April 26, 2008: Unusual Sky

Quote:

This highly unusual cloud formation was likely formed from the exhaust of a rocket launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Southern California roughly an hour before this capture

I'd rather not think about the chemicals that may have contributed to this, but it sure are purty.

Ice, most likely.

Very beautiful. I remember seeing similar vistas when I lived in California.

Shawnee123 04-25-2008 11:33 AM

Wow. That kind of looks like that milk trick.

Beautiful. During the day I'd call the rainbow portion a sundog, but I don't think they occur at night.
Wait a minute - what milk truck?

Shawnee123 04-25-2008 01:46 PM

Not truck, trick! From here.

No, Sweet really did mean truck - it was a wi-fi connection and unfortunately the truck was in the way. Bye-bye Sweet :greenface

Sarasvati48 04-25-2008 02:11 PM

Actually, it is like a sun dog. The rocket contrail is so high it picked up the setting sunlight around the curve of the earth. Notice that it looks like it is just after sunset...

sweetwater 04-25-2008 02:12 PM

 I'm really getting off on the wrong track with the trick truck thing here, aren't I? Do'h!

Shawnee123 04-25-2008 02:15 PM

Don't wind up in the trunk on your truck trek to track tick tricks.

They do occur at night, and they're called paraselenes, including moondogs.
