2/4/2004: Record-setting pasta

http://cellar.org/2004/pastarecord.jpg

No I did NOT plan a day two of record-setting food, but when I saw this one I figured it had to be IotD today, to keep the string going, so to speak.

These folks are in Germany, participating in "Falkensee Pasta Week" and they have created the longest noodle ever.

(snicker)

They actually have a whole strand of noodles, and it's 50 meters long. This required a mere 250 eggs, 110 lbs (50 kg) of flour and a bit of water.

Apparently the guy on the end didn't get the memo about wearing gloves when you pick up your area of pasta for the picture. What a faux pas.

wolf 02-04-2004 11:59 AM

He probably didn't wear gloves to make it, either.

FileNotFound 02-04-2004 11:59 AM

Gloves, no gloves..who cares?

You'd boil it before eating anyway...

Pi 02-04-2004 12:09 PM

Oh please stop it. It 7pm over here
I came back from some 10km cross-country and I have to wait 1 more hour until I can go an catch something to eat!

glatt 02-04-2004 12:10 PM

How do you eat it? Put one end in your mouth and suck like crazy.

Pi 02-04-2004 12:13 PM

with some bolognese on it. should be messy to clean everything up...

wolf 02-04-2004 12:37 PM

Has no one keyed onto the absurdity of the Germans making the world-record pasta? Spaetze, yah. Kartoffelsalat, yah. a giant sauerbraten or rolladen, coolness.

Or did they just want to flip the bird at the Italians again for not holding the Southern Borders?

FileNotFound 02-04-2004 12:47 PM

Germans make the best soups...I miss those soups...and the wine.

dar512 02-04-2004 01:13 PM

Next up: World's record bucket-o-beer. Made in Venice.

catch something, gollum?

fishing? trapping? people throw food at you a lot?

clarify....

oh, 10k cross country skiing? i thought you were in the UK....whre do you ski?

Nothing But Net 02-04-2004 02:43 PM

50 METERS?

That can't be right. More like 500 meters at least, if all the pasta you see on the table belongs to one long strand.

glatt 02-04-2004 04:17 PM

Good catch, Net.
It's at least 500 meters. There are 7 rows of pasta. The table looks to be about 5 meters long at least. Maybe even as much as ten. Hard to tell with the forshortening. And I can count at least a dozen strands of noodles in each row. I bet it's more like 20 per row.
7x5x12=420 meters (conservatively)
7x10x20=1400 meters (stretching it)

I bet it's about 700 meters.

Pi 02-04-2004 04:21 PM

Yeah right Lumberjim...
just some missunderstandings...
I'm not living in UK but in Brussels Belgium and no skiing (I'd love to but we have over 15 celcius over here) but real running through a big forest.
I ambushed a chinese take-away and got me some fried shrimps and some pork with rice... Yummmmi
Feel free to ask further details about my bowel movement (looked it up in my dictionnary, strange word, but I didn't want to use shit) and how I slept... ;)

Leah 02-04-2004 05:53 PM

The poor kid at the front of the photo, his gloves are way to big for him. You would think they could have organised a smaller pair of gloves for him to wear. It looks like he is concentrating so so hard not to drop his end of the pasta.:worried:

xoxoxoBruce 02-04-2004 06:07 PM

I believe it's called a noodle as it comes out of the machine. It's divided into a bunch of strands, but just one noodle. Don't argue with the pasta nazis.:p
By the kid's left hand is the end of one table and the beginning of the next.

Cool - I'm in Brussels too (originally from the UK...).
It's a great city to live in actually, small, but with everything you need, and pretty chilled out & relaxed as well!

Still there? I mean in Brussels... Do you know the Harry Canary Pub? And the Bock and Dragon? Just near Schuman... That's where I'm staying!
Have a lot of fun in a beautiful city!

Erm yes - I live just north (3 minutes walk) of Parc du Cinquantenaire. My bus to/from work drives right past the Bok and Dragon (and it's Hairy Canary isn't it?) every day (number 61...) :)

Cool!

Pi 02-05-2004 05:26 PM

It is, you're right. Well I live about 2 seconds from CInquantenaire. The big building made of red bricks and sand-stone : the Royal Military Academy. If tomorrow, you see some one running through the parc at 8 am it could be me ;)

Timeless 02-05-2004 06:15 PM

Heh - enjoy your run - I'll either be waiting at my bus stop, or already at work...I've always hated running - give me a concept2 any time, I prefer to do my exercise sitting down. :)

lumberjim 02-05-2004 07:01 PM

I, for one, only run when being chased.

...and not many people chase me.

Pi 02-06-2004 12:21 AM

I'm not that tall or that strong. I never was... So I learned to run and run fast. And by the way I'm on my way to become a recce-infanterist. It's my job to walk fast an to run. I love it. An women love my sexy atheltic legs and my butt hard as granit ;)

xoxoxoBruce 02-06-2004 06:07 PM

What's a, "recce-infanterist"?

Pi 02-07-2004 03:34 AM

A little complicated... The luxembourgish army only has infantery. But we are such a small army that we can't just do normal infantery stuff. So we specialised in reconnaissance. And that's why I'm a recce-infanterist.

Thank God you cleared that up.

I was starting to think you were a peanut-butter-cup-loving pedophile.

Timeless 02-07-2004 07:18 AM

Heh - I didn't even realise that Luxembourg had an army! :P

Pi 02-07-2004 08:17 AM

There's this joke :
The luxembourgish PM is visiting the german chancellor and so they go and visit the crisis-center of the german government. And so they show the PM what they gonna do in case of war or catastrophies : attack by Poland engage 2 divisions, attack by Austria engage 1 division, attack by France engage this and that, and so... The PM is rather impressed and at the end of the visit he asks : "Take the hypothetical case that Luxembourg would attack Germany, what would you do?" So the germans go on looking for a plan but the computer finds nothing, they check all their maps and find nothing. Then one of them finds a piece of paper in a drawer. It says : In the case of an attack by Luxembourg engage the firefighters of Treves (small town on the luxembourgish-german border).

Nerollss 02-13-2004 04:20 PM

That would be too much pasta!!!

xoxoxoBruce 02-14-2004 05:49 PM

No, there can never be too much pasta.:D
Welcome to the Cellar, Nerollss.
