Shaun of the Dead

I saw this movie last night, and besides the two annoying fuckin morons who obnoxiously laughed at EVER single laugable joke or what not, it was great. There were only two downfalls, which had absolutely not significant effect on the movie, just minor. ONe, it took a while for the action to take place, but that's just the story setup. Second, it was a bit difficult to understand some of the dialogue. Except for these two, it was incredible. Not for the weak stomached thought, parts were very disgusting. FREAKIN hilarious though.

Actually listened to clips on NPR or the other public station here. Funniest bit I heard was when they decide to sneak past zombies by imitating zombies and one of the women takes on the job of acting coach. Very funny.

crossfire 09-26-2004 10:01 PM

Well, so you know how funny it is, that was the least funny part.

Happy Monkey 09-27-2004 07:50 AM

I loved it. I watch a lot of British TV, so the accents hardly ever threw me, and I caught the quick cameo from the second cast member (Tim) from "The Office". Very funny movie.

Catwoman 09-27-2004 07:54 AM

Ah you have inspired me to watch it - might rent it out this evening. The Office is brilliant didn't know you got it over there?

Happy Monkey 09-27-2004 08:41 AM

Caught it on DVD based on rave reviews. Great show. An American version is being made - certain to be worse, and almost certain to be bad - but it's got a former Daily Show guy as the boss, so I'll probably give it a look.

They did the same thing with "Coupling". Excellent British show, garbage American. I can't understand why they don't just buy the rights to show these sitcoms in their original forms.

I am looking forward to "Shaun of the Dead", I really enjoy horror wrapped around comedy (like "Sleepy Hollow" or "Hellboy", not "Scary Movie").

Catwoman 09-27-2004 09:35 AM

I think there is a perception in England that Americans won't 'understand' our dry satirical comedy - that you can only appreciate the obvious more slapstick type. Of course there is a place for this type of humour, but I think this is quite insulting to a lot of Americans who are more than capable of 'getting it' - I mean sure our comedy is clever but it's not that complicated - for god's sake if the mass of this country can understand it your lot certainly can - we're all the same. Just a shame you don't get the 'pure' versions and be allowed to judge for yourselves.

I can't speak for the perception in England, but the real problem is that that's the perception in American TV studios.

Plus, American channels would much rather show a mediocre show that they own than a great show from another studio.

crossfire 09-27-2004 01:08 PM

in my opinion probably one of the best horror movies this year. Lets see how grudge, saw, and child's play is

A big chunk of it is that some Americans can't understand it, period. Between the accents and the unfamiliar idioms, a lot of the jokes fly right over many of our heads. The dry wit style also lends itself to "throwaway" punchlines, sort of muttered to oneself, which makes things even harder to hear clearly.

But many cable channels do offer BBC, so we at least get a small trickle of unmolested shows from across the pond.

crossfire 09-27-2004 09:40 PM

I'm not really sure what the difference between humor and "dry humor" is, but besides the accents and the muttered punchlines, i found the entire movie hilarious. Even though I cannot understand the accents, I still love hearing them.

perth 09-29-2004 10:48 PM

Watched it. It wasn't even close to what I expected, and while I wouldn't say it's a great film, it was a lot of fun, and a good laugh. The character "Ed" reminds me a *lot* of a good friend of mine, and I think that made it a bit funnier. Definitely see it if you get a chance. Depending on special features, it would make a nice addition to the DVD collection.

I thought this was the most suckful horror/comedy flick I've ever seen.

DanaC 12-04-2006 07:10 PM

I don't think it's that anyone assumes Americans won't understand the dry humour. I think it's more that there is an assumption that Americans may prefer something they can more closely relate to. We do it here too, make tv shows of our own based on an American tv show premise. But, we are more used to watching American TV as a staple than Americans may be used to watching Brit Tv as a staple, so it's less of a problem for us to relate to it....we're trained from an early age to watch American TV :P

DanaC 12-04-2006 07:22 PM

I loved Shaun of the Dead. As an avid schlock horror fan, I really appreciated this comedy homage to some of the best/worst zombi flicks.

Aliantha 12-04-2006 07:23 PM

Well my husband likes it...about as much as dodge ball and that other stupid show...what's it called....Anchorman! Yuck!!!

Aliantha 12-04-2006 08:07 PM

If you want to watch something when you're stoned, try Bad Boy Bubby. That'll really make you wonder what's real and what's not.

or the Thirteenth Floor. That, and 'Brazil', are the closest things on film you'll get to P.K.Dick.

who really could twist your mind.

Maybe it's a male thing.... I thought SOTD, Dodgeball, and Anchorman were all very funny.

bbro 12-05-2006 11:35 AM

I LOVED Shaun of the Dead - my ex BF, on the other hand, didn't. I ended up buying it a couple months ago.

I have no interest in seeing Dodgeball or Anchorman.

Sundae 12-05-2006 12:50 PM

Shaun of the Dead is in my Top 5 - I found out about it while it was still being filmed so the build-up for me was immense. It would have shaken my faith in the world in general if I hadn't enjoyed it. (Now I just have to hope Hot Fuzz lives up to my expectations)

Happy Monkey mentioned the Martin Freeman cameo - in that line-up you see some of the cream of British comedy walking past. Am hoping for similar in January :)

One of the funniest reviews I read on the US Amazon site was someone who stopped watching it because the British accents were too annoying. Kept me going all afternoon the fact that you would get a British film out and only then consider your prejudices...? Anyway.

I'll see Dodgeball one day because a reviewer with similar tastes to me enjoyed it. Anchorman, not so interested.

Anchorman was not very good. Ferrel was great in Old School and Elf, but hasn't been in anything good since. IMHO.

I have to disagree. There were some awesomely funny scenes in Anchorman. Jack Black with the dog on the bridge. The gang fight between the newsteams. "Afternoon delight". Wil Ferrel's enormous hard-on. Jazz Flute. "I pooped a hammer". The cologne scene:

My God. What is that smell? Oh!

That's the smell
of desire, milady.

God, no, it smells like... like a used diaper
filled with Indian food.

Desire smells like that
to some people.

What is that? Smells like a turd covered in burnt hair!

It smells like Bigfoot's dick!
Yeah, lot's of funny stuff....

Shawnee123 12-05-2006 02:00 PM

I don't like Ferrell, Sandler, or that Something About Mary movie (and Cameron Diaz sucks.) Slapstick doesn't do much for me, but when done well I enjoy it --like Dumb and Dumber, Austin Powers, etc.

DanaC 12-05-2006 05:56 PM

The main guy in Shaun of the Dead was in one of my all time favourite comedy shows: Spaced.
