April 13, 2009: Osprey Egg

This pair of ospreys have been together for 20 years, this is their 53rd egg. Ospreys are an endagered species. Apparently he had an affair with a young floozie at one point, but she dealt with it in no uncertain terms.

I added a picture that could be seen in the blog view but can't remove the picture Monster attached. Need some help UT.

Anyway, that certainly looks like an easter egg. I didn't know Ospreys laid multicolored eggs. I wonder if they all do or it depends on their diet or age?

53 eggs and they're endangered???! What is that the only one left?

We need to wait till the egg hatches before we eat her.

And Bruce: The reason the egg looks that way is... well... it's EASTER!

Done sir. For reference, it's Edit, Go Advanced, Manage Attachments, Remove, Close Window, Save.

That's OK, not you're fault, it's the way the system works for everyone.

I really liked the pattered egg, the facial expression of the mom, and the longevity of this couple, but most of all I was amused by the passion and indignation with which one of the birders talked about the male's "affair"!

53 eggs in 20 years: just by way of comparison, it is usual for a chicken of an egg-laying breed to lay more than 300 eggs in her first year of egg laying after she reaches maturity at six months or so. On the other hand, the lifespan of a chicken is generally between five and ten years.

xoxoxoBruce 04-14-2009 10:36 AM

But that chicken isn't flying 6000 miles between eggs, or hatching them and raising the chicks. ;)
