What's it like eating on the road so much?

elSicomoro 08-06-2006 06:39 PM

A Mom's Special from Mom's Deli (4412 Jamieson Ave., St. Louis, MO 63109 USA...sorry, no website): ham, roast beef, turkey, munchee cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and homemade 1000 Island dressing on French bread. $4.95 plus tax. Voted the best deli in St. Louis for something like 15 straight years.

bluecuracao 08-06-2006 07:24 PM

A spinach salad, with sesame dressing. I thought we were having spaghetti and meatballs for dinner tonight, so I went with a light lunch. Now I'm starving, and I just found out...no spaghetti and meatballs. :sniff:

elSicomoro 08-06-2006 07:33 PM

So, Mr. Blue is currently doubled over in pain from you kicking him in the nads over no spaghetti? :)

bluecuracao 08-06-2006 08:11 PM

Don't give me any ideas! I'm just cranky enough...

Sundae 08-07-2006 07:23 AM

I'm going to have leftover chip-shop chips (chunky fried chipped potatoes, not french fries) from last night. Reheated in the microwave at work. Can't wait - they're really salt & vinegary and will make the whole place smell like a chip-shop.

Although am having tea & biscuits until I clear this mailout from my desk - chip grease is not really appreciated on letters to GPs.

lots of comfort foods, which are not doing my waistline any good.

There are tricks to finding a good place to eat on the road, several of which involve the use of my CB and THIRD ANTENNA. I am also amused at the four wheel travelers who think that any place a trucker eats just HAS to be good!

My favorite trick, however, involves the creative use of my crock pot for hot meals for little money. I budget $100/week for eats, although I met a gf for lunch yesterday and wound up spending a C note on lunch at Chilies, a place that I usually avoid. Payoff: she brought two friends and I didn't get back "home" until midnight! :thumb2:

Define "gf".

At last count, I have girls of some description in fifteen cities across the US, none are serious and only one wants to get married. That would be the one who can't even advance an opinion on a movie without testing to see what *I* thought first.

I think I'll pass on marriage for, oh, say, FOREVER! I learned my lesson.

Resurrecting this thread because my lunch today is so good I had to share it (virtually, which is always best when there isn't enough to go round).

Marks & Spencers Chicken Dopiaza - because at £1.89 it was silly not to. And a bathura - big fluffy Indian bread -from the vegetarian restaurant (Halli) round the corner.

Both courtesy of my ex Manager who gave me some money for lunch like a sort of surrogate Dad.

Trilby 03-23-2007 10:07 AM

I'm having homemade veggie soup. Sooooooooooo good and so good for you! :)

Shawnee123 03-23-2007 11:01 AM

I just had sliced turkey w/ slice of american cheese on wheat, bag of sunchips, and diet coke. I'm trying SO hard to be good! A big greasy tenderloin was calling my name. [/willpower]

Griff 03-23-2007 11:03 AM

Oatmeal, I'm lazy...

Undertoad 03-23-2007 11:05 AM

Homemade 15 bean soup of ass destruction, including not only 15 different beans but also smoked ham, onion, garlic, stewed tomatoes and chili powder. 6 hours after eating it, nobody will be remaining in your area.

I made 15 bean soup a couple of weeks ago (with 2 ham hocks, carrots, onions etc..). I gave it to my kids for luch and they proceeded to eat it bean-by-bean, quizzing me on the name of each one.

elSicomoro 03-23-2007 05:35 PM

I had a cheese quesadilla from El Burrito Loco...good stuff!

mmmmmm... sounds good. Do you just throw it together or are ratios important?

Undertoad 03-23-2007 07:18 PM

Well my grocery store carries this product which is basically a packet containing the beans, for like a dollar, and then I follow the recipe on it. But what I do that's different, see, is I throw away their silly "ham flavoring packet", and I cut up and add the meat of a smoked ham butt.

That's what it's called, I think. Smoked ham butt.

Anyway after rinsing the beans overnight and slow-simmering for 3 hours, they don't really resemble themselves any longer, the beans, which is how I like it. They all fall apart and create a big mash. And the pieces of ham fall apart in your mouth, they're so tender after all that treatment.

But now I have contributed to the global warming problem through my horrible release of many greenhouse gasses.

zippyt 03-23-2007 09:13 PM

Carol makes it mostly the same way But ( and this But makes ALL the dufference ) she puts a TurboDog in with it !!!

Consider tweaking your soaking method. I usually add lemon juice to all soaking beans (to break the phytates) but I see here that I'm doing it wrong.

Quote:

How does all this science translate into perfect beans? Soak legumes in plenty of water that has been brought to a simmer and poured over the beans; add about 1/4 cup of something acidic (lemon juice, vingear or whey) to black beans, lentils and fava beans but soak other types of beans (white beans, brown beans and dried peas) in plain water--preferably soft water or water with a pinch of baking soda added. You don't need to worry about having the optimal pH if your diet contains animal foods and if the soaking is followed by a long slow cooking. Use the table below to determine approximate soaking times. For beans that require a long soaking time, you may wish to drain, rinse and add more water at least once during the process.
After soaking, drain the beans and rinse well, then add to a pot with more water and bring to a simmer. If digestibility is a problem for you, kombu added to the pot should take care of any pesky oligosaccharides still lurking. Cook those beans gently until completely tender.
The following recipes will transform the humble legume into a delectable, body-and-soul-satisfying dish of epicurean proportion. And very much worthy of polite society.

Beestie 03-23-2007 11:08 PM

Just to add to the collection of legume preparation. I used to listen to Dr. Mirkin on the radio way back when and Diane had a lot of good nutritional info to share.

Perry Winkle 03-24-2007 09:36 AM

Leftover fried pork tenderloin on a sandwich

or

Chicken Nachos

or

Chicken on sourdough

I'll let the cellar decide! You've got an hour or so :P

Undertoad 03-24-2007 09:45 AM

No guac. The problem with a chicken sammich is that I have to figure out what to put on it, and whether to have it hot or cold...

elSicomoro 03-24-2007 03:17 PM

Pancakes sound good. My brother and I are headed to get a couple of beers, then I think I will partake in pancakes.

Hyoi 03-27-2007 03:28 PM

bluecuracao 03-27-2007 08:07 PM

DucksNuts 03-27-2007 09:11 PM

Fish, chips n salad...and orange and a Coke Zero :)

Perry Winkle 03-29-2007 07:12 AM

Today is Medina Kabob, a little restaurant on the other side of town. I'll probably have a veggie samosa, gyro, and hummus.

Sundae 03-29-2007 07:18 AM

Today I treated myself to McDonalds - Quarterpounder with cheese meal. Feel quite sleepy now.

The woman say across from me is eating some generic crisps (chips to you) from a huge bag. She is filling her fist with them and cramming them in her mouth. The greasy smell and the sound is making me feel quite ill - I might have to go back out of the office....

elSicomoro 03-29-2007 07:59 AM

They actually call them QP's over there? I know you guys still use Imperial measurements in the UK, but I thought maybe Royale was the standard name across Europe.

Breakfast sounds good, it being 8am here in St. Louis. I never did have those pancakes Saturday...

They are still QPs, yes. I wonder if they'll change when we finally go metric? I reckon they'll be one of the last things to go, if so. Along with miles....

It might be because we're quite good at calling things by foreign names in the UK. But more likely that we got McDonalds before the rest of Europe (this is a guess btw) and therefore before a name change was deemed necessary.

Undertoad 03-29-2007 10:07 AM

The name will change to "113 Grammer".

reader's note: this marks the 14th time this light joke has been made on the Internet.

elSicomoro 03-29-2007 10:19 AM

Good job...you got in on it early! :)

Shawnee123 03-29-2007 10:22 AM

I really need to get a life outside of movies I like...

Vincent: And you know what they call a... a... a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?
Jules: They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with cheese?
Vincent: No man, they got the metric system. They wouldn't know what the fuck a Quarter Pounder is.
Jules: Then what do they call it?
Vincent: They call it a Royale with cheese.
Jules: A Royale with cheese. What do they call a Big Mac?
Vincent: Well, a Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it le Big-Mac.
Jules: Le Big-Mac. Ha ha ha ha. What do they call a Whopper?
Vincent: I dunno, I didn't go into Burger King.

elSicomoro 03-29-2007 10:28 AM

I love the way Vincent says it when he and Jules are about to smoke those kids.

toaster 03-29-2007 11:46 AM

We're having a pot luck at my office today. So far I have ingested as much food as I usually do in one day and it is not yet noon. We have everything from crab dip to creme filled cupcakes.

Pie 03-29-2007 12:09 PM

Thai green curry beef.

elSicomoro 03-29-2007 12:21 PM

I had some chicken breast strips...because I'm obsessed with boobies.

That was actually breakfast...April and I will probably have lunch after I'm done at the doctor.

bluecuracao 03-29-2007 01:09 PM

Crabcake on an onion roll, mashed sweet potatoes with raisins and more onion, and a large coffee with soy milk.

BigV 03-29-2007 02:03 PM

corn chowder, reese's pieces, coffee

later.... more coffee, brownie, beef cup o ramen.

jinx 03-29-2007 05:21 PM

White tuna (butterfish) roll, tiger roll, miso

Sundae 03-30-2007 08:52 AM

When I was walking through the market at lunch today I walked into a pungent waft of garlic. I'm not sure where it came from, but it got into my head that I just had to have chicken kiev for lunch.

Now this used to be a staple of every pub menu as far as I remember, but I ended up wandering halfway across town without finding any.

In the end I compromised - in the last pub before work I had a pint of Diet Pepsi, gammon & pineapple with chips and peas and a grilled tomato (which I didn't eat - bleurgh). Oh and a portion of garlic bread on the side.

Have promised myself as soon as I stop working here I will go back to eating healthily - I've just got a real end of term feeling at the moment.
