What the Hell Are They?

I was on the New Jersey Turnpike yesterday.

I usually try to avoid this, but circumstances were beyond my control.

Anyway ... sometimes on the center concrete median, you see these things.

Kind of like Blair Witch Effigies that seem to be made of wood slats, or perhaps metal. They all look the same. They do not vary. They are not regularly spaced. You might see one in a five mile stretch, then see 3 of them within a mile ... They do not hold up signs, they are not festooned with reflectors, they don't seem to be hooked up to anything, like they aren't camera mounts, or solar cell arrays, or even simple milemarkers. There are, in fact, simple milemarkers on the concrete median that have no apparent relationship to the things. If they were in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, I might (not likely, only might) be convinced that there was some Pennsylvania Dutch/Pow-Wow Medicine significance to them.

I asked one of my doctors, who is a New Jersey resident about them. He was been wondering about them for years.

A picture would be nice.

1. I didn't have my camera.
2. At 70 mph, it's tough to get a good picture of anything, especially while driving.
3. I tried googling, but I have no idea what they are and what they are called, so I couldn't find any.

If you've been on the NJT, you know the thingies I mean.

Yeah, well, I avoid the New Jersey Turnpike. I only drive small portions of it, and haven't seen these things. I'm curious. But I don't often take pictures while driving either.

next time, take the train.

I think they can be used to hold signs, but aren't most of the time. I have no idea about their placement.

I think you're right. For hanging signs for work...when they're working. :)

I avoid the New Jersey Turn Pike like the plague.

Elspode 09-16-2005 12:31 PM

Probably fairly simple to do so from Colorado, Mari...

marichiko 09-16-2005 01:41 PM

Oh, you have no idea what a struggle it is not to find myself drifting east on I-70, driving mesmerized thru Kansas, finding my self getting on the exit for the Pennsylvania Turn Pike, and suddenly I'm in downtown Newark! Hey! Do you suppose it has something to do with those poles? :tinfoil:
