Show us what flaver your stars and stripes come in!

Actually this is an anonymous poll, so you don't have to show anything if you don't want. All UT's statistics down below got me kind of curious and with the election coming on and all... What percentage of cellar members consider themselves to be of what political persuasion? You may describe your outlook in detail or not, but I thought it might be interesting to see the percentages.

PS Oh, yeah, I think I mis-spelled "anarchist"? It doesn't look right, but ya'll know what I mean. ;)

marichiko 10-07-2004 04:09 PM

And I love whoever just jumped right in and called themselves a pinko commie, socialist, liberal, libertarian, anarchist! Now that's MY kind of party! :D

Happy Monkey 10-07-2004 04:22 PM

I'm a socialist, liberal, MOR democratic libertarian - there are so many issues.

glatt 10-07-2004 04:22 PM

From The American Heritage College Dictionary:
Quote:

Liberal: Not limited to or by traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes or dogmas; free from bigotry ... broad-minded
Sounds like most (many?) folks in the Cellar.

From the same dictionary:
Quote:

Conservative: favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.

Too bad neither candidate represents one of those outlooks eh Glatt?

It's too depressing for words. I'll be casting my vote this election because I hate Bush, not because I feel especially fond of Kerry. :yeldead:

I suspected that would come up as a comment from this bunch, Bruce. The poll only allows for 10 options (I'd have put in many more). I tried to detract from the "pigeon hole effect" by choosing the option to allow for multiple choice responses, not just one. Hence, the delightful first response of "pinko commie, socialist, liberal, libertarian, anarchist" all rolled up into one respondent! :D

What if one can comfortably self-identify as a fascist, but not as a pig?

Hypothetically.

Well, hypothetically, you could write a post stating the pro's of fascism to the rest of us who remain unenlightened about the subject. You could post your own poll where you made pig and fascist seperate choices. Of course if you were pro-pig but anti-fascist, you could write a pro-piggery rejoinder. The possibilities are endless. Or you could just ignore the entire thing and not participate in the poll. Or you could post a humorous hypothetical question just to see if I'd rise to the bait. ;)

Yes, the Jewish, Islamic and vegan fascists. Good point.

At this point 27 votes from 15 voters. Looks like most people are not comfy with one choice. Making it multi-choice looks like a wise move Mari, you clever devil. :)

Going off glatts liberal defined....Is there a way to be an anarchist and not liberal? Wouldn't you Have to vote both? Is being liberal (in a way) anarchy? :D

Yeah I looked up the definition for anarchist.......the definitions seem more complimentary than opposite.....haha :D

Haven 10-08-2004 05:58 PM

Bees are on the what now?

Due to the cynical humanist category not being included, I opted for the anarchist libertarian fascist option. I hate government as it is practiced :mad2: , I believe in the supreme right of the individual to govern himself :3eye: and I think idiots and assholes should be shot into space or sent to an island with an electrified beach  , so I guess that makes me a little bit of an extremist.

Anyway, as for the misspelling of anarchist, you were fine, but I'm not too sure you nailed the spelling of flavour.

Anyone else out there feel like there should be an option for people who hate people?

No.....No...I really do want Bush to win the next election. This in no way lessens my hatred and utter contempt for the man and all he stands for, but ....... yes, I want Bush to win the election

Happy Monkey 10-08-2004 07:23 PM

So you're one of the people who hates people?

Trilby 10-08-2004 07:40 PM

DanaC--you got some 'splainin' to do! :eyebrow:

DanaC 10-08-2004 07:41 PM

No. I think if kerry gets in he will try and continue the occupation because the situation is now too entrenched to be able to walk away from it in the short term. If Kerry presides over a war which becomes more and more entrenched, possibly with what looks like it could be an economic mess in the making running alongside that, there's a risk he'll be the last democratic president for a good few years.

If Bush wins the next election and continues to rampage around the world getting his soldiers killed for no good reason whilst presiding over an administration which has effectively divorced some 44 million Americans from the healthcare system .......there's a possibility he'll be the last republican president for a few years.

 In our dreams, girl! In our dreams! By the way, feel free to vote in the poll. I am curious about the political composition of the CELLAR, the US I could just look up the statistics on. So International members please vote the flavour of your Union Jack or Jolly Rodger or whatever other flag you may go by. (I knew that I'd spelled SOMETHING wrong - just couldn't put my finger on it) ;)

I'll take a Red Flag and vote socialist.....*breaks into a rousing rendition of the Red Flag *

".........Ooooohhhhhhh....we'll keep the red flag flying here!!!!!!!!"

Mmmm. I remember singng that at the Socialist and anarchist shindig down at Skegness when I was 19, was very moving. Even more moving was singing the Internacionale. The disco had suddenly ground to a halt because of a power cut so some bright sparks stood up and lit their lighters or matches and began to sing the Internacionale. We all stood and joined in, not just the people who'd been on or near the dancefloor. Everyone, about 300 people if memory serves, raised their fist and saluted as they sang......Funny how this stuff sticks in your mind. It was simple and heartfelt and many of us were young enough not to have lost the dream yet.

Interestingly there is a great deal of variance in the translations of the Internationale ( which has been translated into 40 languages I believe) Here's the English version for anyone who might be interested.

The Internationale

British version

Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale
unites the human race!

No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale
unites the human race!

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot!

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale
unites the human race!

Stirring stuff in a dark hall in Skegness. ....Um sorry and all for this little diversion from the topic at hand....but since I've gone this far might as well also give you the American lyrics.

The Internationale

USA-version

Arise, you prisoners of starvation!
Arise, you wretched of the earth!
For justice thunders condemnation:
A better world's in birth!
No more tradition's chains shall bind us,
Arise, you slaves, no more in thrall!
The earth shall rise on new foundations:
We have been naught, we shall be all!

'Tis the final conflict;
Let each stand in their place!
The international working class
Shall be the human race.

We want no condescending saviors
To rule us from their judgment hall,
We workers ask not for their favors
Let us consult for all:
To make the thief disgorge his booty,
To free the spirit from its cell,
We must ourselves decide our duty,
We must decide and do it well.

'Tis the final conflict;
Let each stand in their place!
The international working class
Shall be the human race.

I was surprised to find just how completely different all the versions are. The translation from Russian seems to show each nation's main preoccupations within the class struggle.

Undertoad 10-09-2004 08:55 AM

Mari, for YOU to wish breathing problems on anyone is such remarkably bad form. Grow up a little.

I ran with libertarian anarchist because the political meaning of liberal has pretty much been corrupted on both sides of the aisle. I see a lot of folks on the left going with progressive now. I don't know if its just a Bill Moyers thing or a back to the roots thing? You have to control the language to control the argument, I guess.

flippant 10-10-2004 01:01 PM

As for me I think Bill Moyers (I don't usually watch television anymore) was shocking when I saw one of his shows. I believe he has swung over into the deep right and is pulling that off with a resounding Thud. Correct me if I am wrong......but he seems vapid and tired. As far as sides of the aisle Griff, I am watching the left and have enough objectivity to see more than two. To say there are only two is to minimize the inherent creativity of the individuals involved. If fascist is progressive I think you can count Bill M. in. Or maybe he's just a Burn Out? Maybe Burn Out should be an option in this poll? Some people still have dreams.....and it seems to me the left is still fighting for those dreams while trying to go rounds with the current riddle wrapped around a nightmare. This country is being ripped apart.

marichiko 10-10-2004 06:41 PM

On this one I must disagree with you, Flip. Re-read Moyer's speech on "Inequality matters" and tell me if that is a document from the far right. I don't think so unless the far Right has suddenly gone Liberal without telling the rest of us about their sudden conversion experience.

Griff 10-11-2004 06:41 AM

I really have no idea what flip is saying.

warch 10-11-2004 03:01 PM

Have you confused Bill Moyers with Bill O'Reily perchance? Far as I've seen weekly, Moyers is still my rock solid rational, thinking liberal.

flippant 10-11-2004 07:41 PM

Like I said, I saw only one program.....but he was hugging a muslim that presides over a group called Muslim's for Bush....repeatedly calling him "his man" and ignoring the liberals on the panel the entire show.....Seemed cheap and maybe needs to go into my new irony thread. At least you can watch O'reilly's eyebrows flit around like a frightened animal. I may be confusing Bill's if he is Not the man with his own show on comedy central.......
note: If I did indeed accuse the wrong Bill feel free to falsely accuse me of something as ridiculous. :D

warch 10-11-2004 08:00 PM

Bill Moyers is a 70 something broadcaster, former LBJ White House Press Secretary who has a terrific show, along with David Brancaccio on PBS called "NOW". www.pbs.org/now
Perhaps you mean Dave Chappelle?! :)

Clodfobble 10-11-2004 08:13 PM

I think she's talking about Bill Maher, although he hasn't had his show on Comedy Central for quite awhile.

elSicomoro 10-11-2004 08:15 PM

PI left Comedy Central at the end of 1995 and went to ABC in January 1996.

flippant 10-12-2004 11:15 AM

Ah-Haaaah! Maher not Moyer! Thank You! Yeah, and I like Moyer! geez...I better go watch more television my knowledge of the talky-heads has hit an all time low.
This may be on or off topic, but I got to show Dubl-ya my stars and stripes color wheel this morning. I feel better now.

Happy Monkey 10-12-2004 11:29 AM

Bill Maher is no right winger either. On his HBO show, he trashes Bush regularly. He's no fan of the Democrats either, but his choice abuse is reserved for the Bush administration.

flippant 10-12-2004 03:54 PM

The only show I saw he was siding with the Muslims for Bush org. Is this a regularity on his show? He wasn't bashing Bush. He even claimed that the head of that org. was "ballsy" for standing up in that way. Made him proud as he ignored the other panelists. The liberals were invited onto the show but were unable to cut in between the commorodary. One of the panelists even mentioned something about it, but got no response but a small laugh. I saw only one show (as previously stated) but the intial impression I got was not good.....and I'm not going to go get cable to see how ignorant I am of his true persuasion. I live with a comedian and get tired of jokes that aren't funny bouncing off me until I feel blessed to hear one of the few good ones. (it helps her put an act together) Seems like he's offering more of the same. Does he write his own material?

I don't feel like looking up that word so yes I know a spelling error was made. :greenface

Happy Monkey 10-12-2004 04:09 PM

How long ago was this? I only started watching when he moved to HBO, but I wouldn't be surprised if at some specific point he liked a particular right winger more than the liberals on that episode - he's been hot and heavy with Anne Coulter more than once. But remember that this is the guy who was fired from ABC for making a statement that was deemed not patriotic enough. He's plenty willing on specific issues to take on the liberals, but he sides with them for the most part.

His show is good, but not worth getting HBO for. However, his show combined with the Sopranos, the Wire, Carnivale, Six Feet Under, and reruns of Mr. Show are. :)

I voted liberal, democrat/MOR and socialist. I believe in choice and balance without denying nature's basic inequalities. Survival of the fittest baby: pinko commies bugger off with your outdated impracticable egalitarian notions, and fascist farm animals likewise with your distorted neurotic ramblings.

I get frustrated when people ask about political leanings. Surely there's only one way - the right way - which is democratic, balanced and unfair.

It must have been a recent show. It seemed election specifc. As far as HBO programming goes:
I'm really not that hip. If I start watching a lot of T.V. my brain might spiral downward into complete atrophy. If I get to keep reading I'm doing good. Sometimes the pictures even seem like their moving... :D That's Free!
