Moose cam
A virtual friend of mine set up her camera to record the moose that she feeds in her yard. She's way up in the mountains around Park City Utah. They've been having a lot of snow this years.
http://home.velocitus.net/bsprings/Index.html There are two males that stay around. The one with the bigger rack is Primo (he's the boss) and the smaller one is Ferdinand. They tend to hang together although Moose tend to be solitary. |

Cool. I see one of them out there now.
It's comin' right for us!
That's great. I got the same picture then the moose moved over in the next one. On the next refresh the moose had lay down half out of the picture to the left.:)
He's snoozing there now! The one that guy put up looks like a horse though.
I think the cam is down for the night and that was just the last image before it went dark.
Pook has a couple of feeders - manger like things - set up in that area so what you see in the horse-like pose is the moose with his head down eating. |
Ah, 2 meeses.:D

The one on the right is Primo, he's got the bigger rack.
Here's another view |
THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL I CAN'T STAND IT!
I am jealous of your friend. very jealous.....and look at all the lumber! |
You should see her house.
You're warped LJ. That's not lumber, that's forest. Forest and meat. ;)
very cool use of a webcam.. ;)
hmmm... she's feeding the moose when they come to her yard ... is that a great idea... or even legal? (not to be the total bastard poster... ;) ) |
I think the legal issue goes something like "this is my property, I can put stuff on it if I want. If the meese come and eat it, how am I supposed to stop them? They're meese!"
She's two miles from the closest year round house. No one cares if she feeds them. The only thing I worry about is that they get too tame and decide to trample her to get to the food she is carrying to them. Actually, these two would have normally gone to a lower elevation by now to have better browse but because she feeds them they camp out in her yard.
Why wouldn't it be legal for her to feed them? Unless she was baiting them for hunting that is. |

Pook's cool toy
Great. Now slang is going to want one.
(I'm happy with the mooses. I love mooses.) |
This must be a reflection of the camera in the window.:)
Yep, that is what it is. She forgot to freeze the last frame before dark so we get a look inside her study.

Friends
They are waiting for her to come out and feed them. When they start looking to the left (I think), that means they see her in the house chopping up apples.
Apples? Chopped up? I thought she was just giving them hay. What is she feeding them? And how much?
They get 4 apples each and something called TACO.
In addition to the hay?
And TACO is an acronym for...?
TACO is a mix of hay and other stuff. TACO is a complete feed formulated from timothy hay, alfalfa hay, corn and oats.
It is used for horses http://www.lmffeeds.com/lmf_taco.html |

I finally managed to get a look at moosecam during daylight when the guys were actually active!
This is VERY COOL INDEED ... |
Looks warmer than it is here.:haha:
Probably not but at least the snow is dry and easy to move.
You said they watch the house in anticipation as mealtime approaches. I was wondering if they move away from the feeding spot when she goes out with the food, or stand right there while it's delivered? Also, do they ever come closer to the house between or prior to feedings? Have they rung the doorbell yet?:D
Pook says that sometimes they stay put and it sort of frightens her. In fact sometimes when they see her come out they move towards her. It is hard since she is on snowshoes and can't move all that fast. Sometimes she takes the snocat out to deliver the food because it is loud and gets them to move back into the trees.
She's had them eat out of her hand (apple) but doesn't like to do that often or if both are there. She's had them come up and stand in her open garage or put their noses on the glass of the back door. They are very interested in food and have gotten pretty damned tame. |
That's a good plan, re: the snowcat, but I'll tell you what: If they got it into their heads that they were pissed off about something, that little snowcat wouldn't last long...
I'm originally from eastern canada, and moose are one of the bigger killers on the highways, believe it or not.. A lot is what you would expect - People running into the mooses... but also, for whatever reason, sometimes they run out of the ditch, and they can go pretty quick for very brief periods of time, and they'll charge a car (from the side), and pretty much just destroy it in one go... I've seen pictures of everything from little hatchbacks to pick-ups just demolished by charging moose.. People attach "Moose whistles" to their cars, which is just a high-pitched whistle that activates as you travel a certain speed, and scares them away.. I remember when I was just little, and me and my brother and sister were in the back of the station wagon and my mom and dad were up front, and I guess a moose charged it, and my mom is yelling to my dad "A moose! A moose! Floor it!" and for a short time, he had the car at 45 or 50 mph, and the moose was keeping pace, right alongside my sister's window.. ;) Anyways.. I'm sure these 2 are pretty domesticated, but... just wanted to make sure she has a healthy respect for what they can do.. |
I agree. That's why I asked her to put her emergency contact info on the website. I don't want to be sitting there some day watching the moose and observe her getting stomped into the snow without being able to call someone to go rescue her.
I think she is pretty careful and I know she stops feeding them before breeding season starts so they aren't hanging around with all that seasonal testosterone messing with their heads. |
How do we know the moose didn't turn off the camera, post that message, and are watching Rocky and BullWinkle in the La-z-boy?:)
