Meet the newest member of our family, Slizzy

Or Ruby, depending on SonofV's mood at the moment. He is a (he I think...) corn snake. Amelanistic corn snake, to be precise. That means no black in his pigmentation.

He came to us by way of our local PetCo, along with the whole rig, tank, bowl, litter, heater, lid, landscaping, and a Pinkie! How SonofV convinced MrsV to get a snake remains something of a mystery to me...but he's (SonofV) waaaay cuter than I am, and thus has different advantages.

Enjoy the pictures!

Having won the wrestling match with Picassa, Hello, and Blogspot, I now have the pleasure of introducing our newest family member:

I wanted to call him Upsilon but I though I'd get tired of having to explain why...

Sun_Sparkz 09-27-2005 07:20 PM

i hope you enjoy him :)

Sun_Sparkz 09-27-2005 07:21 PM

BigV 09-27-2005 07:26 PM

bluecuracao 09-27-2005 07:34 PM

Hmm, I can't see the snakey pics, just those pesky red x boxes. :(

Not exactly a hijack, but am still getting aquainted with Blogger. Here's my blog, and the most recent posts to it of Slizzy's meal. It's a nice sequence of pictures, and the process of taking the pictures, using Picassa to manage the pics, Hello to post to Blogger has left me a little exhausted. I think it turned out nice. Check them out and feel free to comment, here or on the blog.

Speaking of which... As I posted this sequence of pictures, it took me less than a quarter hour during which I accumulated several comments. Excited at the activity my pictures were generating, I checked out the comments. Too bad. Turns out they were all spam. :( Work from home, etc, etc.

Question: for those bloggers in the audience, how to you keep the crap out?

Tonchi 09-28-2005 12:51 AM

You need to have Wolf bless him for you. Just curious, howcome he didn't get named Slytherin?

wolf 09-28-2005 12:57 AM

I thought the marking on his head looked like a Lambda ... (cuz mostly you'll be looking down on his head with his tail pointed towards you)

Here's hoping that SonOfV has an excellent and enjoyable time learning with and about Slizzy!

And I hope that MrsV doesn't freak out too much the first time he escapes from his enclosure.

SonofV picked the name. All I do is write the checks. And pick out the poo.

I thought lambda too, but it's more symetrical, and I usually try to face him, but he could really care less.

Thanks! I had snakes when I was his age, a five foot boa constrictor named Hercules and a 6-7 foot anaconda that gave birth to 40 babies, one of which had two heads! I got pulled out of class that day, I'll always remember that fondly.

I am firmly in denial about this scenario, but I'm sure the cats are biding their time.

Lower case lambda. Not a big Lamda.

Sun_Sparkz 09-28-2005 01:59 AM

wow 40 babies?! you woulda made a fortune! (if you were selling them)

So how big will Slizzy grow? How big is his tank? He looks to small to eat mice... what are you feeding him? fly's and stuff?

Your snake is GAY? :smack: Well, at least you won't have to worry about any unexpected babies.

You set your blogger commenting tool to only those users who are registered with blogger.

BigV 09-28-2005 07:42 PM

THANK YOU!!

Edit:

Grrrrrr.... thanks for the really good tip. Unfortunately, the crap spam I did get and didn't like got through with that setting already in place. The only tighter notch on the belt is "Members of this blog". I don't think I want to go there just yet. I don't need another population of users to keep track of. I guess I'll just manually delete the crap out of there. Are there any other tips in this vein? Do I have to manually groom each post for bs comments?

BigV 09-28-2005 07:46 PM

mrnoodle:

Is that your snake? She's beautiful.

wolf 09-29-2005 12:25 AM

Was "Pinky" an underdone mouse, or did you happen to have some spare gerbil babies in the other room?

Slizzy's a darling! I also checked out your blog...mmm...appetizing, yes? heh-heh. By the way, is Pinky a mouse? :thepain:

BigV 09-29-2005 10:13 AM

wolf, lheene, the pinkie was a baby mouse. They're standard fare in the frozen section of the pet food aisle. Each one is $1.29, but considerably less in bulk, I understand. We heat some water, then with the pinkie in the plastic bag from the store, we immerse it into the water to thaw then warm the mouse. This is known as f/t feeding, frozen/thawed feeding. Eventually, he'll graduate to f/t hoppers, baby furry mice, then to f/t adults.

When I was young, we fed live rodents to our snakes. That is not considered a good idea any more. There is some risk to the reptile of being bitten, and with the kind of training from a hatchling to take f/t food, that risk is now zero. Of course it is much easier to just order up a bag of 25 or 50 mice than it is to keep a colony of feed animals in the house.

Clodfobble 09-29-2005 10:11 PM

I started feeding my ball python only thawed dead rats after one bit him on the nose... but then after about a year of it, he just stopped eating them. He wouldn't eat again until I put a live one in there. I still try to get him smaller ones than he can necessarily handle to give him an advantage.
