilcox' s "Eye of the Hurricane" travels well. And Don Fagen's "Trans-Island Highway" is thematically correct. Almost anything by the Doobie Brothers works, but "Rockin Down the Highway" and "Takin it to the Streets" are obviously right on the money.

juju 10-10-2002 11:21 PM

"Red Barchetta" by Rush is a good driving song.

Aww, c'mon! At least go with the Joy Division one! ;)

The best driving album EVAR is KMFDM's "Nihil". Nothing makes me run over SUV-driving soccer moms than this CD.
