Things we want

Have you ever found something that you think would be cool to have but you honestly know that you really have no need for.

I have a few rechargeable spotlights in the house in case of power failures. They are in the 1 million candlepower range. This is enough to throw a visible circle on the trees 150 feet away from my house about 40 feet in diameter.

Cabelas is selling a 10 million candlepower rechargeable spotlight . Short of hosting a Hollywood premier in your backyard or guiding in planes loaded with contraband in deserted fields, what does anyone need with a 10 million candlepower spotlight?

And yet I want one.

Yep! an AC mains adaptor that plugs into the cig lighter in the car. I've only ever used it once and that was just to see if it worked. I plugged a 100w table lamp into it, grinned, unplugged it and threw it in a cupboard. What a waste of fifty quid!!!

Well, it would probably drain your car battery, but you could get an electric grill and a floor mat. Drive up to your girlfriends house, put the floor mat and grill on the hood of your car, plug it in and put on some burgers and sausages. When they're ready, ring the doorbell and invite your friend out for lunch.

She'll either think you're clever or crazy.

P.S. In America we call that 'tailgating'. Since it's England and the front of the vehicle, I don't know what to call it - 'bonneting?'

That's one of the two commonly-known definitions for the word here in the States. The other being "driving extremely close to the person in front of you."

Two meanings -

1) Driving too closely to another vehicle.
2) Serving food out of the back of a vehicle as a picnic or barbeque.

I don't know what the English tradition is at sports events, but in the US there are still stadiums which allow small parties in their parking lots. In many cases people now use free standing grills, but you used to be able to fold down the tailgate of a truck or station wagon and place a grill or hibachi on it or use it as a serving platform.

Now that sports stadiums are even more dependent on their concessions, I have heard that there have been attempts to discourage the practice.

The definition has been stretched to include any outdoor party near a sports event. IMO, if you don't have a car or truck in the background, it's not a tailgate party.

TheSnake 10-17-2004 11:18 AM

I always wanted basically a cart on a monorail that went down the steps in my house, turned the corner and took you all the way to the kitchen. I suppose it's like a roller coaster, but the idea is not that outlandish.

Extreme violence.

The KC Chiefs have one of the greatest of tailgating traditions, with thousands of people cooking in the parking lots of Arrowhead Stadium before each home game. However, we have banned charcoal grilles due to a wind having blown over a grille some years back, igniting a grassy area and burning numerous vehicles.

There have been no active attempts to ban tailgating, though. There would be riots in KC if they did.

wolf 10-17-2004 01:22 PM

Let's see ... I want a Barrett 50

And one of those wall screen 60 inch plasma tv monsters. I think it would be THE SHIT for videogaming.

But I need those, so it doesn't really fit the topic, does it ...

Ok, I got something ... I want a floor length mink. Although possibly not a coat. I was thinking something more in a hooded cloak ...

They also have a great tradition of having great regular seasons, then choking like little bitches in the playoffs. :)

--I wouldn't mind a second computer. I have a bid in for one on eBay right now, but I'll probably lose b/c I don't want to pay any more than I bid. Of course, if I win the computer, it'll need an OS and some upgrades.

--I'd like an iPod...the biggest one they make.

--I'd also like a CD changer in my car...and XM.

Are you playing Santa this year Rich?

Elspode 10-18-2004 09:01 AM

Ha! Piffle on you both! The Chiefs have started a new tradition this year...sucking right from the start! No way we're going to have a post-season letdown loss this year, is there?!! :vomit:

While I might be fat, I'm not jolly and certainly not that generous. BTW, I saw those chairs in Pottery Barn and the first thing I thought of was how someone would pay $1400 bucks for the kind of chair you find in yard sales. Maybe not leather, but that style is 40 years old.

Yes, you plug it into your ciggarette lighter and shine it into the fields as you drive slowly down the road. When the deer look up at you and get put into a trance by the light, you pull out your rifle and drop them. Hunting.

Brown Thrasher 10-19-2004 01:47 PM

Tailgating is synonomous with "Georgia Bulldog Football." From a neophyte to a Rapscallion. Thanks, your use of words describing me are most appreciated.
Just think I could have been called someting degrading like a liberal.....

Timeless is the word you're looking for. Maybe comfy too.

We're still talking about the chair, right?

No, were talking about style, design, form following function. ;)

I found a new favorite Action Figure.

Radar 10-28-2004 01:25 AM

Here's an invention I didn't know I needed until I found out it existed. I don't know how I've lived without one for this long. And before you ask, this is a real device you can buy in stores and not someone having fun with Photoshop.

Cyber Wolf 10-28-2004 06:17 AM

Is it me, or does that memory stick there look a bit too wide to be practically placed on that swiss army knife chassis?

Beestie 11-15-2004 06:42 AM

I'm a sucker for night vision goggles:

Cyber Wolf 11-15-2004 07:28 AM

I want a complete digital media set up: an Avid box with dual mammoth screens, another box to run SoftImage, Bryce and Maya 3D programs, a dedicated rendering/scratch disk box, and then a box for the icing programs by Adobe, Macromedia and Sony.

Sigh...money. Need more money.

So there.

Avid? :vomitblu:

Hasselblad H1D for me, 22mpx Medium Format DSLR...
And a G5 Dual 2.5Ghz with 4G of RAM to handle the ensuing stream of 150Mb images and a 30" Apple display to view them on...., around 30k in total...

jaguar 11-18-2004 06:00 AM

Hasselbad make very, very nice cameras. I learnt the basics of Avid but it just seems like overpriced crap compared to Final Cut Pro.

Cyber Wolf 11-18-2004 06:27 AM

Never had a chance to use Final Cut Pro either, though it's been one I've wanted to poke at. Still costs a lot.

glatt 11-18-2004 08:24 AM

I had no idea that Hasselblad made digital cameras. 22megapixels! Wow.

jaguar 11-18-2004 12:00 PM

Cheaper than a full Avid setup.
Hasselblad make a number of different digital backs, of course you can just take them off and load your favorite 120 film etc which is nice. The H1D seems to be a more intergrated package, I'm not sure if it *can* take film. Leaf have been making incredible MF Digital backs for a number of years, the coolest thing is the PDA you get with it which gives you a copy of each pic wirelessly almost as soon as the shutter shuts. Personally I don't know if I'd want clients that close during a shoot but still very cool. Leaf backs alone go for 25k+ but in the kind of shoots that gear gets used that's around the operating cost for a full day on location anyway. The latest leaf ones are 17 and 23mpx.

I had seen these and thought about getting one. Then I imagined forgetting to leave it at home and watching it being thrown into an airport security disposal bin.

BTW, what is that little spike thing at the top, a metal toothpick or a hole punch?

Judging from this article, I was right to be worried. I'll stick to flash drives on pens.

Quote:

Reading Passengers

The day of a security screener often begins at 4:30 a.m., when most people are sound asleep. If screeners are short-staffed or off to a slow start in the early morning, the longer lines tend to drag much longer into the day. Some mornings, passengers wait more than a hour to get through the checkpoint.

Before the shift starts at 5 a.m., screeners huddle in the break room or a conference room with a supervisor to receive the latest information about threats to aviation and new gadgets to watch out for. Last Thursday, a TSA supervisor briefed more than a dozen screeners about a new computer memory device made by Swiss Army that is also equipped with a small knife.

Looks like a ball-point pen to me.

SWISSMEMORY TM USB Victorinox
NEW: available with capacities up to 512MB!

It is the first time that an original Swiss Army Knife has been equipped with a USB Memory. The SWISSMEMORY TM USB Victorinox is a trendy accessory, a perfect gift and business tool. The small all-rounder integrates numerous useful tools and is available in two versions: one with a stainless steel knife, scissors, a file and a screw driver and the other without these tools, to carry when travelling on planes. Both versions include a pressurized pen and a red LED.
The SWISSMEMORY TM USB Victorinox is available with a memory capacity of 64, 128, 256 or 512 MB.
It is also possible to detach the USB part a patented technology.
I might consider the version that only has the pen and USB, although I might was well buy a flash memory pen. Pressurized pens are nicer since they can write upside down.

BUT I WANT IT!!!!

ACtually the thing I want is actually nothing more than an overexpensive toy typewrite for me. I want am Ipaq 4355. As handheld go it kind falls in the middle but its what I like. I was actually going to get one for my Birthday. I waited two years to actually deciede I could afford to spend that much on me. Even sold a few collectibles on Ebay to fund part of it. THen my G_D_truck blew a fuel pump. Damned thing cost me 160 dollars. Ofcourse that was off Ebay too. Full price was 300. Unfortunatly I used my Ipaq money for the pump. As birthdays go, its a bummer. But at least I can drive around in a funk rather than sitting at home. Besides, my wife loves me and I guess thats all I really need. (sighs heavily and smiles at wife)
