Aug 28, 2010: Jarred Bear

This is a jarred Bear, he's not completely jarred, just his head. Several people saw this bear, unable to eat or drink, wandering around Lambert Island up in Thunder bay. Of course everyone wanted to help the poor bear, but Canadians are smart enough to know that's a good way to get dead. The wildlife people tried to trap him but he's too smart.

After chasing him all over the place, they found a scratched up jar with a clump of fur near where he was last reported. He hasn't been spotted since, and they're pretty sure he freed himself.

So this is just a freak case of a bear being harmed by poorly discarded trash?
Sadly no, it happened again two weeks later in Florida. :(

They should put a surgeon general's warning on pickle jars. That'll stop the problem.

Well, those goes his career plans as another Astronaut Bear.

A pellet gun shot to the jar would break the glass, but not harm the bear inside. It would probably leave a thick glass ring around the bear's neck, but at least he'll be able to eat and bite again. Don't Canadians have pellet guns?

It looks plastic to me, kinda mashed in in some places.

Added: Links confirm...it's a plastic jar.

I thought ol' Yogi looked pretty puny for a Canadian black bear...:sniff:

Poor baby.

I watched an episode of Australian Animal Rescue the other day, with a feral cat in a similar situation (tin can around neck - but head free to bite!) Seeing how the cat reacted I can certainly understand why no-one tackled the bear.

Just as an aside - many syndicated reality shows get remade in Aus. And I always prefer them to the original! Animal Rescue, Australia's Next Top Model, The Biggest Loser, Masterchef etc etc. The people are just so much more laid back and simultaneously more honest.

Shows how inept we've become. Can't catch a malnourished bear cub (look at how skinny he is), in weeks of trying.

They've got a spoor right there, that could easily be followed by any decent scent hound. We just don't have them around. We can't track a loose pig, a rabid fox, or a coyote that has attacked a child - nothing. Animal control has become animal "do next to nothing".

It is fun watching animal control or the cops try to catch the pigs or goats, in the bush. An ornery cow or a bull chasing/being chased by, city cops is a great bout of fun to watch.
