A crest isn't caused by something pushing it up, it is caused by two layers of water moving in opposite directions - the top layer crests. That is almost guaranteed on a shore, somewhat likely in shallow water, and less likely in deep water. But in deep water, when it happens, it can be BIG.

I am just not getting this need to remake perfectly good movies, especially when there was already a crappy made-for-TV remake of this within the last year.
