Good Things

Please feel free to contribute at will. I started this list in another context and thought that it would be cool to post it here and see what others come up with.

Don't worry. I won't be asking anyone to get into a circle and sing Kum Bah Yah anytime soon.
  • Cigarettes that are sold buy one get one free.
  • When the sun comes through the clouds "just so" and it looks like the gods are touching the earth.
  • A field full of sunflowers. Or any other flowers that are bright yellow. I'm fond of blackeyed susans myself.
  • Children's laughter. (go to a playground for about 20 minutes if you don't have this sound available to you nearby.)
  • Bonfires on a cold night.
  • Friends that you can be comfortable around without having to worry about what other agenda they are serving by knowing you.
  • The movie Airplane.
  • A cold coke on a hot day.
  • Watching wildlife ... whether it's a hawk circling in the sky or a squirrel raiding your birdfeeder. Pay attention to the lessons they offer you.
  • Playing a musical instrument with enthusiasm, even without skill if you derive pleasure from it.
  • cellar.org (most of the time. take the good stuff personally, know the bad stuff is coming from idiots that if you met them in real you wouldn't piss on to put them out if they were on fire.)
  • Chocolate Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
  • Preseason football
  • Regular Season Football
  • Super Bowl Commercials (The football in the Super Bowl is rarely of good quality)
  • Catching fireflies
  • Catching the scent of flowers on the wind that you know you don't have in your backyard.
  • Catching the timing of green traffic lights just right.
  • Driving into the country without anywhere in particular to go and no time in particular that you have to get there, or home.
  • Flying a kite.
  • Watching someone other than yourself be embarrased by the proprietary birthday song and being presented with a slice of complimentary ice cream cake roll at a major chain sitdown restaurant.
  • Sleeping late.
  • Staying up all night to watch the sun rise over a really good landscape.
  • Rolling down a gently sloping hill sideways, just like you did as a kid.
  • Making snow angels.
  • Finishing an adventure video game.
  • Playing Candyland with a child.
  • Eating a pizza with toppings that nobody else you know likes but you love, even if you won't order it often because your friends think you're wierd.
  • Paint-by-Number or any other craft kit for children, including Doodle Art coloring Posters. If you go Doodle Art, get a set of high quality markers, or better still artist quality colored pencils (Berols or better), rather than using the set of 8 inadequate dry ones that come in the set.

Clodfobble 08-25-2004 05:28 PM

Finishing a crocheted blanket and giving it to a child whom you know will genuinely love it.

Getting exercise in a manner that also happens to be productive, such as moving, mowing the lawn, or disassembling a deck (which I did this afternoon.)

Adults going back to school.

OOoooh. I love that one. One of my friend's daughters still goes to bed with the blanket I crocheted her as a birthing gift.

knowing that you have friends who have been true friends since before you can remember. there is nothing like a common history.

Coming home from work and having your whole family greet you at the door (including the dog - who is wagging her tail so hard it's about to fly off her butt).

dar512 08-25-2004 09:11 PM

Thought of another one. Waking up to the smell of bacon and coffee on a Saturday morning.

Edited for better phrasing.

-Your pet rat bruxing and/or dozing in your lap.

-Uploading a particularly stubborn page of code and finding it actually WORKS!

-Waking up early on a weekend and remembering you have no pressing engagements.

-A warm bed on a cold morning.

-Having family far enough away so they don't invite themselves over all the time, but close enough for a weekend visit.

Elspode 08-25-2004 10:38 PM

Sliding up from a low bass to a highish mid-note on a big Moog modular synth.

Being in the mountains on a perfect day.

Standing under the stars on a moonless, cloudless night somewhere out in the middle of absolute lightless nowhere.

Being at Old Faithful while it erupts, with no one there but you and your wife, under a bright moon, at about 2:00 in the morning.

Seeing something incredible and having someone there to turn to and say "Did you see that?!"

Watching a meteor shower under perfect conditions in a comfortable chair.

Winning the big darts match.

Having someone tell you they love you and you know absolutely, positively that they mean it...then telling that person the same thing back, meaning it just as much.

Watching the Olympics.

Chiefs football.

A perfect bottle of mead.

Putting on old clothes after losing weight and finding that they actually fit.

alphageek31337 08-25-2004 10:55 PM

A Vodka martini, up, lime twist after a long evening at work
Waking up, then realizing you have 2 hours more before you have to
(from my youth) Snow Days!
Texas Hold 'em and decent cigars until 3am with my frat brothers
Sifl and Olly
Checking out a show and remembering why I was so into the punk scene in high school
Finding out your ex-girlfriend got herpes from the guy she dumped you for
Turning jam-bands up on the stereo while cooking and/or doing housework
Having people say, "Have you lost weight?"

lumberjim 08-25-2004 11:38 PM

Good things
  • blowjobs
  • cold Yeungling lager after sweaty yardwork on a hot day
  • blowjobs
  • the smell of a fresh bag of ....something....*cough*
  • watermelon juice running down your neck
  • finding a twenty in your laundry
  • sleep
  • boobs
  • sushi grade tuna for $10/lb.
  • My kids waving to me every morning from the window as I drive off....they get pissed if they sleep too late to do it.
  • spooning
in no particular order, of course.

Trilby 08-25-2004 11:48 PM

In the spirit of what LJ said, I myself enjoy a cunning linguist.

alphageek31337 08-26-2004 12:59 AM

on finding a $20 in the laundry:

I had a friend who used to, occasionally, mail himself a $20 bill. It only costs $.32, and it was kind of cool for him to randomly get a letter with $20 in it. Sure, it costs a little more than simply finding them in the laundry, but it's a lot more sure.

Tigana 08-26-2004 04:36 AM

sitting around a campfire with friends,
a new guitar,
learning a new song,
writing a new song,

Griff 08-26-2004 07:25 AM

Watching a mother hen showing her chicks the ropes.
Making it outdoors or in a tent.
Listening to someone describe putting his/her dream in motion.
Pete's smile.
Goofy kids.
Funky music in a funky venue.
Wolf starting a thread that pulls me out of a two day grump.
Pushing up a timber frame with people power.
Taking Merlin (the dog) mountain biking.
Catching the rythym of the moment riding a difficult singletrack without a dab.
Walking the woods with someone who gets it.
Being productive, being lazy.
A good book and a wood fire.

Thanks Wolf, you rock.

A 2 am conversation with a friend you feel like you've known forever...and not even caring about the time - or the fact you've got to work in the morning

* rolling in late (early) from a night of drinking/partying (or what have you) with friends and knowing you don't have to get up early.

* going in to the bar at the beginning of said evening and having the bartender smile and set up your drinks.

* having someone cook a meal for you.

* backrubs.

* watching the cartoons that you used to watch as a kid.

* random flirting.

* flirting with your significant other.

* i'll agree with the previous, making someone laugh so hard that they spew beer/soda/any liquid or can't breathe.

* laughing so hard that the above happens to you.

Fall asleep while holding somebody in your arms

Katkeeper 08-29-2004 06:54 AM

Two purring cats.

  • Watching the sun come up over the fields and warm the world while on a roadtrip.
  • Hearing a song so good it gives you goosebumps.
  • Hearing the engines spool up and getting pushed into your seat by the force of takeoff on an airplane.
  • The Appalachian Mountains.
  • Waking on a Sunday thinking it is a Monday.
  • Thanksgiving Day + Blanket + Food + Family + Football.
  • The blue-green color the ocean turns on a good sunset.
  • A quiet, overcast, grey day every once in awhile.

Possible Good Things?

Being admired after someone secretly rifles through your private journal and really enjoys the way you have described them. This has never happened to Me however, but I can imagine that this would be a very good thing about now. :greenface

Ernestine 09-14-2004 06:31 PM

mmmm, macaroni and cheese ...doh

Reading the first few pages of a new book and realizing that this is one you're really going to sink into.

Friends who know you well enough to know that if you say something that sounds mean or insensitive you were probably just making a lame attempt at humor and you're really a pretty nice person in spite of everything.

Finding a new message board where everyone seems really cool and quite tolerant of the inane utterings of newbies.

Jacquelita 09-14-2004 08:10 PM

In no particular order...
  • An intimate (funny) conversation - when you both completely "get" each other
  • a foot rub
  • the first deeply penetrating stroke
  • saying exactly what you wanted to say, exactly the way you wanted to say it
  • A big comfy chair after a long day
  • A freshly made bed with crisp linen sheets and a huge down comforter
  • the sweet smell of timothy grass on a cool summer evening

Clodfobble 09-14-2004 08:49 PM

...
saying exactly what you wanted to say, exactly the way you wanted to say it

You know, spewing ginger ale all over my keyboard is probably not very good for it...

Jacquelita is my new hero. :D

bluesdave 09-14-2004 09:45 PM

Being with a group of close friends, having a barbecue lunch on a verdant hill overlooking a gorgeous beach, listening to the crystal blue waves gently rolling in, the gulls chirping, and sipping a glass of good Aussie red.

Did I mention watching eagles gracefully soaring overhead?... :)

Bullitt 09-14-2004 10:25 PM

Grillin out with your buddies in the backyard and driving stick shift through the country.

Catwoman 09-15-2004 05:11 AM

Smiling at a sexy stranger smiling right back
When someone says and means 'what do you think about that?'
Getting home from work to find an old friend waiting
Laughing drinking spilling playing poker and debating
Letting go of everything and letting life live you
Feeling your heart pounding after meeting someone new
Sleeping next to someone warm who burns your heart and soul
Cuddles kisses strokes delicious touching making whole
Walking and washing in waterfalls, swimming away in the sea
Living alone together with nature, forgetting all about 'me'
Knowing you've found true companionship
Not illusions of romance or love
Realising that this is life
and that it is enough.

jaguar 09-15-2004 05:33 AM

making me jealous catwoman :)

Catwoman 09-15-2004 05:41 AM

no need. smiling right back :)

LabRat 09-15-2004 08:28 AM

#1 My daughter snuggled in my lap in front of a big campfire looking at the stars during our first family camping trip.
#2 Quietly enjoying the same fire sitting next to my hubby after said daughter falls asleep in the tent.
