Chat?

Why doesn't the cellar have chat like some other boards do?

elSicomoro 04-29-2004 06:01 AM

We do have chat...it's called AOLIM. :)

SteveDallas 04-29-2004 08:27 AM

Wait, so you're saying I could add all you folks to IM and then we could waste each other's time immediately, instead of with 5 or 10 minute delays???

wolf 04-29-2004 11:35 AM

Yes, it's very effective.

SteveDallas 04-29-2004 11:51 AM

I shall have to try it then. Hmmm....

wolf 04-29-2004 12:09 PM

It's a phenomenal method for simulating sociability, without the actual need to be social.

Like Bender said in The Breakfast Club ... "It's demented and sad, but social."

SteveDallas 04-29-2004 12:34 PM

Reminds me of what one of our professors told me after I gave a presentation to a large group... "You do a very good impression of an extrovert."

Undertoad 04-29-2004 02:03 PM

All I know is that whenever I enter into a chat session, I immediately think about how slow and dreary it'll be and how long it'll be. I mean, imagine you sitting there waiting, waiting, waiting while I write this post. It would drive you fuckin' nuts! I can't be waiting for people to type as a part of my social interaction.

lumberjim 04-29-2004 02:39 PM

especially when they're typing with one hand, you perv ;)

Not mine, you won't.:p

elSicomoro 04-29-2004 06:17 PM

You shouldn't use IM anyway, Bruce...you already waste enough people's time with your posts. :D

xoxoxoBruce 04-30-2004 03:39 AM

Aww, you mudder wears combat boots.:p

wolf 04-30-2004 10:53 AM

Why would syc put combat boots on a racehorce. I don't get it.

Depends on the room. I find chat to be faster for direct interaction. In fact, I have my dialysis room chat up now, and it goes by pretty fast. The only thing is when you are down to like 2-3 people, and then yes, it gets slow (but that's the convo, and not the server).

At any rate, to each his/her own. Just a thought: I think it would add to the Cellar to have a kick ass chatroom, but that's just a thought.

xoxoxoBruce 04-30-2004 03:47 PM

Christ, we can't even keep a thread on track, imagine how convoluted a chat would become.:haha:

For the same reason you and Bruce put your asshats on every day.

You know, I actually forgot I posted this question (I really do have mild neurological damage - I completely blanked this one. I'm always making interesting discoveries like this - ever see the movie "Memento"? Well, that's me, but thankfully to a lesser degree. I learned from it to write important notes on my hands, though. But I digress.) Anyhow, you'd have to IM every member who was on the board at the moment to have an actual chat, wouldn't you? Another board I visit has a one hour weekly chat and its a great free for all. Not like the cr-p on AOL or Yahoo or one of those either. Its pretty fast paced, too. Anyhow, it was just a thought...

jaguar 05-02-2004 01:35 PM

Not sure about AIM but I know MSN has group chat.

DanaC 05-02-2004 01:39 PM

I dont think I could cope with RADAR in realtime..........:boxers:

wolf 05-02-2004 03:27 PM

Whenever there are more than three cellarites online who know each other's IM screennames, we usually end up chatting by creating a private chatroom and inviting everybody.

I think we've had as many as 7 participants.

And yes, there is still an ignore button ...

perth 05-02-2004 03:35 PM

What do most people use? AIM?

wolf 05-02-2004 03:48 PM

I think AIM is the more popular of the two, at least that's what we've done more of our chats in over the last year or two.

I use both AIM and Yahoo Messenger.

I have an MSN Messenger account, but hardly anyone I know bothers with them. Especially since they started demanding that you pay to enter public chat rooms.

perth 05-02-2004 03:55 PM

I might pick up an AOLIM account, but I'm sure "Perth" is already taken and if I have to add a string of random numbers to my name THEN IMM GONA HAEV 2 CHANGE MAH STYL3 OF WRITNG!11! OMG WTF

But as long as I have this then I guess it's not that big a deal.

DanaC 05-02-2004 04:02 PM

I only use ICQ...

perth 05-02-2004 04:08 PM

Last time I installed ICQ on my computer, it dragged me outside, beat me senseless and set me on fire.

Well, maybe not that, so much, but it really did bring my system to it's knees. It was soaking huge amounts of RAM, nearly killing a computer that was on it's last legs anyway. I just couldn't imagine why a chat app demanded so much of my poor little machine.

Really? I didnt know it was using up lots of RAM....

perth 05-02-2004 05:02 PM

Maybe it doesn't anymore. Used to tho.

SteveDallas 05-02-2004 05:02 PM

I'm relatively new to this, but I'm been trying out Trillian. It lets you be on AOL IM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ, and IRC all at once. So far it seems to work great.

DanaC 05-02-2004 05:22 PM

Trillion.....Trillion......wasnt Zaphod's chick called Trillian in Hitchhikers guide?

elSicomoro 05-02-2004 05:24 PM

ICQ is the first IM I used...used it all the time from 1997-1999. Then the later versions were more RAM dependent and just didn't work on my old puter that well. With my newer puter, it works like a champ. But most of the people I used to chat with on ICQ are gone now.

AOLIM is the main one I use now. It's probably the easiest IM system to use.

I've been using Yahoo more recently, though I've had it for years. Voice is easier to use on YIM, and I like the customizing that you can do to it.

AIM now supports ICQ ... and shares info with the ICQ servers. I've chatted with Sidhe and Troubleshooter who both use ICQ while I'm on AOL IM.

Yeah, it was inevitable once AOL bought ICQ.

One of the issues with ICQ is the ad banners, but the right unauthorized patch and the problem is solved.

jaguar 05-03-2004 12:04 AM

Just use trillian if you have a PC. If you have a mac use Fire, excellent multi-IM client and it's open-source to boot.

BrianR 05-03-2004 09:29 AM

I normally only use YIM, screen name newbrianrem2

OnyxCougar 05-03-2004 06:03 PM

I don't have aol or aim, but I do have msn and yahoo. I used to have icq and aim, but I didn't want alot of crap on my brand new baby.

yahoo: phyriantia
msn: phyriantia@cox.net

OnyxCougar 05-11-2004 01:35 PM

*sigh* I broke down and got em...

aol: phyriantia
icq: 273797496

wolf 05-11-2004 01:43 PM

You might want to check out trillian ... one program to bind them all, basically. You'll lose the cool functionality of the new Beta YahooIM, though.

OnyxCougar 05-11-2004 02:20 PM

Nah, I'll keep my avatar and audibles. Buh bye now! Buh bye!
