GA bans "special" piercings

I saw this over on Fark, too. Further proof that government reps in Georgia must all be well over sixty and live in a cave.

GA Bans Female Genital Piercings

Rep. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, was slack-jawed when told after the vote that some adults seek the piercings.

Bill Heath must not watch much television.

Interesting there is nothing in the bill banning the same for men.

Beestie 03-25-2004 10:17 AM

Georgia is as Georgia does.

Now I know what I'll find when I look up backwards in the dictionary.

The laws we always laughed at when I lived there was that assault rifles (yes, yes, I know -- don't argue with me on the definition of this) were perfectly okay to have while "marital aids" were outlawed in the state. The only place this was not true was the city of Atlanta, where the rules were inverted. The "fun zone" was where the Atlanta metro area and the rest of Georgia were blurred together. That is an area where things got a little... strange. You'd have subdivisions of of $1.5mil homes that ended up right down the street from a farm feed store. "Violent clash of cultures" was an understatement.

But no redneck/white trash jokes from any of you! The area in and around Pittsburgh proved to be far worse in that respect than a most of the places I've been to in the South.

Female genital mutilation is a real problem. While it is sometimes called 'circumcision' , part or all of the clitoris is removed, not a piece of skin. Many of the subjects are underage and do not give what most people would consider informed consent.

Apparently, piercings somehow got mixed into the situation. I have no problem with piercings, although some body piercings, IMO, should be performed by a surgeon if there is a chance of severe bleeding, if there will be drilling through bone, etc.

IMO, if a 20-year-old woman wants an 'earring' on her labia, that's her business. Having a 13-year-old girl dragged in by her relatives to have her clitoris hacked off is something entirely different.

Female genital mutilation

Most definitely. I don't feel like digging the article up, but a guy in New York was prosecuted for using a pair of scissors to remove his young daughters outer labia.

This is a fucked up time at the Cellar I think, not in a bad way per se. I don't know much of the long term history of the Cellar but here we are discussing some of the most alarming things going on in the world.

Suicide bombers, genital mutilation, declining freedoms, lying gov't here and abroad, the benefits of bombing the shit out of other cultures...

I need a drink.

This discussion came up once in a class in which we were discussing cultures and the role of the female, etc, etc. When I hear of female genital mutilation, I think of some third world country in Africa. Hearing that it happens in the US is new to me.

What religions demand this? It sounds horrific, but oddly enough circumcision does not. Hmm.

No, that just means we're back to normal here.

I guess it's a spike since I've been here. Or maybe I'm just being sensitive.

And who the fuck are you to say what is appropriate for ADULT women to do?? If they want to pierce their pussy, then they should be allowed to do so. I sure as hell wouldn't do it, but I also wouldn't stop a grown woman from doing so. :rar:

Torrere 03-26-2004 11:49 PM

The title of the Excite article was misleading. As of the time that article was published, it had not yet been ratified in the Senate, nor passed into law.

The original bill was set up to ban female genital mutilation, regardless of it's being part of a religious or cultural heritage. It followed a story wherein a woman discovered, when she took her daughter to a doctor, that her daughter had been circumcised without the mother's knowledge.

While the bill was in the House, Bill Heath tacked on an amendment banning genital piercings.

Some people are lying here -- maybe the news reporters, maybe the *cough* Honorable Mr. Heath.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
Quote:

"The original intent of the amendment was to make illegal the voluntary piercing of female genitalia for decorative purposes," said Rep. Bill Heath (R-Bremen).
...
"I just don't think it's appropriate," Heath said.
...
Heath said he doesn't support male genital piercings, but won't draft legislation to address the issue.
That's pretty far from being "slack-jawed when told after the vote that some adults seek the piercings."

What’s disturbing is instead of discussing possible worse case scenarios, we’re discussing them as they actually play out.:(

Happy Monkey 03-27-2004 07:55 AM

Well, the quote in the original article is:
Quote:

"What? I've never seen such a thing," Heath said. "I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing."
So the Atlanta Journal-Constitution could have cut out the first part of the quote.

some would argue they're not so much decorative as...pratical?

Elspode 03-28-2004 02:50 PM

Does this bill outlaw one piercing oneself, or merely having someone else do it for a fee, for free, or for fun?

I find it difficult to see how self-piercing could be made illegal, or how it could be enforced.

wolf 03-28-2004 05:10 PM

I find it difficult to see how one could piece one's own clitoris.

It's not the sort of thing you should be doing in a mirror.

(I happen to think it's not the sort of thing one should be doing with the help of a so-called "professional" either, but I am old and unhip. Yes, I've had people tell me why they are wonderful. It's not worth the potential hassles.)

BrianR 03-28-2004 10:13 PM

for the record, clitoral piercing is extremely rare due to the potential loss of sensation. You all are more likely referring to a clitoral HOOD piercing, yes?

Also, speaking as someone who used to sound much like wolf until I had a "special" piercing done in a moment of madness. Six weeks later, Lil Elvis forgave me and the reviews have been enthusiastic.

But then again, I'm a guy and a Penna resident, therefore not subject to the backwards hillbillies that appear to be running the GA House.

There is something significantly not right in the world when your departmental secretary IMs you to tell you about her new nipple piercings.

She's 50.

We think this (and other behavior) is the expression of her midlife crisis.

I just told her she wasn't allowed to call off from work today because her tits hurt. It's her own damn fault.

I think the ladder ones look coolest. And I agree with Rho... what I want to do to my labia and clit are my business.

I don't need a man I never met telling me what I can and can't do with my genitals.

I don't know, I was just responding to the gender bias OC was throwing around. *ducks*

Although an interesting idea occured to me.

I find it interesting that they pass a bill like that in Women's History Month.

Right, but there are 180 members and we don't know who wasn't there or abstaining.
