Dec 3, 2009: Fluorescent Fighting Fun

Take a lesson from this, kids. Never buy those cheap imported light-sabers.:headshake

You have to hand it to the Japanese, they know violence sells and they market it like no other country can.
But this has to be the dumbest sport in history, two fat guys pounding each other with neon-rods until they’re both soaked in blood? I have no idea what this sport is called or who came up with the idea, but apparently it’s very popular in the Land of the Rising Sun, despite it’s obvious stupidity. I’d rather watch some K1 or UFC any day, this is just like wrestling only with real blood.
I wonder if those lamps are mercury free…if they’re not, do the fat guys know they could die from mercury poisoning?
Uh, they're not neon, they're fluorescent tubes, but other than that he's got a point. ;)

Mr Yamaguchi: Tanaka-san, ratings are down. People are tired of watching Galactic Horrible Torture Dragon Show. Even Noble Misery Samurai Ouch! Ouch! is failing. You must think of new program.

Tanaka:

Bread and circus. Bread and circus.

For what it's worth, both neon and fluorescent are cold cathode; the concept is very, very similar. A large diameter, phosphor coated white tube of neon is, in underlying science, very, very similar to a fluorescent tube.

I wouldn't like to fight anyone with either.

But if I had to, it'd be all about breaking the tip off and then stabbing with what remains.

Neon tubes I've seen, are a lot thicker glass. Hurtfully thick.:mg:

Didn't tw say that flo tubes had mercury in them?

SPUCK 12-03-2009 06:08 AM

These tubes have phosphorous in them. If you get phosphorous in a cut.. It takes a LOOOOoooOOoOOoOOoOOOng time to heal if it ever does.

I think those tubes are filled with Stupid Gas.

TG it's not Friday, I'm not seeing a viable recipe in this one

You light up my life.

Fifteen years ago, I knelt down behind my tv. I put my fist on the floor to steady myself. When I did, I put my fist into a pile of left over glass from a broken candle sconce. I still occasionally pull out a piece of that glass outta my knuckles.

How long will these dumbasses be pulling glass outta their various body parts?:headshake

A haiku in honor of Japan's newest sport:

Clouds of phosphor and
Tiny glass bits by my face.
No safety goggles?

dmg1969 12-04-2009 12:32 PM

Whose "bright" idea was this?

Adak 12-04-2009 12:51 PM

Breathing very heavily around all that very fine phosphor dust may be worse than the glass shards, in later years.

My worst experience with glass was after I broke out the smoked rear window of my pickup truck.

Safety glass just means the shards created are very small, and grey in this case.

After cleaning up the considerable mess and practicing up on my 4 letter words, I'm trying to remove some shards from my fingertips.

Digging around with a magnifying glass, needle and tweezers, I start seeing these small thin grey things, and start pulling them out.

Crap&@&$%$! but that hurts?!

Did you know that the nerves in your fingertips look just like very small thin shards of smoked glass?:eek::eek:

Nice haiku action, new!
Some back atcha

Too many children
Means a high-risk, high-pay job;
Eating broken glass.

This only reminded me of my stupid Congressman, Ted Poe who likes to hear himself speak in the House of Representatives. Here he is waxing poetic on the evils of compact fluorescent light bulbs, which I know are not what this thread was all about! He also often gets before the House and speaks about the heroes of the Republic of Texas! :headshake
