Thank you, James Earl ...

A plaque intended to honor deep-voiced actor James Earl Jones'
annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration instead carried an incorrect name
— that of King's assassin, James Earl Ray.

OMG

How does one make this mistake? Come on...

I actually heard about this yesterday when Jenni and I were getting her new bank account set up. Then it got me thinking - how far is it a mistake? What if it had said

Thank you
James Earl Ray
For Killing That Mouthy Coon

?

"We're sorry, some of our employees don't know the difference between killing mouthy coons and keeping the dream alive. If they send it back, we'll repair it."

Come on. This was done intentionally. It's disappointing, too. Right there under a picture of MLK Jr. who, even after all these years, makes my skin tingle when I hear or read one of his speeches.

1001 posts for dham! congrats.

I wouldnt put up a plack to him. His reputation will be forever tarnished for doing Verizon commercials.

But that sucks. I hope those bastards fix it for free.

Verizon are a bunch of weenies, but JEG is still pretty cool. Gotta dig his voice.

Since the 15th, this is like my 108th post. I had no idea. :)

The bastards aren't going to fix it for free, 'cause they don't have time to do so and get it back to the buyers in time for when it's needed (Monday, I'm guessing). So they're having it fixed locally, which sucks. I'd ping 'em for at least a partial refund, or to pay for the costs of the repair.

> The bastards aren't going to fix it for free, 'cause they don't have time to do so

Actually, my understanding is that they offered to fix it for free, but the people who ordered the plaque refused.

From the same article:

" Wilcox accused Miller's company of being ''culturally insensitive'' and is having the damage repaired locally so it will be ready for Saturday's event."

In other words, they don't have time to ship it back, so they're having it repaired locally, so it will be ready in time.

Which is exactly what I said before.

Thanks for making my point!

James Earl Jones is THE MAN!

Same thing with f's and v's. Your brain will confuse them on you. Oops.

This whole affair reminds me of my favorite quote by Lewis Grizzard: "I fear guilt by typographical error."

As a typographer, graphic designer, signmaker and general image manipulator, I assure you, this is very possibly an accident. Freudian slip, if you will. Still, someone in the proofing dept should be shot.

Agree with both points. I mean, let's face it--Ray's name is much more closely associated with MLK than Jones is. All Jones and King have in common is that they're both black men. But when have you *ever* heard Ray's name without King being mentioned? I'd have to guess never. Add in the "James Earl" commonality and the stage is set for disaster. (I wonder if Tommy Lee Jones and Tommy Lee Bass have the same problem?)

It's a cognitively obvious cock-up. But never, never, never should have been delivered that way.
