I support this counts as an image, I started playing with illustrator a few days ago, how's this looking?

Happy Monkey 06-15-2004 12:25 PM

That's pretty cool. From imagination, or is there a model?

SteveDallas 06-15-2004 12:26 PM

I hate to be critical, but you forgot to add color.

;)

Um, even in greyscale it looks fabulous.

I should take more time to learn Illustrator. If only I can get my two-month-old desktop to work again.

jaguar 06-15-2004 12:55 PM

half model/half imagination, I'll try colour sooner or later but I want to get a better grip on shading in b+w first.

Illustrator is great fun, while this is fairly 'straight' work, you can be really creative as well and turn out some pretty stunning effects.

smoothmoniker 06-15-2004 02:31 PM

i like it. It's got drama.

The hands are a bit man-ish

-sm

Clodfobble 06-15-2004 03:32 PM

The nose and chin area seem a bit disproportionate to me. But it's a beatiful style overall.

jaguar 06-15-2004 03:47 PM

The nose is looking a tad big, yea the hands look a little man-handish but getting them to work at all was work enough, they were mostly from scratch so I'll live with it ;)

This is concept work of sorts for a project (which is also why there is the wierd tatoo-thing on her arm) and partly just learning how to use vectors with a modicum of skill.

warch 06-15-2004 03:57 PM

I dunno about the illustrator stuff at all....but if you was inking this thing... the shade/tint action around the eyes is a bit wierd- the lack of eyesockets. that effects the nose foreshortening too. you could also do with some subtle contouring/shading around the collar bone/ neck area. Good image though...

jaguar 06-15-2004 03:59 PM

I tried eye sockets, I found the effect too heavy but you're dead on, I need to do a more subtle job of it. Some more stuble shading in a few areas might help, I might go back and have some fun with the airbrush.

warch 06-15-2004 04:05 PM

Maybe a darkened upper lip, too? or varied contoured line between lips? Getting dimension with the stark graphics is very tricky. But fun to play with, eh?

jaguar 06-15-2004 04:08 PM

The line actually does have a fair bit of variety, a fair bit of detail is lost here, it works best at A4/300DPI or so but once again, you're right the top lip could do with some more shading, thanks! You're really useful.

Better, worse? What needs adjusting.

elSicomoro 06-15-2004 04:33 PM

She needs bigger boobs.

;)

warch 06-15-2004 04:46 PM

The under eye shadows bug me. maybe the shade the side of the face?, temples? neck looks better. the light source is a bit inconsistent from tank top to face and shoulders. (Right top in shadow) ...? Fiddle fiddle.

It's like having a tutor =)
Compression screwed it up but both eyes are now 'looking' in the same direction as well.

SteveDallas 06-15-2004 05:26 PM

So jaguar do you draw in "real life"? I've always wanted to do stuff like that but my very rudimentary dabbling has convinced me that one is unlikely to get good results with these computer programs unless you have some artistic instincts/skills in the first place.

(It looks great, BTW.)

jaguar 06-15-2004 05:30 PM

I can reasonably and I've had a fair grounding in drawing and design theory which helps no end, with this kind of thing I can kind of 'see' where shadows need to go, the more I do it the more honed the sense gets.

The first drawings I did that I liked I did by simply tracing the outline of a picture and filling it in, it gives you a feel for how things work and proportions, then you can start from scratch.

Beestie 06-15-2004 05:32 PM

That's awesome. Excellent contrast. But as you indicated, the eyes are not looking in the same direction - its slight but noticeable. Good stuff.

blue 06-15-2004 05:37 PM

People with this much talent piss me off. But yeah the boobs are too small, so you're not perfect.

Nice work Jag. Does this mean you figured out the cel shading thing?

jaguar 06-15-2004 05:38 PM

yea, I just gave up on the concept of outlines attached to shapes, you can't get enough definition do this kind of drawing with that anyway.

wolf 06-15-2004 10:20 PM

Welcome back, breakingnews! Been wondering what you'd been up to ...

Strangely, I also thought she needed bigger boobs.

and try softening the undereye shadows some more, mebbe diffusing them somewhat? She looks like she was punched a while back and is a week past raccoon stage.

jaguar 06-16-2004 01:38 AM

She's meant to be fairly young which is why I didn't make them any bigger. The undereye shadows shitted me for about half an hour last night but I couldn't get them to work, I'll play again this morning for a bit.

warch 06-16-2004 11:38 AM

The under eye shadows seem to land on her upper cheek bones, a bit low and broad. Maybe try to contour the face from the side- the temples, the cheek?

jaguar 06-16-2004 11:57 AM

will do =D

fwiw, jag, i think the eye shading is fine

jaguar 06-16-2004 01:14 PM

I feel strangely violated.

SteveDallas 06-16-2004 01:23 PM

Yeah, if LJ violates you you KNOW it's going to be strange.

lumberjim 06-16-2004 01:42 PM

think of it along the terms of being famous. you know you've arrived when you make the tabloids. feel better?

i think i prefer the martyrdom of obscurity ;)
no realy offense taken, don't worry

The other one is now looking gorgeous, i'll post a final version for critique soon.

This one just isn't coming together and I can't sem to work out why, warch? ;)

perth 06-17-2004 11:49 AM

The jawline, maybe? That kind of jumped out at me. The other thing may be the hair on the right-hand side. It kind of looks to me like she's missing half her head there. Other than that, it looks great and I envy your talent. :)

jaguar 06-17-2004 12:00 PM

Thanks
yea the hair there is a little fucked but the face shadows are a mess, here, made a few more mods.

dar512 06-17-2004 12:08 PM

I think the shadows are too harsh. Maybe pick a lighter color? Or it looks like there's a bit of pink in the skin tone, maybe add a touch of pink to the shadows as well?

IANAA

warch 06-17-2004 12:24 PM

Watch the outline of the jaw into the neck, its wierd. if you cant resolve the angle with shadow, make her hair fall over it. :)

Shading- On her shady side: the face contour is great - you sense the structure. The dark side of the nose is heavy handed. It would not be so regularly dark around the end of the nose. I think I need another nostril indicated. (The silliness of these sentences is entertaining me) The lighter side of the face is confusing. I would make a dark contour line between lips. maybe add soft shading to upper lip, that little curve, and under mouth -What would receed a bit. Maybe even match the nose end shadows to what would also be indicated at the chin to be consistent with light source. This lighter side of the nose is strange. Maybe shadow just near the eye and towards the bottom where it comes forward. And the cheek shadow, I dont think you need it at all.

warch 06-17-2004 12:26 PM

Looking again at the jaw- the head width is off, you need to thin it or add bits of an ear. That jaw curve ends at your ear.

jaguar 06-17-2004 12:49 PM

Not sure what I'd do without you =)

Time to add some serious hair i think ;)

how are we looking now?

Clodfobble 06-17-2004 01:55 PM

Wow, much improved. Very very nice. I'd add some highlights to the hair, but that's just me.

lumberjim 06-17-2004 02:07 PM

make her eyes a smidge larger. she seems to be squinting

warch 06-17-2004 02:07 PM

Looking better! I think the proportions of the face and jaw are still too wide though on that lighter side. In the image, the distance from eye to hairline is too large. (check this on your own face)and from the corner of your mouth to jaw/ear is not so wide either. Bring that hairline in a bit.

jaguar 06-17-2004 02:18 PM

1 Attachment(s)
bring the jaw up a little as well? I'm not sure and it's a fair bit of work so I thought I'd get an opinion first ;)

warch 06-17-2004 02:43 PM

I dunno, just trace the jawline up to where you think the ear would be placed. think about the temple. you dont have to do an ear, but that will help the proportion.:)

jaguar 06-17-2004 02:48 PM

Yea I just noticed it sort of slopes down towards the end, odd, not sure how that happened. Almost finished the torso so i'll finish that, do the corrections then shove up another copy.

Thankyou for all this help, you've all been invaluable, particularly warch who clearly knows his stuff.

warch 06-17-2004 03:05 PM

Ahem. Her stuff.;)

whoops! *begs forgivness*

The hands are poor, working on that but they're bloody hard in that position.

Undertoad 06-17-2004 04:29 PM

Aren't hands spose to be the most difficult thing to draw correctly? I can't draw at all m'self...

Happy Monkey 06-17-2004 04:31 PM

I only draw things that don't exist. That way, I can't do it wrong.

jaguar 06-17-2004 04:47 PM

Depends on the position of the hands and the lighting really, the way she's playing with the cloth is what makes this a bitch. Personally I find getting faces right far harder (as this thread will attest).

Final. (until i get nitpicky and start playing again)

lumberjim 06-17-2004 05:30 PM

that rocks

she looks like she's very pensive

Happy Monkey 06-17-2004 05:46 PM

Maybe it's just the black and white, but she kinda reminds me of Gaiman's Death.

jaguar 06-17-2004 05:46 PM

I was going for something a bit haunted, I think I pulled it off. Fixed up the ugly right hand as well.

lumberjim 06-17-2004 05:53 PM

I'd hit it. ;)

just kidding, jinx. i would never hit it

jaguar 06-17-2004 05:54 PM

I was expecting to find her with a footy helmet on :P ;)

lumberjim 06-17-2004 06:04 PM

naw, that gag is a one timer. if i fucked with any more, it would just be rude.

hey, take a harder look at her neck where the tattoo is. i think the contour line should be about where the edge of her neck is. i didnt notice it at first because my eyes were drawn to the tat, but she looks like a bit of a bucket neck.

jaguar 06-17-2004 06:06 PM

hmmmm you have a point. arrrrgghhh, not sure how that got this far.

noone has anything to say about that?
How about this?

Clodfobble 06-20-2004 03:37 PM

I like the blurred buildings, but I would prefer if the main figure weren't as blurred. Especially the feet.

And as for the previous one, I think her nose is a little too big like the last one. (Great nose on this most recent one though.) :)

jaguar 06-20-2004 04:10 PM

I wanted the cahracter to be 'falling' obviously but the motion blur in pshop seems to be locked into doing both 'sides' so i'll clean it up manually.

York 06-21-2004 06:41 AM

Your "bitch" up-there is coool! But it took me a while to figure out if she was really young again or..? Her hair and image seem well aged, but her body got stuck! hahaha
