Dove hunt

I went down to visit plthijinx this last weekend for the for dove and hog hunt .
Well first off let me say that Texas is a BIG ASS state !!!!!! LONG Damn drive from Paragould !!!!!! Fred ( plthijinx ) gave me EXELANT directions , so it was a smooth trip down. He called me a few times dureing the drive to make shure i was on track , no mishaps on the way down
When i got there we imeditaly loaded up in his farm jeep ( 74 CJ5 )and went for a cruse around the property , beers and fire arms in hand ( Fred " I didn't see you load that weapon !!!") So i loaded up and off we went . LOTS of beer was consumed that nite !!!!!!:drunk: Oh and a possum ALMOST meet it maker . :rattat:
The next morning we slept in ( from all the beer the nite befor ) , any how we went out looking for the fearsome dove , 2 were shot :shotgun:( i won't say who got them , more on that later ) . By then the birds had stoped flying so we rode around some more , enjoying the country side . We say the funnyest thing , an armidillo can jump !!! Who'd a thunk it :biglaugha ( i guess the bird shot in his ass helped some ) :eyebrow: By then some of Freds friends started showing up . Cool bunch of guys !!!! More beer was consumed , steaks and taters for lunch/dinner ( picantie sauce is suprizelingly GOOD on a baked potato !!!) Lots of ammo was expended , poker was played , good time !!!!!
The next morning we got up early to chase some more dove , 2 more were shot . After a short while the birds stopped flying again , and it was raining . We went back to the cabin and had breakfast , eggs bacon and some nasty looking but VERRRRRRY tasty hashbrowns . Well the birds wern't flying so the skeets did , we went thru 3-4 boxes of skeets .
I had told Fred that if there was a game warden in the STATE he was going to find me , Fred said " Those guys haven't been down here for years , don't even sweet it !!" Fred left to take his tractor back to the front of the property , and came back rideing in a game wardens truck
I hadn't bothered to get a licence ( i was thinking OH SHIT , there goes my new shot gun , my truck , and WAY to much money !!!!!) One of Freds friends is a lawyer , he saw the game wardens truck and said every body has a licence , right ??? I told him " uhh not me " , he said to not say a word unless asked a direct question . The game wardens come sauntering up ( boots and cowbow hat and all ) " shooting any birds ???" Nope, no birds to shoot . " where is every body from ??" Every body but me said Texas , "so your just shooting skeet ?" Yes sir . The older game warden ( who by now had looked in mine and every body elses coolers) said " so you are telling us that you drove ALL the way from Arkansas just to shoot skeet ????" Yes sir !!
As they were driveing away one of Freds friends said " PULL " , 2 skeets flew from the thrower , BOOM !!!!! Mitch got a double !!!!!!!:shotgun: :shotgun:
After that I was driver for the rest of the trip !!!!!! :yelsick: :yelsick:

Hunting Texas style !!!!!

Cyber Wolf 09-30-2004 10:37 PM

I always wondered what dove (or any other small bird for that matter) hunters do with the doves once they've shot them. I'd imagine there's not much eatin' on a dove to start with and the shot would just ruin what meat there is. So far, I've chalked it up to the pleasure some get of watching a living thing come to pieces when its shot.

zippyt 09-30-2004 10:43 PM

We eat them , yes you have to watch out for shot , but they are VERRRRRRRRY tasty !!!!
There isn't much meat on a dove , thats why the limit is 12

Cyber Wolf 09-30-2004 10:45 PM

Are they like cornish hen? I likes cornish hen.

zippyt 09-30-2004 10:52 PM

Cornish hens are small chickens , pen raised , tasty in their own right , but wild game that you have harvested ( shot ) your self tasts WAY beter !!!!!!!

plthijinx 09-30-2004 11:01 PM

if you get enough dove, breast them, stuff a jalapeno slice in both sides of the breast, season them then wrap them in bacon and set'em on a nice warm to hot grill with your favorite link sausage on top so the juices pass over the dove........oh boy, i'm hungry now!

hehe, i got so much shit from the pack about leaving with the tractor and coming back with game wardens! lol! i was going to finish discing a field and i noticed a bubble on the sidewall of the right front tractor so i cruised it on up to the front shed and when i got there i decided to top of the fuel tank. as i was doing so i noticed a truck on the highway just sitting there. then i noticed that it was the game warden. "shit" i thought to myself. i knew i wasn't hunting but the other guys i knew were skeet shooting and well, shooting an armory. i muddled around a bit, moved the tractor to the shed to start working on the tire and after a bit i hear a "hey there!" i introduced myself and got one of their names (there were 2 of them, a young man named jason and the other, well, we'll just call him "old man river") they asked if i was the owner of the property to which i said yes then they asked how we were fairing out and i said that there wasn't much action around. then they asked how many hunters i had back there and if they could "poke around a bit" yeah. what the fuck was i supposed to say, no?!? that doesn't float here in texas with game wardens. they do what want. fact of life here. anyway i told them they had perfect timing and i needed a ride back to my truck for tools. y'all should have seen the look on everyone's face when we rounded the corner! priceless puts it mildly. we pull up and jason stands next to me while old man river proceedes to snoop around our trucks and coolers looking for birds. i didn't have my license either, i forgot to get it at wally world the day before so i just played the good host letting people hunt my land (all while wearing my hunting vest, but hey! we're shootin' skeet right?!) shit. we really weren't doing anything wrong and the birds that were shot were shot by people with licenses so there was really no reason to be nervous but let me tell you, i was shaking like a leaf trying to smoke my cigarette. if they'd of asked why i was shaking i'd of said that i'm an alcoholic and hadn't had my first drink of the day!! crap, more later, i gotta go to bed......zip, goathead and add anything i missed. (you think mitch got the 2fer because of my fat joke?!?!) i'll let you tell that one bro!

plthijinx 09-30-2004 11:02 PM

oh, and cream cheese too on the dove!

plthijinx 09-30-2004 11:06 PM

oh, my daisy dove gun. heh. a browning citori over/under .410ga and i shot a loooooooooooooooong bird to with it. about 75 yards. (yeah, i went to town after heckle and jeckyl left and got my license)

slang 10-01-2004 12:24 AM

Wow, that looks like fun.

The 4 seat Jeep is a great idea. Wonder why I've never seen them around here?

Thanks for making the effort to take the pictures. Looks like a good time.

On another note, the Darwin Award site is chocked full of alcohol/gun related...incidents. :D

busterb 10-01-2004 09:51 AM

Sounds like my kinda fun & my damn luck. :-) BB

Elspode 10-01-2004 02:05 PM

Was that the jeep that John Wayne rode on in Hatari? Oh, wait...that was a Land Rover, wasn't it?

Sounds like a pretty good day of blasting away, fellas. Sometimes I wish I hadn't sold all my guns. Sigh.

zippyt 10-01-2004 04:55 PM

Bruce - dove tastes like dove , MUCH better than chicken !!!!!
Splode - The corralation between Hitari and what we were doing was brought up more than once . I was waiting for a lion or a rino to come busting thru the brush at any time !!
CWolf - beleve it or not we were verry safe with the shooting irons
Slang - this is the first time i have ever seen a rig like this in person , i need to build Fred some beer holders for the front seats though , oh and some steps for the sides to replace the one i riped off when i was off road .

I'm sure you were, but that's what they all say. ;)

"Oh don't worry, it's not loaded..."

wolf 10-01-2004 11:35 PM

the phrase you are looking for is "Hey, y'all, watch this!"

Cyber Wolf 10-01-2004 11:43 PM

Or how about "Back off, man. I know what I'm doing!"

xoxoxoBruce 10-31-2004 06:32 PM

Between I-95 and the Delaware River, smack up against Philadelphia, PA, International Airport, lies the gritty little Township of Tinicum.
Behind the closed, 500 acre, former Westinghouse Steam Turbine plant, there's a strip of high (5 to 10 foot) grass and weeds to the river.
Back in the 20's and 30's a different kind of grass grew here in abundance. There were also several rough board Jazz and Blues houses that world famous musicians would drop in to jam and score some weed for the road.
Alas those days are gone the way of swordfighting and knickers......the weeds have reverted to the domain of the critters. I've seen rats you could saddle back there.
Anyway, these racks were taken with a bow & arrow within a half mile of the runways. Maybe the noise of the planes helped the hunter get close enough to score with an arrow in that thicket.
I thought this thread was a better place than 404's deer thread. :)

plthijinx 11-02-2004 09:57 PM

crap, the one and only time i got shot, yeah, it hurt, we were all sober! damn the madness!

plthijinx 07-24-2005 12:42 PM

hey zip, ya ready for dove 2005?

xoxoxoBruce 07-24-2005 02:17 PM

Look out Zippy, it's a trick.

Hobbs 07-24-2005 04:30 PM

Well, I for one am jealous, Zip. Here in AZ, we have to hunt dove the old fasion way, hoofin' it 30 miles from where I live and truckin' around some empty field somewhere. All I got last opening season (Sep 1st) was blisters. Brand new Bennelli 12 Ga. and I didn't get to one shot off with it. Grrr. We'll it's almost Sep 1st again. Here's hoping.

that's basically what we did. albeit we have mesquite trees and pecan trees that the dove like to sit in. funny thing about my place is either the dove are there or they're not. season before last the white wing were everywhere one weekend and gone the next.

zippyt 07-24-2005 09:24 PM

plthijinx, Dude I am SOOOOO ready to stalk the toothsome dove again , I have my rifle in the shop so the hogs BEST watch their ass as well !!!!!

plthijinx 07-24-2005 11:29 PM

We just bought 16 hogs and let them loose on one of our leases, it is about 400ac. It is going to be a good year for hog hunting.

I agree. We had some very well prepared doves at a whole hog roast where we did the hog Hawaiian style in the ground. It was all very good.

skysidhe 01-03-2011 11:11 AM

Whole hog roast Hawaiian style is the best pork I ever ate. EVER!

I'll kill it myself without a problem. I just figured a gunshot to a creature that small would yield more bits and feathers than else, especially since the eatin' part is most likely where the shot will hit since it's biggest. When you kill a cornish hen for eating, you don't blast it apart. You generally wring neck or remove head, which leaves the whole eating part delightfully intact.

I've heard that too. The Passenger Pigeon was wiped out, gone, kaput, yet I still get birdshit on my car. Obviously we have more work to do.

zippyt 01-03-2011 01:57 PM

The spread of the shot ( shot gun , thus LOTS Of little Pellets ) is generly so wide you only get 2-3 pieces of shot Per Bird , If that

Lamplighter 01-03-2011 02:36 PM

So you break only one or two teeth when you chew down

zippyt 01-03-2011 02:44 PM

No you eat slow and careful

plthijinx 01-03-2011 08:48 PM

so this guy goes dove hunting and gets the bag limit. he takes them home to his wife to cook for supper. while eating their scrumptious meal 1 of the 3 kids excused herself to go to the restroom. she came back and was as pale as a ghost. mom says "what's wrong honey?" she answers "i was peeing and BB's came out in my pee!" mom said "oh honey i'm sorry i was in a hurry and missed some of the shot from the birds." well a little later the other daughter excused herself and came back to the table with the same look on her face. mom said "let me guess...shot in your pee?" to which the daughter nodded. "you'll be fine honey, again i'm sorry for not getting all the shot out of the doves." about this time junior gets up from the table and returns with the same ghost look. mom again says "shot in the pee son?" he said "no mom!! i was jerking off and shot the dog!!"
