3/24/2005: Record Easter egg

http://cellar.org/2005/easteregg.jpg

The Belgian chocolate producer "Guylian" made this chocolate egg with at least 50,000 bars on behalf of the city of St. Niklaas.

The egg measured 8.32 metres high and beats the record of Kwazulu-Natal in South-Africa in 1996. That egg was 7.65 metres high.

Twenty-six craftsman worked altogether 525 hours to build the egg. They needed 1950 kg of chocolates.

Alderman Urbain Vercauteren of the city of St.Niklaas said the egg wasn't meant to be eaten.

He said: "After a week outside in all weather conditions, I don't think it would be very tasteful."

i'd like to see the bunny that laid that egg.

I was just thinking about this. And the absurdity of it. The waste. Then I realized how neat it was that rectangular bars were used to form the nice round shape. Then I realized that for some reason, that I can't explain, I would be more impressed if it was made of Legos. I mean, look at how tall it is! Imagine if that was all Legos. Instead, it's just chocolate that will be thrown away. What a waste.

I'm reminded of the previous LCO's (Large Chocolate Objects) featured here. The chocolate is probably cheap stuff that would taste bad anyway.

Actually it would have been really neat if the chocolate bars were left in their wrappers and then given away after, like that pile of bananas in London.

Griff 03-24-2005 03:06 PM

Not to worry, the rodents are eliminating waste every night...

Promenea 03-24-2005 05:01 PM

wonder it if will start melting in the sun?

Trilby 03-24-2005 05:33 PM

he doesn't think it will be "...very TASTEFUL"-??? Lost in translation...amigo.

Elspode 03-24-2005 08:42 PM

I suppose this is cheapass *hollow* world record giant Easter egg? I tell you, they just don't make stuff like they did when I was a kid....grumble, grumble, bitch, moan...

russotto 03-25-2005 10:41 AM

I'd like to test that theory on whether or not it is "tasteful". It does look like it's covered and I'd scrape the top layer off first. Yum, belgian chocolate.

Of course, it's possible and even likely that they used a crappy chocolate for this, picked for structural integrity rather than strength.

Wouldn't like to see it afterwards.

Contractor grade cocoa?

Given that it's made with Guylian's Chocolate, I'd say it's crappy, and picked for structural integrity.

Not all Belgian Chocolates are created equal.

Guylian is so low on the chocolate food chain that Wal-Mart doesn't carry it.

I've seen it (and bought it to be distributed at social functions, because it looks classy) at OddJob, which is (was, sorry, they're in the midst of a going out of business sale) what I call a "more than a Dollar Store," i.e., still really cheap, but sometimes of higher quality than you find in the average Dollar Store. I still have and use a very nice ceramic teapot I bought from there about 10 years ago.

(Oh dear. I think I'm getting overly parenthetical again. I'll need to have the meds checked.)

Hey, if anyone is interested, my local chipshop has decided to sell deep fried Easter Eggs. I tried to find the post about the deep fried Mars bars that got such a big response, but couldnt. If anyone wants pictures of this crime against healthy eating, tell me and i'll put a pic on the Aberdeen thread.

Griff 03-25-2005 04:11 PM

That I've got to see.

Is that something different from Scotch Eggs?

I love Scotch Eggs.

If they are just deep frying uncooked eggs, I'm thinking that would be rather like extra fast hard boiling, with an added element of danger, as the centers might expand and explode the shells ...

melidasaur 03-26-2005 05:17 PM

Maybe they are deep fried Cadbury Creme eggs....

They have Cadbury Creme egg McFlurries in the UK right now. I didn't try one, not a big fan of the Cadbury Creme egg.

xoxoxoBruce 03-26-2005 07:30 PM

What's a McFlurrie, some kind of milkshake clone?

busterb 03-26-2005 07:51 PM

I did the Scotch eggs for the last anvil shoot. Not bad for a redneck? They were great.

They do them on our side of the pond too. A McFlurrie is a McRipoff of a Dairy Queen Blizzard. (oh, the joys of the Chocolate Cappucino Blizzard, not available at all outlets ... but they do have 'em at Trooper. The night DQ reopens for business, I'll be sending the ambulance on an important mission).

I LOOOOOOOOOOVE  :yum: :heartpump Cadbury Creme Eggs!!!

I'd love them deep fried. Can't think of anything that wouldn't be improved by deep frying, 'cept for sea monster parts.

wolf 03-27-2005 12:57 PM

It does improve sea monster parts. I accidentally ate some fried squid one time, as it was in the "unrecognizable seafood" category. Once that shit cools down enough to be chewy, though ...

I did take the opportunity to trick my friend's kid into eating a heap of it though ...

Gods Bless Wedding Buffets and gullible children.

Me too, but only the originals. No one else I know can stand them. HA! More for ME!!

wolf 03-28-2005 10:53 AM

I think they are very cool. And the fact that they even thought to tint the center yellow excites me.

But I do prefer Dove Truffle Eggs.

Chocolate in chocolate is nearly always superior to creme in chocolate.
