Wonen's Sufrage

Here is a quick quiz for you.

What federal state in Europe did not give its women the right to vote until 1971?

This is not a soviet country either...this is one of the worlds oldest republics.

Perry Winkle 09-05-2005 05:06 PM

switzerland

Griff 09-05-2005 05:09 PM

I was thinking things had been going well for the Swiss! *duck and cover*

Doesn't shock me. Its why my Swiss Mom renounced her Swiss citizenship in favor of the US. She was absolutely enraged that her native country was so conservative. While I tend to be a fan of the Swiss (naturally ;) ), that aspect of Switzerland has always been incomprehensible to me.

Radar 09-05-2005 06:16 PM

Perhaps this is why Switzerland is peaceful, neutral, non-interventionist, and logical. Maybe having men in charge kept them out of wars. ;)

lumberjim 09-05-2005 09:32 PM

aw, if you could have just kept a straight face, we might have had quite the stir, radar. I don't think the ladies would have put it past you to mean that.

It is a shame that by the time they got the right to vote, their vote had become as meaningless as it is. but, to be fair they DO have all of the boobies. and swiss boobies at that. i don't know that they really needed the vote to get their way, do you?

Perry Winkle 09-05-2005 10:43 PM

mmmmm, swiss miss boobies   :coffee:

I was thinking it with a straight face before I read this post. Is that enough to stir your sh*t, lj?

SmartAZ 09-23-2005 08:35 AM

You might give some thought to why women were not given the vote at first, and why the country got along so well for almost a century and a half with only the men in charge.

There are several important reasons why women should not be allowed to vote. One is that the primary purpose of government is (or better be) defense. Defense is a masculine responsibility. Men kill things, and sometimes they get killed, defending their homes. Women prefer to avoid killing things. For that reason alone, women and men vote for very different leaders. Another reason is that women are inherently of a different political mindset from men. A man has a family, but a woman is a family. A family is inherently socialist. Each member contributes according to ability and each recieves according to need and it's all administered by a loving mother and supported by a loving father. (At least that's the way it's supposed to be.) A man lives in a totally opposite world where each works to meet his needs and is paid according to his merit.

What we are seeing in the USA is an assault on the family. It began even before the revolution, with public education, which was made compulsory at the insistence of manufacturers about 150 years ago. The manufacturers specifically demanded schools modeled on the Prussian schools, which were modeled on the Indian buddhist schools, which were modeled on Greek and Latin schools for slaves! Yes, the public school system was developed specifically to turn out docile obedient workers! But the Prussians, buddhists, Greeks, and Romans didn't send upper class children to schools, they were educated by parents and tutors at home, and boys and girls were kept separated until they were old enough to attend formal social events. That resulted in boys learning the skills to be empire builders while girls learned the skills to manage homes and families. Throwing the girls and boys together leads to boys never learning how to act like men and girls thinking they can and should somehow be equal to boys.

I don't suggest that one way is right and another wrong. I do suggest that the USA was a great country in the 19th century and was not a great country in the 20th century.

Undertoad 09-23-2005 09:00 AM

It sure was a better world when we were 50% agricultural, had a life span of about 45 years, were not in any sense a global power (almost lost to those stinky Mexicans! Had our white house burned down by frikking Canadians!), and best of all, men were allowed to smack women around to keep them in line.

Boy the good old days, eh? When you could be an sexist, racist, violent asshole and it was legal and acceptable. Must be hard for a tough guy like you nowadays!

But not so tough that you can't spend a little time whining and complaining and blaming everyone else for how things are.

AFAIC, he was doing very well up until the last few lines of the third paragraph.

jinx 09-23-2005 11:03 AM

Hmm, I don't really get why smartaz is being labeled a troll or an idiot here. Why is his/her post any more misogynist than the recent posts by enlightened western men suggesting that women should have c-sections or surgery so they remain desirable or "good in bed"?

dar512 09-23-2005 11:08 AM

Strong stance + leaning far in one direction + newbee = troll.

Generally.

Time will tell.

wolf 09-23-2005 11:28 AM

If he's a troll, he's a well-read one.

I don't think he's a troll, though.

xoxoxoBruce 09-23-2005 08:11 PM

I'm with Wolf. Not attacking anyone or their opinion. Just posting his (?) view and giving the reasons why he holds them....a hundred years after they went out of style.
Of course a lot of things I believe in have gone out of style, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.....just out of style. :p

edit- Now here's a troll.

I made the post because it is true!!! It is not a suggestion, it happens all the time in Brazil - mostly because the women want to "stay good" in bed.

I do not remember anyone saying that women should have C-sections for this reason...

How do you know I am a "enlightened western man?"

SmartAZ 09-24-2005 07:13 AM

So I'm a moron because you don't happen to agree with me?

So you think it's important to be "up to date" even if the country is falling apart because the current fads don't work right?

I'm disappointed. I thought this crowd could do better than that. How did you folks learn to spell so well without learning how to defend your positions?

Griff 09-24-2005 07:34 AM

Smartaz you're obviously not a moron, if you wish to continue the arguement ignore the barb and follow up. Sometimes when you're new folks prefer to just smack. UT's points deserve to be addressed and I'll have to do it if you don't but I've got goat housing to improve.

SmartAZ 09-24-2005 07:48 AM

Yeah, well, I've gotta wash my socks. I'm not sure yet how long I'll hang around here. I was hoping for better discussions. I mean without the insults.

Trilby 09-24-2005 10:52 PM

I say, Professor SmartAz!

Why can't a woman be more like a man?
Men are so honest, so thoroughly square;
Eternally noble, historically fair.
Who, when you win will always give your back a pat.
Why can't a woman be like that?

Why does every one do what the others do?
Can't a woman learn to use her head?
Why do they do everything their mothers do?
Why don't they grow up, well, like their father instead?

Why can't a woman take after a man?
Men are so pleasant, so easy to please.
Whenever you're with them, you're always at ease.

Would you be slighted if I didn't speak for hours?

COLONEL PICKERING:
Of course not!

PROFESSOR HIGGINS:
Would you be livid if I had a drink or two?

COLONEL PICKERING:
Nonsense!

PROFESSOR HIGGINS:
Would you be wounded if I never sent you flowers?

COLONEL PICKERING:
Never!

PROFESSOR HIGGINS:
Well, why can't a woman be like you?

One man in a million may shout a bit.
Now and then, there's one with slight defects.
One perhaps whose truthfulness you doubt a bit.
But by and large we are a marvelous sex!

Why can't a woman take after a man?
'Cause men are so friendly, good natured and kind.
A better companion you never will find.

If I were hours late for dinner would you bellow?

COLONEL PICKERING:
Of course not.

PROFESSOR HIGGINS:
If I forgot your silly birthday would you fuss?

COLONEL PICKERING:
Nonsense.

PROFESSOR HIGGINS:
Would you complain if I took out another fellow?

COLONEL PICKERING:
Never.

PROFESSOR HIGGINS:
Why can't a woman be like us?

Why can't a woman be more like a man?
Men are so decent, such regular chaps;
Ready to help you through any mishaps;
Ready to buck you up whenever you're glum.
Why can't a woman be a chum?

Why is thinking something women never do?
And why is logic never even tried?
Straightening up their hair is all they ever do.
Why don't they straighten up the mess that's inside?

Why can't a woman behave like a man?
If I was a woman who'd been to a ball,
Been hailed as a Princess by one and by all;
Would I start weeping like a bathtub overflowing,
Or carry on as if my home were in a tree?
Would I run off and never tell me where I'm going?
Why can't a woman be like me?

Tonchi 09-25-2005 04:11 PM

Well, just for the sake of argument, I think SmartAZ is correct. He has given all the reasons why we are in such disarray in America today - namely that women have adapted to the new social environment and are pushing ahead after taking over more than 50% of the workforce since the 1960's while men/boys are still in shock that it could happen/be allowed to happen, have NEVER recovered from the shock of seeing a female presence standing beside them instead of behind, and have been severely crippled in their job and familiar relations but prefer to whine and be hostile and resentful instead of growing and adapting for themselves ;)

Yes, to follow up on Tonchi's line of thought:

It is a great tragedy of the 21st century that women have been placed in a position where they must stoop to consider themselves equal to the weaker sex - the male one.

Men are poor creatures handicapped from birth with XY chromosome configuration. As any biologist will tell you, the majority of the Y chromosome is null and void. The X chromosome is rich in genetic information. Men are poor creatures, half what a woman with her XX chromosome is.

An embryo with an YY chromosome make-up is not viable, for example.

Another example of this can be seen in sex linked recessive genetic conditions such as hemophilia. Hemophiliacs are almost exclusively male, thanks to the configuration of their XY chromosomes. The blood-clotting factor is carried on the X chromosome. Having two X chromosomes is a good insurance against being born with a sex linked recessive condition.

Populations of salamanders can and do dispense with the male sex completely during times of low food supplies, over-crowding or other ecological stresses. Offspring are produced through the process of parthenogenesis. When times become better, the luxury of the inferior male salamander is something that the group can afford and males will once again begin to appear in the population.

Therefore, why should men be given the right to vote? Here today and gone tomorrow. This does not make for responsible decisions at the polls.

I rest my case. :p

Trilby 09-26-2005 08:11 PM

I liked my song. It's from MY FAIR LADY. Wasn't it appropriate? :D

Tonchi 09-29-2005 03:32 AM

I really like salamanders too.

The gift of friendship is not limited to either of the sexes. I just discovered that I may come into a Swiss inheritance! And salamanders have always been a personal fav!

wolf 09-30-2005 12:11 AM

I take it that you got an email from a long lost relative whose recently deceased father was highly placed in the Swiss Government, and all you need to do is to provide access information for your bank account so the money can be transferred to you ...

marichiko 09-30-2005 12:46 AM

Well, see, everyone here needs to send me a check because I have to pay $10,000 in processing fess for my 5 million francs to be transfered. Please feel free to PM me and I guarantee that I will return double whatever amount you send! :D

Actually, its a longshot, but it MIGHT just happen. My Mom is Swiss and has two sisters back in Switzerland. Neither of them have children. My Mom's twin sister took over the family home they all grew up in, a huge 3 story house built in the 1500's - it has a nice piece of land that goes with it. By Swiss laws of inheritance, as the only living direct decendent, I should be entitled to all or part of the value of that house (5 million Swiss francs). I have written my Aunt in Switzerland back last March and never got a a reply. I have no idea what happened to her. She may be ill or she may have passed on.

My last name is an extremely common one, so if my aunt HAS passed on and didn't have my most recent address in her paperwork (which she didn't), I would be extremely difficult to locate. I have written the government offices of the Kanton (a Kanton is like one of our states) of the town where my aunt resides inquiring what has happened to her. If she HAS passed on, I am the sole remaining person who is a direct relative. Its certainly fun to daydream about (NOT my aunt's death, of course), and you never know...

Tonchi 09-30-2005 01:45 AM

OK, now, I know we are twins separated at birth but this is too much of a coincidence :mg: MY momster's relatives in Switzerland live in a huge 3-story house built in the 1500's. If you tell me that your momster is related to the Auers (known for chocolate and wines) that is just TOOOOO much!

Tonchi, what Kanton does your family reside in?

Fleur 09-30-2005 10:30 AM

Please, women are only equitable in the market place until they have kids. Then things have a way of getting re-prioritized in a way that has women's hands tied behind the apron strings...kiddy kennels are not the answer.

All of them are smilies. That one is a smiley that is sticking out his tongue. Others paraded around with signs. Some have guns. Several leak/puke/fart etc. Still smiley. Well, Brianna, let's start right here. Maybe I really am "histrionic" about my spelling. After all, a woman with my education ought to be able to spell "lose" or "philanthropist." It bugs the hell out of me to find myself staring at some common word and not knowing if I spelled it correctly or not. Mea Culpa.

As far as being concerned over the plight of the homeless and disenfranchised - yes, I am. I haven't posted about it that much since I've been back on The Cellar except for my essay on Clarity Rose a while ago, so I am rather puzzled as to why you would snipe at me about that. I have no idea how that Swiss thing will work out. Frankly, I'll believe it if I ever see it, and if I do see it, you can bet I'd keep much of it for myself. I would also give a chunk away to help in whatever way seemed most appropriate.

You write that you hope to one day teach literature. I think that's a wonderful goal. Books can and have helped to change the outlook of entire societies. If I wanted to understand you, what book would be the one that you feel the greatest affinity for? What author's words most closely mirror the one's of your own soul?

I'll go first. The poet, Mary Oliver, New and Selected Poems:

Roses, Late Summer

What happens
to the leaves after
they turn red and golden and fall
away? What happens

to the singing birds
when they can't sing
any longer? What happens
to their quick wings?

Do you think there is any
personal heaven
for any us?
Do you think anyone,

the other side of that darkness,
will call to us, meaning us?
Beyond the trees
the foxes keep teaching their children

to live in the valley.
So they never seem to vanish, they are always there
in the blossom of light
that stands up every morning

in the dark sky.
And over one more set of hills,
along the sea,
the last roses have opened their factories of sweetness

and are giving it back to the world.
If I had another life
I would want to spend it all on some
unstinting happiness.

I would be a fox or a tree
full of waving branches.
I wouldn't mind being a rose
in a field full of roses.

Fear has not occurred to them, nor ambition.
Reason they have not yet thought of.
Neither do they ask how long they must be roses, and then what.
Or any other foolish question.

Brianna?
