And what are we doing this fine Sunday?

I've been drinking Bailey's and coffee since noon...I have a pretty decent buzz going. At the moment, I'm waiting for Rho to get back with my Turkey Bacon Guacamole sandwich from Quizno's.

What's everyone else doing?

plthijinx 05-16-2004 01:45 PM

i'm watching the astros whip up on the mets. went to the game last night and forgot my camera. man i was miffed! had great seats! then in a little bit i have to go help my dad move some furniture from his office b/c he's retiring.....fun.

OnyxCougar 05-16-2004 01:53 PM

Working. I'm on yahoo and msn. Make my day interesting, huh?

elSicomoro 05-16-2004 01:58 PM

At the moment, I'm looking at apartments. Rho and I are looking to cut overhead and might make a move in September.

OnyxCougar 05-16-2004 02:37 PM

The testosterone laden males that I work with have been watching "Soap Opera for Men" (tm), aka Wrestling for months. Every Monday night and Thursday night, at 8pm, the tv behind me blares with the latest drama.

One Sunday a month, the phones go insane because people can't order the event. (Usually, this is because they havent paid their bill in 3 months. These are the same people that have the nerve to get pissed off at me because I can't "make the box work". Dumbasses.)

So this is the "Wrestling" Sunday. All new and different types of rednecks are on my phone wanting to order it. $49.95 to watch bad actors fake beat up other bad actors.

*sigh*

Beautiful weather here so down by the lake sipping coffees for most of the day with copies of the economist, few camera rags, few moterbike rags an old canon loaded with Tri-X and a Romeo Y Julieta No2.

Hey zippy you should archive the pr0n on a CD to save it... I mean, it's the neighborly thing to do!! Besides, blackmail opportunities....

I'm just hanging out... the kids are both at friends' houses, Mrs. Dallas is practicing her piano.

Edit: I forgot to ask, zippy, what did your neighbors do for you that you're going to such heroic lengths?? The only one I'll put out that kind of effort for is my dad.

elSicomoro 05-16-2004 03:11 PM

Buzz is now gone. The Turkey Bacon Guac sandwich was excellent. I should finish the laundry now.

I'd be disappointed to hear otherwise.

Well....its 45 minutes into the witching hour. I just got through watching a comedy video and drinking red wine with Ma...she's gone home, I have the house to myself and an early start tomorrow...now would probably be a good time to sleep....so naturally I thought I would log in here.

Today was one of those rarities in Yorkshire, a gorgeous sunny day. Spent much of it wandering about the calder valley with Pilau(my bearded collie dog) Found an excellent spot up on the ridge to sit and look out across the valley with a very long joint in one hand and a book about Anglo Saxon England in t'other....Dog lay across my feet panting .....very relaxing.

elSicomoro 05-16-2004 06:53 PM

I'm watching something on History International about Rome. The Sopranos is on in an hour. I should make dinner.

Heavy breakfast ham eggs cheese plus hash browns and off to Mass. Went to a friends house to see the new baby (absolutely perfect little girl) went mountain biking in some new territory with him very good riding and my rear wheel held up despite a broken spoke. Chilled over a Bass Ale in his new timber frame barn. Went home inhaled a bowl of cereal helped Pete with the yard work until she took a rode ride. Played ball with the youts and Grampie. Chowed on what we could find -sliced chicken with adobo sauce and lemon with guacomole and cheese in a corn tortilla and fresh asparagus right from the garden. Downloaded some Miles Davis and some Smithereens now what to sip while we listen?...

Clodfobble 05-16-2004 08:45 PM

My husband and I worked pretty hard and made some progress on the house today ("the house" being representative of all our many many projects to fix up this place.)

Filled four more bags of branches... wait, back up. When we bought the place, the previous owners had installed an aboveground pool, built this very cramped deck around it with a full height fence, planted a ton of shrubby tree things in the rest of the yard and then proceeded with the ever-popular "out of sight, out of mind" philosophy for the next 10 years or so. So when we bought it, we removed the fence around the deck (removing/rebuilding the rest of the deck probably won't happen until next fall), thus exposing the jungle the rest of the yard had become. We cut down a grand total of twelve treebush things (and left three still standing.) The pile of branches was probably around 15 feet by 10 feet, at least 6 feet tall. So now, day by day, we cut a few more into manageable pieces and cram them into lawn refuse bags so the garbage men will take them away.

Since that's backbreaking work though, and the temperatures are already in the upper 80s here, we alternated the yard work with installing the last pieces of laminate flooring in the kitchen and some small painting projects.

Now he's playing Final Fantasy X-2 and I'm feeling all that sweat dry into cakey nastiness as I briefly peruse the internet before taking a shower.

It sounds like you all had a more relaxing day than I did, but I feel pretty happy about our productivity.

OnyxCougar 05-16-2004 08:48 PM

I would rather feel tired and productive rather than tired and futile.

Hell yeah! I'll admit I'm pretty manic, though, when it comes to being productive. I'm one of those people who doesn't know how to relax. Fortunately I have tasks lined up for months to come, so I'm in no danger of finding myself with nothing to do.

Why don't you rent a chipper for a day and turn it all into mulch. Free mulch and it keeps it out of the trash stream.:)

We thought about that, but it'd cost around $200 to get a wood chipper out to our house, and we can't really afford it right now. Lawn refuse bags are a mere $0.50 each. :) The good news is, it's not going into the landfills--the special paper bags are separate, and get mulched by the city. They then sell this "Dillo Dirt" back to people for their gardens. :)

I came home at 4am after a hot dancing night, made some omlettes and went to bed at 5am. Slept till 12h30 and worked in the garden. Very nice weather and the neighbours invited me to have a little bbq till 16h. Packed my bag and took the train back to Brussels, talked the whole time with a beautiful young lady (but was to shy to ask her phone number). Back at the academy, shaved my hair and went to bed...

I spent most of my day riding from here to Marcus Hook, re-unfucking a friends' computer (I accidentally deleted a batch of his .mp3s and he made a royal mess trying to find them again).

In retaliation, I made him buy R-Undelete ($54.99), my gas ($10) and my dinner (<>$8 cheesesteak). Plus I got some more of his goat pr0n! hehe.. At this rate, he won't have any left.

Then I got to ride home and discovered that although it may be 70 in Phila, it was 50 in the Poconos! I was an icicle by the time I got home and it took me three tries to open my front door due to numbness in my hands! Next time, long johns and heavy gloves.

Tri-X eh? Wow, haven't uttered those words since photography classes (and even then, my choice of B&W film was T-Max 3200). I've heard that it's a pretty good film though...good for contrast, but just enough grain to give the shot just enough of a gritty feel. T-Max is more "warm" and soft in comparison...it was good for the portrait-type shots that I did in class and years later.

Ever worked with any other type of B&W film?

I haven't gone digital yet (can't afford it), and yet everything seems to be going in that direction.

I love Shutterbug magazine...is that one of your rags?

How old is the Canon? Mine is circa 1991 (EOS Rebel when Canon rebuilt it with a lighter body).

Whoops, once you get me talking about photography, I could go on for days...but I won't (at least in this thread..lol).

:D

jaguar 05-17-2004 11:25 AM

I love the grittyness of Tri-X, for me it is one of the few films that I feel I cannot emulate well digitally, thus I like playing with it. The camera is a veeeerrry (circa late 70s I think) old totally manual jobbie with a 50mm lens, it's not really mine but I am the first person to use it in years. Tri-X is pretty much the only thing I use with it. I'm kinda bassakwards with the film thing - early digital introduced me into photography and it's only more recently I've played a little more with film. Part of it is that with digital, once you've got the upfront (and admittedly far, far higher) costs out of the way, the pictures feel free, whereas with film I feel under pressue to get every shot perfect because it costs money to develop, thus I find I work far better with digital, partly because I can be as liberal as my memory cards will allow.

On the flipside I have moral qualms about digital manipulation. I refuse point blank to do any more than adjust contrast, balance and do a little cropping where needed and even that feels a tad wrong. With good RAW files you can do an incredible amount of manipulation in terms of colour balance, white balance and contrast.

One day, after I buy an island or two, I'd love to get my hands on a Leica rangefinder.

Rags are Popular Photography, Pratical Photography, American Photographer (i think that's the name, more recent discovery) and a french B&W mag I can never remember the name of.

Tri-X and Pan-X were the two that I remember most ... bought in bulk and hand-loaded into the cassettes. Only way to go.

Hard to find and harder to get developed these days.

As far as what I did today? Went to a Partylites™ Party. Partylites™ are the candle and candleholder equivalent of Tupperware. They are GREAT candles though. as close to pure paraffin as you can get. No metal in the wicks and their votives burn to liquid, which depending on the holder you are using can really add to the effect (I have these holders that look like wineglasses, so burning a deep red candle in them, it looks like a glass of wine on fire. Very pretty.)

Not too hard to find Tri-X at any major photography store, in England I deal with Jessops, big gear i'm buying from B&H Photo in the US - cheap and wonderful service.

I can dig that. I guess because I started out on film, I'm more partial to that format.

Indeed. While many photos have looked flawless thanks to digital technology, sometimes the no-so-perfect shots are cool too...character shots I call them.

Hmmm,......time to put some candles in DoDads.;)

I approach some guys taking pictures of bears in Denali Park. While trying to hide my paltry Nikon 6006 behind my back, I asked them how much the lenses, that looked like howitzers, they were using, cost. They laughed and said “You can’t buy these lenses, if you have the credentials, you can rent them” Damn.:eek3:

jaguar 05-17-2004 03:58 PM

The only lenses I can think of like that would be the HUGE Canon 1.3m super-tele lenses. Normal tele lenses from both canon and nikon go up to about 600mm, Canon is the only one I know of that does anything bigger but I know there is some ultra-sepcial stuff out there in the 100,000k+ range.

xoxoxoBruce 05-17-2004 04:09 PM

These were about a foot in diameter and 18 inches long. they mount directly to a heavy duty tripod and the camera body looks like a zit on the butt of the lens. I didn't bug them much because they were working on a sow bear and two cubs that were tearing up the alpine vegetation, chasing rodents. The bears were maybe a mile away across the ravine on the opposite slope.

Something like this I assume:

I don't think they've introduced an IS version of the bigger end yet, when they do that'll another two or so grand I'm sure. Canon does some bigger lenses than the ones that are listed there ladysyc but I've never even seen the on a pricelist.

Oh yes a Beardie. A beautiful chocolate/faun/blue Tricolor bearded collie with brown/faun the dominant colours:P(for any non beardie afficionados tricolors are quite rare inthe breed) Of course once he got past his puppyhood his colours faded to just a hint. ......I think I already mentioned in the thread abot not being cool that I have taught him to give high five.....I dont know on a scale of 1 to 10 how sad that actually is, but I am pitching a guess at 8......He has a wide range of understood words in his repertoire but most seem to be related to various kinds of cooked meat...chicken, sausages etc

wolf 05-18-2004 12:50 AM

One of our doctors just got a monster lens of frightening cost. I'll get details from him ASAP to further assist in the thread hijacking. He's looking forward to going to the Lakota Wolf Preserve in New Jersey (yes, there is such a thing) to use it.

He has this plan to utilize his dog as a means of carrying the lens during hiking excursions by putting it in a well-padded pack. The dog is usually placid enough that it shouldn't damage the lens by running willy nilly anywhere. That was the plan, anyway. He put the pack on the dog, it considered the situation quite carefully, and and laid down. It would not get up until the pack was removed.

He'll just have to strap the lens to his wife.
