Lowes and Whirlpool

I would like to thank Lowes and Whirlpool for my new air conditioner. Maybe next time I'll kiss your ass for being so thankful for letting me shop there. The first one I drove 40 miles round trip to pick up and when I got home and opened the box, it looked like someone had been in it with an eight pound hammer. Then to get an exchange I have to show my credit card about 5 times, while they credit my account. Then sell me another ac.

Aw it's getting cooler now, but I might have to apply for a zoning change for the flapping noise. Folks next door, maybe 1/2 mile might bitch. To heavy industrial because of the damn noise it makes on low. For almost 500 bucks I get this crap?

footfootfoot 06-27-2005 10:44 PM

Don't get any of us started...

At least you are cooler, but I, ahem, feel your pain.

Ouch.

busterb 06-27-2005 11:28 PM

I've worked on offshore drilling rigs where the noise level was better. BTW I have 2 hearing aids in the kitchen, maybe I need to move them out of town?

You live in Mississippi, go to freakin' WalMart. Lowes? When you're melting into a grease spot it's no time to get fancy.

tw 06-28-2005 07:54 AM

Its called Consumer Reports or www.consumerreports.org. The July 2005 issue is a latest rating of air conditioners. For larger models, Whirlpool ranks lowest. One model is actually noisier than Whirlpool: Maytag. Listed are so many better brands in the 10,000 BTU category. Why Whirlpool?

busterb 06-28-2005 09:39 AM

Why Whirlpool? Because it was the only 24-k unit within 75 miles that would take my visa card. Also was a Sunday, which became moot cause I had to return the sob on Monday. Also the best fit w/out a major install. Sams had a 38-k, I think. But was something like 40" wide. They don't take visa and would have pushed the limits of my woodworking skills. Haven't checked your link, but I'm guessing you have to be a subscriber to use it. I could have gone to library on Monday and looked at their copy, but I was having roofing work done as same time and power was off for day. I wanted to be sure power was restored by quiting time for my freezer.
So bottom line! I went at this like a damn goat, butting a barn.

Elspode 06-28-2005 11:29 AM

Sam's doesn't take VISA? They do here...

xoxoxoBruce 06-28-2005 11:36 AM

Here, even the whore houses take Visa. :)

BigV 06-28-2005 11:37 AM

Yeah, but after you swipe the card you never want to use it again.

:vomit:

Sam's only takes Discover Card for credit cards. I believe that they do accept Visa and MasterCard Debit cards. But if you need to use credit, it's Discover or nothing.

busterb 06-28-2005 05:02 PM

Thanks for the shot in arm about Sams. BTW, you can pay your Sams bill w/visa. Just can't charge a damn thing.

Are you saying 24,000 BTUs? That's a rather large unit - larger than I was discussing.

busterb 06-28-2005 05:14 PM

I guess it's over kill TW, but better than too small. Young lady at library is going to get the scoop for me tomorrow. They get consumer report. So I might take this noise maker back.

Elspode 06-28-2005 07:15 PM

I had no idea that Sam's actually made a distinction between credit and debit on the card issue...but then I try not to use credit cards unless I have no other choice. The VISA I've been using is almost always used as a debit.

I was there yesterday and took the cash with me to the bathroom while my husband checked out... they made him wait til i came back with the money to pay - they wouldn't let him use the visa. Such a pain, but Discover doesn't charge Sam's Club a fee.

Are you saying 24,000 BTUs? That's a rather large unit - larger than I was discussing.

My friends , when it gets hot down here 24k btu ain't to big , hell 1,000k btu wouldn't be to big , my mom had this crysler ( i shit you not !!) 220 vac air conditioner , I don't have ANY idea of the btu's but that bad boy would cool an entire 2000 sq foot house in NO TIME FLAT !!! I swear it would cause frost on you after a shower !!!!!!!!

russotto 06-29-2005 01:28 PM

24,000 BTUs = 2 tons. That's what I've got cooling my entire 2100 square foot townhouse. A split unit, not a through-the-window/wall.

Granted it's completely inadequate and I'm putting in a 3 ton, but still, that's pretty darned big for a window unit. No surprise it's noisy. Maybe a split unit would be a better choice... but then, that'll run you in the thousands, with ductwork, etc.

wolf 06-29-2005 01:32 PM

The 24K BTU window unit I have in my office (it actually sits in a specially constructed box that was made for the glassblock windows) was listed as being "Library Quiet" ... which it became only after a LOT of shimming. The units have to be very well secured in the window in order not to vibrate in a loud and annoying way. It might be your windowframe vibrating rather than the unit itself causing the additional noise.

busterb 06-29-2005 09:10 PM

This is the fan running. On low. Going to regroup tomorrow. Maybe drop back to a 18,000 btu, and have them plugin before I buy.

Our ***Ing Experience with Lowe's (long)

This is my wife's letter to Lowes detailing our experience with the storm door which was ordered 70 days ago and is still not installed. For public posting I have changed the names to initials to protect the guilty. I sent it as feedback on one of their site forms on Monday and still haven't heard back.

Quote:

On April 19,2005 I went to the Lowe's store located at 3100 Brandywine Parkway, Wilmington Delaware to purchase a Pella Rollscreen Storm Door to be installed by your installers. I was told before a door is ordered the store sends someone out to measure the door. MC came out to measure on April 26,2005. Since I had not heard from the store I went in on April 29,2005. My paperwork was still in the back. Sales representative KM called and my paperwork was brought out. The door I chose was the Pella Midview Hartford. She told me the door I chose needed to be ordered because my front door was larger than the standard size front door. I told her that was fine. I went over color with her three different times. I told her I wanted a brown door. MC called to let me know the door was delivered to the store on May 10, 2005 he told me he would probably have it installed until the following week. He made a point of telling me that LOWE'S GIVES HIM LARGE JOBS AND SINCE INSTALLING A STORM DOOR IS NOT A BIG JOB HE TRIES TO FIT THEM IN THEM EITHER FIRST THING IN THE MORNING OR LATE AFTERNOON IF HE GETS DONE EARLY THAT DAY. When I didn't hear from him I called him on May 20,2005. I wanted to be home when the door was being installed.I was gong to be out of town the following week and asked him to install the door the week of May 30,2005.

On June 10,2005 I called MC again because the door was still not installed. He told me it was going to be a couple more weeks. I told him I wanted it in by the end of the month. On Saturday June 25,2005 my husband called Lowe's and spoke with manager MT after speaking with MC he said the door would be installed Monday morning. On Monday June 27,2005 MC came to install ,but it was the wrong door. I called the store and spoke with KM. After looking at her records she insisted the door I ordered was white I told her I would never have ordered a white door ,because it doesn't match the siding of my house. She tried to talk me into taking the white door claiming I will get condensation in between the glass and the door if I get the dark one. I told her I ordered a brown door and want the brown door delivered. She said she would order the new door and give me a 10% discount on my next purchase. I asked her to take it off this purchase she told me she couldn't, because she had to pay for the new door. She asked me to come into the store and sign new paperwork.

When I got to the store I asked to speak with manager MT he was not in. I asked to speak to the manager that was in duty. DW was on duty I explained the situation to him showed him my paperwork and reciepts he told me I had the wrong paperwork. I told him this is what I was given I also told him I have the store register receipts, if I was supposed to receive other papers it's their responsbility to figure things out, a door was ordered and come in wrong. He kept insisting it was the right door ,but the wrong color and not the wrong door. I told him this was not the door I ordered I ordered a brown door not a white one so however you look at it, it's the wrong door for me. He told me he couldn't refund the "wrong" door until MC brought the door back to Lowe's which won't be until tomorrow then they will reorder the door. I asked DW if there was going to be a difference in price from the original order I was told it was a more expensive door, but he would give it to me at the price I paid for the other door. He also agreed to take the 10% off this purchase.

When we went back to the area in the store where the doors are located DW printed out a sheet for me to review. I told him I chose the Pella Midview Hartford Door not the Pella Midview Helena Door. KM told DW you can't get that size door in the Hartford you have to order the Helena . That was another unexpected surprise. DW asked her to write up the order as he requested giving me the original prices I was quoted plus the extra 10% off the Helena. She refused to do it she did't want to be responsible for that price quote. DW said he would take care of it. I will have to make another trip to the store to make sure all paperwork is finalized and correct.

I thought Lowe's had a better Customer Service Department than Home Depot. My experience has been anthing but pleasant. Both of these stores are of equal distance from my home. In the future I have no desire order anything from Lowe's that has to be delivered and installed. Your store representives are putting the blame of their mistakes on the customer. What ever happened to the customer is always right and service with a smile.
The door was returned yesterday. They told us the new door would take 'two weeks'. Since the last 'two weeks' turned into two months, we will see how this turns out.

busterb 07-02-2005 06:43 PM

I think maybe a guy had best start recording anything said by sales staff. I got an 18-k btu today and returned the 24-k to Lowes, in 3 parts and a paper sack. Surprise! only took around 10 minutes to get my money back. Anyway the 18-k is a Crosely and I can hear myself think.
BUt the sob don't slide out of case, so had screw around with their stupid frame and asanine instructions. The paper work that came w/it doesn't say Crosely on it. If a problem, please call customer eXperience center. WTF? No website.

plthijinx 07-02-2005 06:43 PM

in this heat i wouldn't care how noisy the thing is....just as long as it cools off the house!
