Cellar field of 64

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/blank64.php

General idea: a "tournament" of "stuff"

Concept: we nominate 64 "teams" in a category. Then they are entered into the brackets, according to someone's seeding (we can refine that later). Each "game" is played as one of us deciding the winner, possibly listing a reason. The championship goes up to a vote of some sort.

Example: say the category is "breakfast cereals". We nominate them until we have 64. We seed them into the brackets. The top seeds are Cheerios, Raisin Bran, Corn Flakes, and in a seeding oddity, Capn Crunch. Cheerios, as a first seed, goes up against Kellogg's All-Bran as a 16th seed.

Then there is a first round of games. Either you go and visit the page, and your selection is made, or someone "operates" the game as a thread, and posts "Cheerios versus Kellogg's All Bran." Beestie, the next to visit the thread, posts "Cheerios" and then a single line of why: "The basic O, goes with anything. In fact I'm giving my O-face right now." Then I return and post "Frosted Flakes (2) vs Cookie Crisp (15)" and Russotto comes in and posts "Cookie Crisp" and "I don't eat either of them, but I'd rather have cookies than flakes."

The brackets are updated, then there is a second round and so forth.

I was thinking it would work better automated, but maybe someone has a better idea? Does any of this make sense?

richlevy 02-06-2005 01:10 PM

I'd like to see a Cellar awards. "Funniest", "Most Obnoxious", "Most Inflammatory", "Smartest", "Most Sensual", "Craziest", "Most Longwinded", etc.

We can call it "The Toadies".

lookout123 02-06-2005 01:35 PM

soundsinteresting. i like rich's ideas for contests.

Elspode 02-07-2005 12:01 PM

The local newspaper did something very similar awhile back. They did it with movies, books and recordings. It was kind of fun.

Undertoad 02-07-2005 01:53 PM

Let's try it then. This is going to be a little US-centric, but anyway... nominate breakfast cereals.

Cheerios
Frosted Flakes
Kellogg's All-Bran
Capn Crunch
Corn Flakes
Cookie Crisp
Raisin Bran
Raisin Nut Bran
Grape-Nuts

lookout123 02-07-2005 02:17 PM

do honey nut cheerios fall under the Cheerios umbrella?
and honeycombs

SteveDallas 02-07-2005 02:19 PM

The old Steve & Mike Show on WIP used to do this.. was always entertaining on a slow day.

I would have to nominate Cap'n Crunch Crunchberries (definitely not the same as the plain Cap'n Crunch).

Also Frosted Mini-Wheats, Rice Krispies, and Fruity Pebbles.

(I would move that any cereal containing marshmallow bits should be put to the torch rather than nominated, but I'm sure somebody will stand up to defend them.)

perth 02-07-2005 02:50 PM

Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Marshmallow Mateys (Generic brand, at least twice as many marshmallows as Lucky Charms)

elf 02-07-2005 03:09 PM

mmmmmm, dehydrated marshmallows. I used to eat up all the crunchy (boring) bits of cereal just as fast as I could, so that I could eat all the marshmallows at once. If I was juuuust gluttonous enough, they would still be a little Styrofoam-esque by then. :D

I'm gonna nominate Corn Pops and Fruity Pebbles since they're the only gluten-free ones I can ever find that don't cost astronomical amounts of money for a smaller-than-standard-sized box, and therefore are always in my house.

Trilby 02-07-2005 03:24 PM

Grapenuts
Quisp
Banana Nut Crunch

Katkeeper 02-07-2005 03:45 PM

Oatmeal, preferably slow cooked and made with steel cut oats. The Best!

Undertoad 02-07-2005 03:58 PM

SD, where do you think I got the ide--- I mean, I simply had no idea! :)

mrnoodle 02-07-2005 04:19 PM

Reese's Puffs (they taste better than you think they might)
Quaker 100% Natural

there also used to be this stuff called Almond Delight that I can't find anymore, but was dern good.

I would also like to nominate Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs. They're "crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and they don't have a single natural ingredient or essential vitamin to get in the way of that rich, fudgy taste." I miss C&H.

Clodfobble 02-07-2005 05:06 PM

Crispix and Kix!!

Happy Monkey 02-07-2005 05:10 PM

C3PO's!

404Error 02-07-2005 05:31 PM

Lucky Charms!

mmmmm....magically delicious!

Schrodinger's Cat 02-07-2005 09:31 PM

Silly Wabbits! TRIX!

(do they still make those?)

Beestie 02-07-2005 09:35 PM

Frosted MiniWheats are BOSS!

wolf 02-08-2005 01:34 AM

Alpha-Bits
Count Chocula
Sugar Pops (although I think they call them "Corn Pops" now to make them seem healthier)
Fruit Loops
Sugar Smacks (another renamed cereal, I believe. What are they now? Honey Smacks? Golden Smacks? Puffed Wheat coated in carmelized sugar)
Cocoa Puffs
Total
Wheaties. Oh how could we forget the joy of Wheaties!

Oh, for the days where you bought the cereal for the toy inside rather than the fiber content! I just got BOTH. Big boxes of Cheerios have Shark Tales video games in 'em!!!!!!! Don't have to save no boxtops. Good prizes in cereal and in Cracker Jacks are another reason to hate liability attorneys.

Nothing But Net 02-08-2005 01:37 AM

I'm with Clod, Crispix is what I eat.

OnyxCougar 02-08-2005 09:42 AM

Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds

warch 02-08-2005 10:17 AM

Rice Crispies
Rice Chex
Shreaded Wheat
Kashi (go lean)

Given how I think they might taste . . . . they would almost have to.

glatt 02-08-2005 10:39 AM

So is everyone just listing their favorites? Or is there some game we are supposed to be doing?

Wheaties rule.

Undertoad 02-08-2005 11:12 AM

Just keep nominating cereals, and everything will become clear in time!

Beestie 02-08-2005 11:18 AM

Apple Jacks

LabRat 02-08-2005 02:01 PM

rice krispie treat cereal (OMG yum)

I tend to eat the low sugar cereals like Cheerios and Rice Krispies, but I will also buy childhood faves like the (three remaining) monster cereals, Froot Loops, uh, um, Corn Pops, Honey Smacks, Rice Chex, Kix, Waffle-Os, Cap'n Crunch (all varieties), Lucky CHarms and others I forget right now. I'll post when I go food shopping again. I normally buy ten or twelve boxes at once.

Brian

xoxoxoBruce 02-08-2005 08:23 PM

Raisin Bran
Corn Chex
Grape Nuts
But none are as good as BACON :yum:

Roosta 02-09-2005 02:36 AM

I used to love Puffa puffa rice, but I don't think it's still out there.
Honey nut cornflakes.
Sugar puffs.

LabRat 02-09-2005 10:42 AM

Checked my cabinet last night, found a Honey Nut Chex i forgot to mention. Also excellent for snacking right out of the box. I've just seen Oh's in a regular size box, if that's what you meant SD. They are slightly bigger than a cheerio, and the hole is filled with some of crunchy stuff. Sweet grahamy type taste. I think there are a few flavors, but the original is my fav. We need to discuss cereals in the food thread...

Clodfobble 02-09-2005 12:31 PM

How many are we up to, UT? Surely we must be close to 64 by now...

Undertoad 02-09-2005 01:01 PM

People have a lot of duplicates, which is cool, we just need 4 more nominations.

lookout123 02-09-2005 01:04 PM

apple cinnamon cheerio's ( now extinct i think)

Katkeeper 02-09-2005 01:16 PM

Anyone old enough to remember Ralston? All Bran? Wheatena? And some people make grits and serve them with butter as a cereal. Should be 64...

Undertoad 02-09-2005 01:25 PM

Nominations are closed. Now wait a sec for the next step...

Undertoad 02-09-2005 02:59 PM

Now check out this link (pops new window):

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/cereal.php

Is that clear? Now, the next step is the games. This is going to take a while in the thread... but let's try it. I'll automate it if it seems useful and fun.

Next person to the thread answers:

Do you prefer Cheerios, or C3PO's?

SteveDallas 02-09-2005 03:00 PM

King Vitamin!

(doh! Too Late!)

lookout123 02-09-2005 06:15 PM

alpha-bits

lookout123 02-09-2005 06:16 PM

i don't know if having the cereal games means we all have too much time on our hands or not, but UT, thanks again for providing a fun place for us to congregate.

warch 02-09-2005 06:18 PM

OATMEAL! oh sorry. I guess I got carried away.

Undertoad 02-09-2005 06:21 PM

Trix, or Cream of Wheat maple?

I'm looking out for you, l123. Actually this one has been bubbling under my brain since... well, since they first did it on the radio about 6 years ago.

Brrrrt Foul! Five yards, jump ball and 2 minutes in the box.

Or are you cheering for a favorite to make it out of the East?

warch 02-09-2005 06:43 PM

I have no idea whats going on. Now I'm in the box. I'm flashing back to gym class.

cowhead 02-09-2005 07:07 PM
