The Scribbler

I found this interesting flash-based drawing tool online a few months ago, and I had completely forgotten about it until I was browsing through my images and found a few screen captures of the drawings I'd done with it.

It's called The Scribbler. At first, you use the mouse to draw something-- anything-- with basic lines, and when finished, you click the "Done Drawing" button, and the engine re-draws your image with random "scribbles." You can control the scribbling line width, color, etc (using set or random values), and create some nifty effects. There's a large gallery on the site, with some cool stuff in it.

Here's a few samples of what I did with it awhile back, I'll probably fart around with it later today and see what I can come up with:

hot_pastrami -- that is a damn neat tool. I wish I understood the algorhythm it uses to select what paths it takes, as the lines it adds truly add more substance to what you draw. Very cool.

Well, the algorithm seems pretty simple, really... the results just look complex. Each "scribbler" point starts at a random pint on the path you defined with your drawing. It then calculates all of the possible points it can jump to on the defined path which are within N pixels (where N is the adjustable "scribbliness" setting), and randomly selects one. It then draws a line between the current point and the randomly selected point using the settings currently defined for the line (thickness, color, transparency). It then repeats that process from this new point. Occasionally, each scribbler is moved to a new random point on the path, so that otherwise unreachable "islands" won't be left unscribbled.

Pretty simple, but it creates a cool effect.

It's supposed to be a dude's face... in a pained screaming expression. I can't see where you're finding a seahorse, or a dragon. But of course my eyes are biased towards what I was attemptiong to draw.

Imagine the eye is a face pointing the other way.

wow..it's like that sillhouette of candlesticks/two faces pick...you have a little escher in ya.....

now, here's a little help with what I saw. if i look at it as a face, it's obscene, but i REALLY didn't mean it like that....

Ah, I see it now. I had to look for a few seconds, and blur my eyes. Wait... I mean... that was intentional, eh! Damn I'm good.

The dual image still occurs with the cow-eunuch added, though as you say, it's a bit on the racey side. And not in a pleasant way. Ugh. I'll have to eat a whole can of Ajax to get that image out of my brain.

Jim. Lay off the crack. Seriously.

Well, be sure to post some images once you've tinkered with it.

Anybody else farted around with it yet? What did you end up with?

This will kind of go nicely with bruce's ...

(I'm not really artistically inclined when it comes to things like drawing, and particularly with a mouse.)

hot_pastrami 01-30-2004 03:56 PM

Damn, this thing is nice for when I need a 4-5 minute distraction from work. Here's another product of boredom, "Still Life."

I did a complex image, which I didn't like. Then I drew a simple spiral. Scribble turned it into an Escher-like strip. When you look at it and try to follow the lines they don't seem to make sense.

Lady Sidhe 02-03-2004 03:25 PM

Hey, how do you save your drawing?

Sidhe

lumberjim 02-03-2004 03:30 PM

shift, print screen.

open photoshop

ctrl v

crop

save

upload

Lady Sidhe 02-03-2004 03:38 PM

I tried the print screen thingy, and it didn't work..

Sidhe

lumberjim 02-03-2004 03:40 PM

then you should give up.

it says right on the site that there is no native way to save your pic.

maybe you could get your digital camera out and actually take a picture of your monitor?

Try holding the Alt key, than tap PrintScreen. Then, as Jimbo suggested, open any graphics app and Go to Edit > Paste. Crop, Save, viola.

This is all assuming you are using Windows, of course. If it doesn't work, you probably have a faulty PrintScreen key or something.
