Prison guards forbidden to wear protective gear
http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/Calgar...17/384816.html By DOUG BEAZLEY, SUN MEDIA EDMONTON -- Corrections Canada won't let guards at maximum security prisons wear stab-proof vests because it sends a confrontational "signal" to prisoners. "If you have that kind of presence symbolized by (a stab-proof vest), you're sending a signal to the prisoner that you consider him to be a dangerous person," said Tim Krause. |

What idiot thought that one up? So what signals are you sending without using the correct wear. It's a Max security prison most of the prisoners are dangerous persons,or do the prisons in Canada only hold reasonable convicts who would'nt hurt a fly. |
Victimless criminals!

Another example of the people making the rules are not the one suffering the consequences of them.:(

How about prohibiting private citizens from owning bulletproof vests?
|
Even if they were wearing vests someone could stab/shoot them in the arm/leg/head! I reckon the only way to go is full head-to-toe steel reinforced protective armour. Or lose the guards, get robots to deal with the prisoners. Human contact is too dangerous. Shit! Did something move? Shoot it, dammit!

You have all the material you need. Now, assimilate it, converge it, understand it, and then retaliate without really thinking about it. Actually don't, I've just done it for you.

Most wounds are to the torso, so the vest is a valid measure. The very fact that they were put on in the first place means someone, somewhere was stabbed at a prison, thus validating, again, said protective device. If the prisoners have their feelings hurt by someone wanting to protect themselves from a likely threat then that's just too bad. |

Body Armor is a purely defensive item but, regardless, we are very sensitive to the possibility of vests being misused by criminals. By buying a vest from us, you certify that you are a law-abiding adult with no felony convictions (we do not sell to felons or minors, and it is against the law for a felon to possess Body Armor in California.) We cooperate with law enforcement to stop the use of vests by criminals. If you have any criminal purpose in mind (or resell your armor to a criminal) you do NOT want to have bought Body Armor from us! (See our Privacy Commitment) We reserve the right to refuse to sell to anyone, in our sole discretion. By buying body armor you guarantee that you are not legally prohibited from owning firearms or body armor and also that you are not associated with any criminal group, in any way, and have only a lawful self-defense purpose for owning body armor. Shipping Level III and IV armor plates outside the United States of America requires a U.S. State Department export permit. Level II-A, Level II and Level III-A Body Armor may require a Department of Commerce export license. It is the SOLE responsibility of the purchaser to ensure that all transactions conform to US and local Federal, State and Local Statutes, Codes, and Ordinances. |

If only we could start whacking the violent offenders instead of giving them free room and board for a period of time, then we wouldn't need body armor for guards.
We call them prison guards not room valets. the guests in these facilities are there for a reason. I can't believe politicians and lawyers are worried about hurting prisoners' precious little feelings. |
There is some basis to the saying "treat them like animals and they will act like animals." Perhaps the wearing of the vests incites more violent outbreaks. I watched a show on Court TV recently about how a deliberate massive increase in the number of *female* guards at one prison has caused violence to unbelievably plummet.
Nonetheless, that just means they should find a way to disguise the vests while they wear them. |

I suspect most female prison guards have more to prove and do so early on to maintain order.
|
In the program they were suggesting that the prisoners spent so much time just chatting and lightly flirting with the guards that they didn't bother to antagonize one another. They all wanted to look good in front of the ladeeeez.
|
That effect probably disappeared shortly after the researchers left ... following a honeymoon period of something under a month, the prisoners figure out that although there are female CO's, they are just as big dicks as the men.
