Collectibles
Bruce, I know has the most comprehensive collections of doodads i've seen outside of a museum but what do the rest of you collect?
I'm an 80's child and have never really advanced. I collect any and all vinyl, mainly because I make bulk purchases to get at one or two specific albums which get played through, of course, 80's hi-fi equipment. So, anything specific or was it all aired in the doodad thread? |
Books. Lots and lots of books. Far more than I'll ever read. I need to do some serious dumping.
|
Books, weapons, books about weapons ....
Crafting kits and supplies Moose Videotape (now DVDs) Videogames Dumb shit you find at point-of-sale in convenience stores and supermarkets And every now and again I'll get obsessively attached to something ... tv show or whatever, and get a bunch of related crap that I really don't need. Anybody know what the asking price for a Xena Lunchbox is these days? |

Oh yeah, I figured books was pretty much a given in this joint.
Kinda like food/check, booze/check/, ISP bill paid/check, book/check |
Except that the books are at the head of the list. Okay, maybe AFTER the ISP, but only sightly.
Clarification on Moose. I do not currently have sufficient space available to collect actual moose. I collect an assortment of icons of moose including teeshirts, sweatshirts, stuffed animals, pictures, craft kits, keychains, ceramic figurines, action figures, coffee mugs, photographs, stickers, stationery, etc. etc. etc. Moose. |

Marvin the Martian items. Like Wolf, i really don't have space to collect much more Marvin stuff. However, I think that this fact points out just how critical my lack of space really is since most Marvin stuff is relatively small.
To some extent, I also collect Parrish prints, Vargas prints, oil lamps and synthesizers. (side bar note: I *always* have more room for synthesizers, no matter how large, so if you have one or more you'd like to be rid of, I'm the guy to talk to). Oh...and books and DVDs. |
plants (outdoor ones)
strange old tassels. thermi (particularly plaids) corks wierd things made of wire. (this is a new field) votive things, lil' icons, religious or luck charms, milagros, etc. beads buttons strange and delightful advertizing/promo objects. handmade scissors pennies Russian cut birch objects Things shaped like leaves yarn handwoven textiles rocks I like diner china Images that show dishes, pots and pans animated, with limbs. fortune cookie fortunes (only wierd ones or really close to home ones) artwork when I can afford it- ceramics, prints and paintings. I forgot: suitcases. |
Warch- Firstly, HOLY CRAP!!
Secondly, what is/are thermi, Russian cut birch objects? |
Thermi: more than one Thermos. ('twas obvious to me).
Do you only collect the Thermos™ Brand, or will any vacuum bottle do? And yes, I collect both realistic and cartoon versions, including Bullwinkle, the Moose from Northern Exposure (deceased), Montgomery "Good News" Moose (from the briefly-lived "Get-Along Gang" that was supposed to teach cooperative behavior to amoral and out-of-control children in the 80s) and others. No, I do not have a Thidwick, but I know who he is. The stuffed moose do include a Beanie Baby (one of four or five total that I own ... two moose, one shark, and the macaw. I'm not sure if I own the Rocket the Bluejay or if I just gave that one to a friend's kid), as well as a Gund moose. I had tried collecting Kangaroos at one point, but that didn't really work out. |
I had tried collecting Kangaroos at one point, but that didn't really work out. Sure. I know what you mean. They can be difficult, sneaky.:)
Do you only collect the Thermos™ Brand, or will any vacuum bottle do? I'm fond of glass interior, metal exteriors. I enjoy a variety of stopper technologies. Cups add points. I have some Aladdin. The Russian Birch stuff is....Great! Ah, I gotta go work. more later. |
Fair go. Shouldn't that be thermii-then twould be obvious.
How do you do that elevated tm? It's probably just as well you skipped 'roo collection (we call 'em 'roos down under mate). As the second most popular tourism consumable there's thousands of almost identical variants on the market. |
Fair go. Shouldn't that be thermii-then twould be obvious.
Only to people with an education. ;) You know we Americans play hell with the language. How do you do that elevated tm? Character Map is our friend (the code is ALT-0153. Hold down the ALT key and while doing so type the 0153 on the numeric keypad.) The trademark sign is one of the few codes I have memorized, or can fumble around to reproduce, and it's all The Cellar's fault, since I had to spell Asshat™ properly ... I also use the occasional M-dash, degree mark, and bold dot. It's probably just as well you skipped 'roo collection (we call 'em 'roos down under mate). As the second most popular tourism consumable there's thousands of almost identical variants on the market. They are only widely available in a store near YOU. 'Roos never quite took off in the US as a collectible like a lot of other creatures like Unicorns, Dolphins, and Dragons. |
Thanks Mate ™
If you want Roos™ just say so. I'll make it so. |
Damn work...anyways, Moose!
I saw a documentary once about an earnest Canadian woman named Giselle who studied moose. She would go out into the field and mimic their antler antics, commune with them. It was strange, wonderous and yet hilarious to watch. |
Sounds important
|
Thank you, novice, for your kind offer. If I ever move to a big enough place for adding a collection of roos, I'll let you know.
|
Sounds important
Giselle thought so, not sure how the moose felt about it. |
Importance-Earnest-sigh
|
I have a fondness for Mrs. Malaprop, too.
|
Nice lady, arguably paved the way for Dubya.;)
|
...and me. I've got my plays (amongst other things) all mixed up and cerfuddled. But I'm very earnest about it. truly.

No argument here:cool:

Books - specifically on:
* vampires (fic and non-fic, though I had to slow down on fic when they became much too friggin' popular) * Sherlock Holmes * fairy-fantasy (Charles de Lint & Co) Bats. And (sporadically) carnivorous plants. |
Why old tassels?
Hmmmmm.good question. My favorite ones are from India. 1. They are beautiful. 2. Many are of cool, complex construction. 3. They move. 4. They are unappologetic ornament. And I agree that bats are cool. I have a bat house, empty though. Fraid my property is too open to draw any inhabitants. Maybe...this year. I can no longer spell....well, never could actually. |

The Help Wanted ads in Alaska must make for some interesting reading:
"Wanted - Moose poop collector. Must be willing to follow constipated moose through underbrush for considerable distance. Bags and gloves provided. Pay commensurate with experience." "Wanted - Experienced individual to sell Alaska's most sought-after novelty items. High markup, easy sale line of deluxe ruminant digestive byproducts in clever reconfigurations. Send resume to iwannasellmoosepoop@bigpiles.com ." |

Friend of mine went to Alaska. She hooked me up GOOD. She also made a side trip to Washington State ... went to Roslyn, got me some Northern Exposure stuff including mugs, teeshirts, and a photo of the actual moose, then on to Snoqualmie Falls for a Twin Peaks extravaganza. |
School for Scandal-that's it! Got my period Brit romantic comedy pieces mixed. :)

OK then, yes Wolf, I'll have a drink.:)

I don't know if I deliberately collect them per se, but I suffer from a complete inability to throw away old magazines. I still have Ranger Ricks from when I was 8, random Time magazines with other people's names on the mailing label, half the National Geographics published from 1979 forward, a whole slew of guitar magazines that had some song I wanted to learn, a muzzleloader periodical (just one issue from 1992), a metric ton of Road & Tracks, video game mags, bowhunting mags, the Guns & Ammo buyers guide from 1997, even a bunch of weird "I live in the country, here's some pictures of pigs and some recipes" mags that my mom subscribed to.
Absolutely useless from a collectible standpoint, but useful as part of a study of borderline obsessive-compulsive disorder, perhaps. |
i collect keyrings, and have since i was 5 or 6.
not stupid ones with things written on them, but from places or of things, i have the complete snow white dwarfs set, little shoes, little phones, hats, animals, buildings, places, smilies, dummies, different colours and textures i have hundreds. i have show boards for them all but at the moment they are all joined together to make a rope of keychains that is metres long. but i only have two keys. |
Zippos. Actually, lighters in general. Too bad I don't smoke or they might prove useful.
The biggest thing I collect: anything dealing with foxes. Pictures, paintings, statues, etc. My room appears as if it were a shrine to them. |
Books--about anything and everything.
Stones-- rough crystals, geodes, agates, and rocks with interesting colors and patterns. |
Books, and stamps from other countries.
|
Fish. 27 of em. 4 tanks for about a total of 180 gallons.

Wow -- someone's got a fetish. :p
|
It isn't the fact that you have so many different kinds of tape that disturbs me. It is the fact that you have it all in one box, and know where it all is.
|
Well, I make stuff with it, so I gotta know where it is.
|
OK, so it's only semi-anal.:haha:
|
I'm tricky that way. I show you the one thing in my condo that's organized, and come off all neat and tidy. :)

Through my old place of employment I can identify most of your tape.I had a collection similar to yours.I love my 3m c-40 dispenser.Yours is an older model?I also don't see one of my favorite tools of all time. The h-122 2' dispenser. And am I seeing book-sealing tape (left side of box, clear with a red starting band)? Damn.I need a life. |

Yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yah!
*bows* thank you. :) And yes, I have the sword. When I find batteries for the camera to take a picture of the keychain, I'll snap a few of it too. |

I actually need some copper tape and can't find any! It's for shielding the internal electronics cavity of a bass. Specialty online music stores will sell it by the inch. Why else do they sell copper tape, some plumbing thing?
