The Glamorization of Alcohol Thread

Friday is coming. What is in the blender, glass, snifter, bottle, puddle around the tallboy...? Actually I started this cuz Jinx mentioned a cosmopolitan, which I never heard of apparently because I never saw Sex in the City.

Cosmopolitan
A modern classic that won a world wide appreciation after the tv series Sex In The City.

2 parts (lemon infused) vodka
1 part Cointreau
2-3 parts cranberry juice
(squeezed lemon or lime)

Stir or shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.
Garnish with a slice of lemon.

The debate on weather to stir or shake a Cosmo is on. The stirrers claim that stirring produces a clearer drink while the shakers claim that all fruit juice martinis should be shook.

Another controversy is whether to use lemon or lime flavoured vodka in a Cosmopolitan. As weather to add or not to add squeezed lemon or lime. Some claim it will be too sour, others like it like that. Some even like their Cosmo mixed with Absolut Kurant.

However. We have tried all variations. And we like them all. Try your own blend of a Cosmo, and remember that drink mixing will never be an exact science.

wolf 10-14-2004 07:18 PM

I have longed for a "signature" mixed drink, one that I can order and seem sophisticated.

Until then, I'm a Double Shot of Jack with a Beer Back Woman.

perth 10-14-2004 09:42 PM

I usually order vodka tonic with a twist of lime, with Grey Goose being the preferred vodka. I like it because it's pleasant without being sweet, and it manages the balance between "fru-fru" and "something my dad would drink". It's reasonably classy looking, but the lime gives it an impish quality, and the fact that it's generally served in a double old-fashioned means I never have to worry about it showing up in some goofy gimmick glass.

alphageek31337 10-14-2004 10:44 PM

For me, it's either a vodka martini, obscenely dry, olive garnish, or any J. Random Single-Malt, depending on my mood. If I'm going to the wet bar to make drinks for friends and I, though, it's all about the white russians. Easy to make, and still quite tasty, even with cheaper liquors.

glatt 10-15-2004 07:37 AM

A good margarita is all I need. Beer's good too.

Kitsune 10-15-2004 08:29 AM

This weekend's stupidity will be fueled primary by Dewar's and Coke or, if I end up at a bar, Long Islands. :drunk:

Or maybe Guiness if I can find that friendly Irish pub I've heard about. Oooo, decisions, decisions!

Catwoman 10-15-2004 09:20 AM

Absolut is by far the best vodka. There's a bar down the road from me serving over 200 different types of vodka and I still prefer that (ok so I haven't tried all 200 types but you get the idea).

My favourite drinks are, in a somewhat particular order: a glass of good vintage Rioja, a nice Merlot, real ale (NOT lager or poncy branded beer), a nice dry Pinot Grigio or Soave, fruity cocktails like sex on the beach and pina colada (the cheesy bit had to come out somewhere), a fresh strong Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic.

I can't stand guinness, bacardi or whiskey (although I like the idea of drinking whiskey by the fire. I don't know, it just seems to fit). Oh and Absinthe is the work of the devil.

Just for curiousity's sake, did you make your absinthe, or import it? I've been curious about trying the stuff since I read about it in Modern Drunkard Magazine, and I've been debating whether I want to pay outrageous prices to import some "real" absinthe, or just take some high-test liquor and make my own.

Absolut is 2nd on my list. I actually prefer Absolut in more "complex" mixed drinks, like a White Russian. But Grey Goose has a slightly different bitterness that complements the tonic and lime really nicely. Try it sometime, get one of each and compare.

Catwoman 10-15-2004 09:51 AM

"Modern Drunkard Magazine"

What a ridiculously brilliant name for a magazine. I have no idea if we make Absinthe in this country, I certainly didn't make it myself, and I wouldn't bother spending vast sums importing legitimate poison - just drink a tank of petrol.

I haven't tried Grey Goose - don't know if they have it over here but will look out for it. Although I generally don't like the taste of vodka - think I prefer Absolut only because it's more... simple. Yes that's the word. Oh and I have a professional interest in their advertising, which is outstanding. Tut. Fed by the hand that bites me.

SteveDallas 10-15-2004 09:56 AM

I have had a damned cold that I can't get rid of for the last week or so, so I haven't been drinking.

But my poisons of choice:

Beer, mostly American micros and German imports. But willing to try most things as long as I know it's not going to be like making love in a canoe.

Martinis. The original martini, please. I can't stand it when I order a martini and I'm asked "Vodka or Gin?" Tho I don't like olives. I usually take an onion (I believe this technically makes it a "Gibson") or nothing.

Single malt Scotch. MMmmmm. Balvenie is my favorite.

I have to add that I've been drinking martinis and single malt since well before they were fashionable. Not that there's anything wrong with being fashionable.

On the subject of "cute" drinks, when I was on a trip to Santa Fe this past spring, I ended up at a restaurant with a group of people from my conference. There was one drink on the menu called a "panty dropper." One of the women at the table decided to order it, mostly to see if she could make the young, hunky waiter blush. (That would be a yes.) She said it was basically a Cosmopolitan.

Kitsune 10-15-2004 10:04 AM

Modern Drunkard kicks ass. I can't get enough of their Wino Wisdom

“Depression is just anger without enthusiasm. It’s an empty beer bottle with no one worth throwing it at.”

i don't think you're in any danger of that happening regardless of what drink you order. ;)

hot_pastrami 10-15-2004 11:28 AM

My wife has long been a fan of Cosmopolitans... when I build us some drinks, her preferred variation is the "Rasmopolitan," one made with with Raspberry vodka, Cointreu, Cranberry juice and sour mix.

I tend to be a long island man, mostly because it takes a lot of alcohol to have any effect on me.

I'm a long time fan of Stoli - plain, Vanil, Citron, (i think that's what it's called) and Razpberi. Nice and smooth.....and will be what I'm imbibing in tonight after work with someone special :)

Uh, I never much liked Stoli, I think it's in large part thanks to a string of "bad" experiences with it in college. I'm not a big fan of flavoured vodkas either, though the "Van Gogh" chocolate-flavoured vodka makes a really unique screwdriver. Definitely worth at least one try.

My 'learned aversions' are for Southern Comfort *shudder* and tequilla - one makes me sick, one makes me naked - both good and valid reasons to avoid drinking either of them.

Dag

SteveDallas 10-15-2004 01:11 PM

I know we've got tequila around here somewhere........

Pie 10-15-2004 01:30 PM

My Perfect Drink:
Beefeater gin martini, 5:1, shaken, up, with an olive. Please chill the glass first.
Mmmm.. mojitos.
Red wine, mostly zin and shiraz.
Tequila shots with lime & salt.
Margaritas (classic lime only; strange fruit need not apply)
Domestic microbrews or imports
- Pie

busterb 10-15-2004 06:05 PM

2 parts Cactus juice, 1 part tequila. Bomb yes!

Tonight.....bottomless glasses of Stoli and cranberry with a splash of grapefruit...

And I kept my clothes on in the bar.....(yeah me!)

xoxoxoBruce 10-16-2004 08:38 AM

Did you ever think about drinks you could drink?
There’s so many drinks if you only just think!
Such wonderful drinks! Even drinks that are pink!
Or yellow! Or purple! Even green, blue or brown.
You can think of a drink for any color around!
You can have scotch and soda.
You could have gin and juice.
You can have a wine spritzer
if you’re really a puss.
Have a mint julep. Or Jameson’s on ice.
Perhaps a slippery nipple’d be nice?
Margaritas! Mimosas! How about a martini?
Or bourbon? Perhaps you’d prefer a bellini?
A rusty nail just might hit the spot.
Do you like tequila? Let’s do a shot!
Do you savor Sambuca? Pernod? Or Ouzo?
Oh, the drinks you can drink if you just choose to do so!
We could have Bailey’s. Kahlua. Or Jager.
But I’m getting thirsty, so do me a favor.
Make a selection and go place an order.
And please pay for mine too, ‘cause I just have a quarter.
Max Farr

"Pick Me Up (Big Chicken)" - John Entwistle
From his first solo album, "Smash Your Head Against the Wall"

Gather 'round the bar let's have a race
I wanna see how much beer I can pour into my face
Bottoms up, down it goes, sending bubbles up my nose
Pick me up and lay me somewhere safe
Don't stand me up, I'll fall. Lean me up against the wall.
I'll mever touch the demon drink again.
All I'll touch is tea, alcohol's destroying me.

All I want to do is sleep.
All I want to do is sleep.

Everything is spinning 'round
Got to get up off the ground
Sorry if I miss my round
This one's on me lads, here's a pound.

Take me out and put me in a taxi.
Tell the driver where to go, 'cause I don't think I'll know.
See you all tomorrow in the bar.
I've got to come back, 'cause I've had to leave the car.

All I want to do is sleep.
All I want to do is sleep.

Trilby 10-18-2004 07:14 PM

eerily accurate account of alcoholic obsession. :drunk:

Hey! thanks Dagney!! I'm not TOOOOOOO far from Central Pennsyltucky! Not far from "you-uns" at all! :)

Dagney 10-19-2004 07:26 PM

Well, next time I have a shindig, i'll let ya know.

I'm sure a lot of you have caught this already, but if you haven't you must read:

Mmm... Dewar's...

busterb 10-22-2004 02:33 PM

Some outdoor writer said something like this years ago. Good whiskey is like good friends, Hang around with either one too much and things go bad.

And it was, and I did, and it was good. Wings were good, stoli was good, the butts on the regulars were F.I.N.E. fine, I had my first public shot of Tequilla in years, (and stayed dressed), and had an all out raucous good time.

This will be a friday tradition - visiting different bars however, till we find a 'home'.....

Anyone in the HBG area is welcome. :)

Always seemed kinda natural to me, you drink alone and dont have anyone to fight with. It never did seem to me to be the universal sign of impending peril, just a lot more enjoyable.

Funny mag there Kitsune. Worth hitting while I drink alone.

busterb 10-24-2004 09:05 PM

Have you ever been setting at picnic table & some sob drives up & ask "hey got an extra beer?" Isn't that kinda like extra money?

Mrs. Dallas had to head down to Wilmington for a concert. She planned to stop at Total Wine for, umm, supplies, and I gave her a couple items I wanted. It turned out that, gosh darn, the large sizes were the best deal. (2 liter Pepsi provided for scale; small child provided just because he wanted to be in the picture.)

elSicomoro 11-22-2004 10:02 PM

You rotten son-of-a-bitch...letting your child drink! Shame on you!

elSicomoro 11-22-2004 10:04 PM

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread...

I picked up my yearly bottle of Penn Dutch Egg Nog on Friday. I think it needs more egg nog though...has too much of a liquor taste.

I think he's actually taunting the young one. Those seals are intact.

Loss of yardage on the possibility of the curtain monkey getting Pepsi, though.

SteveDallas 11-23-2004 08:55 AM

Good eye, wolf. (I will say, however, that the seals are now broken.) Though if he doesn't start going to sleep before 11 I may try a bit of the booze on him. ;)

wolf 11-23-2004 01:34 PM

My family (Irish, of course) held that whiskey was the cure for nearly any ill a baby presented with ... colic, crankyness, general irritability, and especially teething. Just put a wee bit on your finger and rub it on their gums.

Griff 11-23-2004 01:44 PM

My Irish Mom used to give us blackberry brandy. One time the pediatrician asked if she really thought it was doing any good. She said she was sleeping better. :D

breakingnews 11-23-2004 02:09 PM

I was sick as hell last Friday - I left work 30 minutes early and took a nap from about 5:30 until 11 pm. I felt slightly better when I woke up - but I was absolutely rockin' and rollin' around 1 am after having five vodka-tonics and three shots of jaeger.

And whaddya know, I woke up and felt like a hundred bucks.

So, from here on out, the Beer Doctor is in. :)

My dad loves scotch...his favorite is... Glenmorangie. The expensive RSVPPPP kind. I buy him a bottle every year.
