xbox or ps2

in the grand scheme of things, what's better xbox or ps2?

Clodfobble 08-11-2004 12:29 PM

With regards to technical ability, Xbox is way better. Better graphics, better audio, more memory for bigger levels. But that's to be expected since it came out a year later.

With regards to number of games available, PS2 has more.

With regards to type of game available, Xbox has more in the sports and 1st-/3rd-person shooter genres, while PS2 has more puzzle games, RPGs, and platformers.

PS2 is cheaper.

Longer-term, the Xbox 2 is scheduled for release next summer, and the PS3 sometime after it. There is disagreement as to whether the Xbox 2 will be able to play Xbox games, and though there's no official word that I've heard, it's reasonable to expect based on Sony's history that the PS3 will be able to play PSOne and 2 games. Most developers will stop making games for older consoles once the newer ones come out.

It really all comes down to what you want out of your console.

crossfire 08-11-2004 12:47 PM

well, the thing is that i already have a ps2, but with halo, ninja gaiden and doom 3 in mind, plus i love graphics, who doesn't. That's where I'm stuck.

perth 08-11-2004 02:08 PM

If you're a graphics whore (like me), go Xbox. I'm not gonna tell you again that Doom 3 on PC will be a more fulfilling experience than on the Xbox. You're obviously not listening. :)

That's my conundrum. No matter what, I'm gonna want to get the doom 3 experience. I would in a heartbeat buy it for pc, but my pc sucks and i won't get an upgrade for a long time. On the other hand, if I run it now, it will not run for shit i will lose the whole experience. At least if I buy xbox, i'll get great games like ninja gaiden and halo plus doom 3 to look forward to.

perth 08-11-2004 09:12 PM

Jesus thinks you should get the Xbox, and I guess I agree. It's an excellent system, and if it's gonna cost too much to upgrade the PC, then it's probably worth it. A couple games I would suggest:

SSX3
Crimson Skies
Morrowind (also on PC, but you might have problems running it :) )
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

elSicomoro 08-11-2004 09:12 PM

I prefer PS2...and I don't care about Doom 3.

perth 08-11-2004 09:13 PM

That's because you're retarded. :)

Whatever happened to Radio Sycamore? I miss that.

Edit: Added smiley. I'm sure Syc knows I'm joking but best be on the safe side.

elSicomoro 08-11-2004 09:33 PM

Some of us have more important things to do...like jerking off.

I thoroughly enjoyed doing Radio Sycamore, and no doubt it was the greatest radio show ever created. But I need to figure out a better way to do it--using shoutcast, a better config for my computer, etc. Plus, Rho and I are moving next month, so we've got a lot of shit to do for that. Maybe I can bring it back in late October.

i rented ssx3 on ps2 and it was brilliant, so i may also buy that game. My question is, when I buy xbox, should i buy halo or ninja gaiden. I know that the reason to buy xbox is to get halo, but i also LOVE STAGED violence. I hate real world violence, but violence in music, movies and games i love and i know that ninja gaiden is pure violence

perth 08-11-2004 10:41 PM

You should get SSX3. :P

I would say Ninja Gaiden. Halo is good, but I never understood why everyone thought it was a system-seller. Ninja Gaiden is excellent, but diabolically hard. If you haven;t played Splinter Cell and like stealth games, you might give that a try.

Syc - Okay, excuse accepted. Keep us posted on when you think you might bring that back.

Cyber Wolf 08-13-2004 07:44 AM

PS2 all the way.
-I'm more of an RPG/puzzle game kind of person
-The only sports based game I'd ever play is SSX(original, Tricky AND 3) and I have all those for the PS2
-The only shooter (1p or 3p) I'd play is the Mechwarrior based games and I already have that on PC (joystick! Woo!)
-All the games from Mircosoft I would want to play come for PC and for cheaper than Xbox games. Mechwarrior is the only Xbox game I'd consider but I already have Mechwarrior4 + Black Knight for PC so...

The Xbox may own the PS2 when it comes to graphics, but Cyber's got a point. If you're a big fan of those genres, you're gonna be much happier with the PS2. The few RPG's on the Xbox are generally very high quality RPGs, but the PS2 has a massive library of excellent ones, and if you ever manage to run out you can always go hunt down some of the older PS1 titles.

vsp 08-13-2004 10:01 AM

If I remove games that are either also out for or have a reasonable equivalent on the PC, DC, PS2 and/or GC (all of which I have already), here's the complete list of Xbox games I'd pay to play:

* Panzer Dragoon Orta
* Deathrow

That's reason enough for me to not even consider adding an Xbox to my collection.

Since you already have a PS2, I think your question isn't so much, "which is better?" as it is "Is it worth it to buy another console?"

The Xbox is down to $149 with no game. If you watch ads in the paper you will often see sombody bundle it with another controller or accessory or something. If that amount of money is something you feel comfortable spending, I know you will enjoy the Xbox. Doom 3 will definitely be better represented on the Xbox than any other console and you would be able to get Halo (now $29.99) and Halo 2 will be out Nov. 9. There's lots of ohter great stuff on the way for the Xbox as well. (FABLE will rock the RPG world.) Plus, you will have the best of both worlds since you've already got the PS2.

I gave up on PC gaming because no matter how often I upgraded, I could always bet that the next "must have" game would run like shit. Now if I see a game I want, I can guarantee it will run EXACTLY how the developers designed it to on my xbox. I like that a lot. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything, and my "upgrades" now come about once every five years and cost a hell of a lot less than the latest PC.

Undertoad 08-13-2004 11:29 AM

How's xbox live? Good enough to warrant paying a monthly fee to play online against other people?

crossfire 08-13-2004 01:26 PM

Despite what perth said, i bought xbox for a really good price, halo rules. I 'm not going to get xbox live because for my purposes, there is not point, but for onliners, i heard it was great.

perth 08-13-2004 01:30 PM

Hunh? Didn't I end up agreeing that Xbox was the way to go?

Yeah. Yeah I did. :p

crossfire 08-13-2004 02:03 PM

Sorry perth, I forgot about that post.

perth 08-13-2004 06:38 PM

So did you pick up anything besides Halo?

crossfire 08-14-2004 12:58 PM

no, what other games should i pick. I was thinking about either ninja gaiden or Riddick. But Halo will probably be lasting a long time

perth 08-14-2004 03:38 PM

Chronicles of Riddick is supposed to be excellent, though I haven't played it and cannot really recommend it.

If you have any place in your heart at all for Star Wars and RPGs, you can't go wrong with Sar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. That was the game that got me into Xbox in the first place.

Soul Calibur II is an excellent fighting game. I liked it a bit better on the GC, but the Xbox version was amazing as well.

SSX3. Can't plug this game enough. I love it. And the Xbox version is far superior to both the GC and PS2 versions.

Isn't the Grand Theft Auto series available on Xbox now? Loved it on the PS2. Well worth playing. I found Vice City to be a bit annoying, but I pretty much hate everything about the 80's so that's probably why.

crossfire 08-15-2004 08:24 PM

Well, until i get further in halo, i'm going to stick with halo and not other games, but thank you anyway. I'm not a big fan of star wars honestly, or GTA, but I loved SSX3 on ps2 so i should check up on it on xbox. and I CANNOT WAIT now for DOOM 3 to be released.

Bullitt 08-29-2004 11:14 AM

Whew I've been gone awhile (month and a half, not that anyone actually noticed/cared).
As for XBox Live, It is most def. worth it if you like playing squad based shooters. I can't even begin to explain how much fun Rainbow 6 III, Counter Strike (I'm gonna get raped for saying that one), and Ghost Recon online is. The voice chat is a little hard to understand at first but you get used ot it real quick. And the best part is.. almost no lag! Since you're required ot have a broadband connection, and you have a connection rating next to each server name on the server list, its quite easy to find a good server to play on.
But hey thats just me.

vsp 08-30-2004 08:36 AM

Within the next 30 days, the PS2 gets:
* ESPN NHL 2K5 -- state-of-the-art hockey for $20.
* Phantom Brave -- RPG that promises to suck away my life force.
* Star Ocean: Till The End Of time -- see previous comment.
* Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires -- an interesting mix of hack-slash combat and ROTK-series strategy.
* Street Fighter Anniversary Collection -- multiple editions of SF2 and SF3.
* Silent Hill 4: The Room -- survival-horror fodder for my wife.
* Katamari Damacy -- about as surreal as games get and a must-buy.
* Gradius V -- Treasure doing a Gradius shooter == must-buy.
* Sly Cooper 2: Band of Thieves -- promising platformer, despite its furry overtones
* a new DDR game, for those who are into that
* Shin Megumi Tensei: Nocturne -- another solid RPG

And Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas three weeks after _that_.

Xbox who?

crossfire 08-30-2004 01:22 PM

Well, I got ninja gaiden and its a fantastic game, just fuckin hard. I cannot get passed the second boss. Does anyone know a strategy for me?

Chewbaccus 08-31-2004 09:05 AM

I personally would take the Xbox, for most of the aforementioned reasons (graphics, etc.). But mostly because it has about...six games that I'd like and can't get for GameCube (seven if you're the type to count the GTA double-pack as seperate games). PS2...the only title that would get me to consider getting a system is GTA: San Andreas, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Rockstar release that on Xbox as well.

Another factor for me is controller types. Ever since the PSX, I've had an aversion to Playstation controllers. I'm just not a fan of controllers with buttons that can double as an ad hoc geometry lesson, I suppose. That and I think I'm the only human on the planet with hands that could hold the original Xbox controller comfortably. It was a pleasing spectacle...it was like it was made just for me.

EDIT: Only person without NBA prospects.

crossfire 08-31-2004 10:29 AM

Well, ever since I've gotten xbox, i've loved it a lot. Again, a major reason for getting xbox was to get doom 3, which by the way was pushed back to October 26, and i love all the games i have now. So, it was a great choice to buy xbox.
