November 15, 2008: Sea Lion Artists

Bored with critters that just sit around looking cute? Turns out critters get bored, just sitting around looking cute.
To pass the time, and relieve the boredom, these two Sea lions took up painting.

Staff at the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park in Devon say the sea lions produce different types of paintings depending on their mood.
Sea lion curator Nikki Morrison said the park hit on the idea as a way of keeping the animals mentally stimulated in captivity.
Nikki said: 'The painting was one of the ideas we tried out to see if they would like it and the sea lions seem to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
'Depending on their mood, it can get them really excited, and you can see them perk up when they have a brush in their mouths.
'It can be very calming for them. If they seem a little stressed or having an off-day, as we all do sometimes, it seems to really relax them and help them focus.

Would have been more productive to get them to paint the park, but I suppose they can sell the paintings, and hire somebody to do that.
I've seen elephants and monkeys painting, but I don't remember any others.

Yeah, sea... instead of just lion around, they did something productive and pretty-fied blank canvases. :)

I think he is trying to paint what the aftermath of his last penguin meal looked like....

http://turtlekiss.com/ Koopa the turtle paints, too. I don't know how I came across Koopa but it was years ago. Maybe he's the sea lions inspiration.

Crazy artistic animals...I think they are more creative than I.

Thanks for the link, SquidGirl. Unfortunately, Koopa has retired.

While Koopa's eating supper at 4 pm in Miami Beach, Koopa's pet, Ms Varszegi, is amusing herself by painting her breasts and pressing them to canvas. The results (below) are cool.

She's done over 100 of them here. The link is entirely safe for work... unfortunately.

Don't color outside the lions!

Gowd, that bleach job is horrid!

I was all set to be a hater... but it's pretty good folk art, when you think about it. Also her work has gotten much more complicated. When you look back at like #23, it's obvious she's just put paint on her rack and mashed it onto the canvas, but now she's studied it all and come up with something much more interesting. I think if I were a professional with a professional office I would buy one of these and put it in the lobby.

I agree, the early ones looked like boobies pogo with different colors, but then she got creative and came up with patterns I can't figure out just how she did them.

I think she used the same "mashing" technique, but rather than coloring the nipple exclusively with a different color, I think she drew vertical lines with the different color. They do inspire me to 1) follow UT and if I had a professional office buy one and put it in the lobby 2) slather paint on my own breasts and see what kind of art I can make. When I came across her work a while ago I saw a collage she did with credit card clippings. It was pretty amazing!

I have several elephant paintings in my place. they can paint the most amazing things. I have a painting of an elephant painted by an elephant. He even put blonde hair on my head. I have the most beautiful paintings. They are my most treasured items.

Nipple tassles dipped in paint. Then to get them moving. - Probably not, but I like the idea :)
