Who else does crosswords?

What do you like? Straight or cryptic? American Grid or British?

Lamplighter 11-02-2012 07:11 AM

Not so much.
My wife and I try to avoid crosswords, both American and British.

Mr Limey compiles cryptic crosswords.

I LOVE cryptic crosswords. I keep a few in my meeting folder for those few minutes before everything starts. I find myself going over some answers many times and I'll have a EUREKA moment...so I have 6 or 7 started right now.

Being a primarily British product, I do have trouble with a lot of the cryptics due to cultural references.

But they're SO fun. You can think for a long time on one clue structure, work it around in your mind, write down the letters and try moving them around, write down other words and see if they can fit the clue. That doesn't work? Try some of the other tricky conventions employed in cryptics.

So much better than: a furry domesticated animal that purrs. 3 letters. Um...er...hmmm, an 'a' in the middle. So, not dog...OH OH OH CAT!!!!!!!

I'm addicted to trying to beat the computer at Scrabble. Crosswords? Not so much.
